How to Replace Steering Rack 92-95 Honda Civic - Power to Manual Conversion Swap

  • A complete walk through on how to remove your power steering rack & pinion and all of the associated lines and parts for your 1992-1995 Honda Civic and install a manual unit as a replacement. I used a manual rack from a 1994 Civic DX Hatchback. This hatchback is a 1995 Civic Si.
The only 2 parts you will need if buying a brand new rack and installing on your power steering equipped Civic already are the manual bracket and the spacer which holds the rubber grommet in place up against the top of the rack. The power steering rack does not have this piece.

for anyone wondering on manual handling, the dx I have now came with a manual rack. I was planning to swap to power since that's what I've always run but after 6 months I have to say aside from parking, I really enjoy the direct feeling you get from the manual rack at speed, it's very analog and predictable. I'll be staying manual!

Great video and commentary, I’ll be doing a complete front suspension rebuild on my 95 Del Sol and your videos have given great information on how to go about the job... looking forward for more of your upcoming videos.

Everyone I asked if they knew how to replace my rack or can do the job same answer all the time “the engine has to be pulled to get to the rack “ which meant $$$$ thanks a lot man I watched your video before when I was curious. I don’t know why I never watch it all !

You can also use a front sway bar bracket for a 90-93 accord as a rack mounting bracket. Happens to fit perfectly

Had a manual rack on my 93 EG dx (d13), With some honda access shocks and springs it was literally the best feeling little car ever. Real fun to drive, not heavy at all and easy to park too :)

I used energy suspension sway bar bushings for my manual rack in EK. They are slotted so they work perfect!

I have never used the manual rack bushings nor have I ever had an issue with binding using them and never had to open any bolt holes what so ever what I did do was order the energy bushing kit obviously in urithane and cut the lip off the edges and used 3m windshield adhesive and bonded the original manual rack bushing to the urithane one and squished it together and let it dry for two days (one day is sufficient ) just to be on the safe side and had no issue with alignment
