Meet the Smits! Pete and Celese, last year's Samen NZ Cow of the Year winners.
With 210 cows on a 68-hector farm based in the Kaipaki area of Waikato, Pete has been a farmer ever since he was young. With his family fully involved in the industry, diving into dairy farming seemed like a natural progression for him. Celese has quite an eye for cows too and is super keen to get involved.
Amidst their herd, one cow stands out-115, the reigning Samen NZ Cow of the Year. 115 sired ABS JOPPOLO-Pp-Et to Pete was a slow burner, “she ticks a lot of boxes, heterozygous polled, and she’s just a cow I really really enjoy working with every day”.
Celese wanted Pete to have the opportunity to showcase what he is doing on farm. She says, “he pretty humble and quiet but there is some pretty awesome genetics that we have brought in. I think people don’t showcase that enough and Pete is one of them”.
