Two things, first I still have my KK Mk1 and have no plans on getting rid of it any time soon. Second and I've said this elsewhere but, I think they kind of missed the mark on this one as the lack of Maschine support is a big deal breaker (or at least for me). I'm surprised they didn't develop a product like the Akai MPC key 61 as I think the market is going that way with a standalone keyboard and drum pad all in one unit and NI has all the instruments and drum kits etc. for something like that. Maybe the lack of support for Maschine is a sign something like that is coming?(probably not though).
I don’t think so… my guess is the amount of maschine users that also have an s series is pretty small… so they’re focusing on probably a huge percentage that don’t need Maschine… sounds strange, but this means they could go in a different direction with the maschine interface and not have to keep it consistent with their keyboards… this is just occurring to me right now!
It’s for the same reason that for three iterations of the S series keyboards, not a single one has had pads. When they’re not selling software (NI), they’re in the business of selling controllers. And they want you to buy a separate controller for Maschine. Period. I don’t think it’s much more complicated than that. I think the percentage of Maschine users who also own (or at least want) an S series is higher than Jef thinks. NI are just extremely poor at providing customers the features they want.
@@noodles4921 Huh? Have you seen the age of the Octatrack? No sign of slowing that unit down. There are many using the Maschine, anything Elektron, or the Roland Sp-404. They are everywhere out there...just go to a few shows. I often see combos of any of these three as well.

As much as I’m salivating over this new keyboard. My gut has been telling me ‘no’ from the get-go. Finding out we lost Maschine functionality just reinforced my gut feeling. I’m like you, Jeff, and waiting to see what happens next. Excellent video as always!
Question, can you navigate kontakt and battery sounds with the Maschine without using the Maschine vst or standalone software on a computer? Im trying to decide between the Mashine+ or S49 MK2. (Id rather the Maschine bcus I already have a midi controller )
Imagine an “upgrade” that “downgrades” your workflow. I just don’t comprehend the thought process. Given the enormous Maschine/KK user pool, this should have been a layup. Interesting times we live in. At least I can save some money 💰(I say that having just bought an UDO Super 6:). Great content per usual Jeff.
Appreciate you looking out for the user Jef. It feels bad that NI haven’t responded to all the update and feature requests from enthusiastic maschine users over the years and now look to be abandoning these users who have heavily invested in the ecosystem. I hope I’m wrong but they originally seemed to abandon the Maschine jam (such a good bit of kit btw). I, for one, would be sceptical about buying into any new NI products if they abandon the old Maschine mk3 and s2 keyboards - given past experience, I have little faith in NI making significant updates and supporting any new system. From a user perspective, NI should charge users for a major Maschine software update that would allow us to use all our existing hardware - the jam, mk3 and kk HW ecosystem was damn near perfect - the software needed work. Maybe they do indeed have plans but, either way, some communications would go a long way….
Definitely agree! I have a Jam but stopped using it because I didn't want a workflow that was based on something that might not be supported for much longer... Also had a Kore a hundred years ago, a device that was way ahead of its time! (and the processing abilities of computers at the time!)
The entire “have to get the new hardware to get the new software” crap is a big turn-off anyway. Give us firmware updates. If you add polyphonic aftertouch, that’s a sales argument, but don’t force me to buy it to use NKS2.
Thanks for making this video, Jef. All of this needed to be made clear for Maschine users. I hope NI can update the new Kontrol to make it usable for the Maschine crowd.
@@shadowKyraYes they did we need Maschine software upgrades/updates I love my Maschine MK3 they can just add pads and a touch screen to the new Komplete Kontrol and call that the Maschine MK4 and do the MK4+ standalone with more gigs and ram....The new Maschine MK3 should be keys and pads on the same gear!!!
Reallly happy with this review. I was thinking about getting an S49 Mk3 but heard about the poor Maschine support (I use a Mschine+). Yesterday I saw a new S88 Mk2 on sale for the same price as the S49 Mk3 - I ordered the S88 Mk2. This video has just confirmed I made the right decision for my setup! Thanks Jef!
I don't have a Maschine hardware unit but I really like using my MK2 with the Maschine software, I can do so much without leaving the keyboard. Wouldn't want to lose this
The Kontrol MK3 almost inspired me to make an MK2 comparison video…and I’m not a content creator 😂. Thanks for doing this Jef! You saved me a lot of time and broke it down clearly and concisely.
thank you so much for this video!! super helpful. i can’t believe they would just drop all the maschine functionality in the mk3! feels like a move backwards
'All people wanted was a KK keyboard with pads'? I for one did NOT want pads on my keyboard controller. I have Maschine. What I WOULD have loved is for NI to add the capability they added... but NOT take away the Maschine-integration capabilities. Even if it raised the price of the keyboard by a bit. It really makes me wonder what was going through their minds when they made this 'compromise' decision.
So loosing those pattern, scene, etc... buttons, ok I can live with that. I preferred using Maschine for that anyway. Not even including basic transport controls for their own "DAW" is a very weird turn of events. I hope they add at least some basic Maschine functions in future updates. Still happy with the S49 MK2. I am going to wait a while and see what happens because I was kind of planning on getting a 61 keys keyboard.
No cue why a company would do this when Maschine is their own software. If it was a third-party's software then sure, I can understand why you wouldn't get all the functionality from the keyboard's controls.
Great video Jef! Would love to see an extended video of you showing some more of your Maschine workflow from the Mk2…. I learnt a lot just now from your quick zoom through in the back half of this vid! 👍
As a song writer & arranger find it hard to believe ni just abandons it’s daw - I’ve written so much material using Maschine 2 - I’m seriously thinking of just going with hardware keyboards (Yamaha/korg etc…) from now on if they can’t integrate their own daw with their future keyboards
I just can't understand how they have removed so many things (even buttons, which won't be able to replace with new firmware!) from the new keyboards. I have a S61 Mk2 and a Maschine Mk3 and won't rush to replace my controller, for sure!
Thanks for sharing this info! In any case, having the S MK II, I really don't see the need to "upgrade" to the MK III, as it doesn't bring anything new to the table, except for a shiny new big screen and metallic encoders.
Well needed Jef. The promo gave me Maschine Studio Kontrol vibes, but when seen it was "just" a MK3 KK. First thought was this may not do same as Maschine and KK SW together. This KK MK3 is "flagship" like Maschine MK3. I can wait for the M series to improve LOL. Thanks for the content.
Thanks for the breakdown. I've got a Maschine Jam, Studio and KK S49. Perfect little ecosystem. It'll be interesting to see where they're going with this. It's hard to believe that they haven't got a roadmap hidden somewhere.
I too have a Jam & an S88 mk2. I recently had a studio as well & didn’t see I needed to swap out for an mk3. I love my eco system as well. This is the 1st time I’ve invested in a 5 year plus product, but felt it was extra right that I partnered my S88 with its rightful mk3 cousin. The new KK mk3’s look good, but already the lack of maschine functionality makes it an instant dud for me. Obviously I don’t know where NI is headed, but I feel super comfortable with the all round integration.
I think there must be a new Maschine on the way, and this is really a similar tactic to the withdrawal of support for the kk mk1. They've made a judgement call that, from their point of view, the fallout from dropping these things is the lesser of two evils, compared to the limitation that keeping them would put on sales of the new devices.
I just got my new NI s49 keyboard mk3, I love it . I also have the maschine mk3 , but I just use the maschine software to make drum patterns and transfer them to my daw to further develop my song because I really don’t like using the maschine software for writing musical melodies , I use cubase because it takes my ideas to a different level with all of the tools that it has. I really think the maschine software is very limited and that is the reason I got away from using it. My opinion.
thanks Jef i'm a maschine user and was planning on upgrading my mk 1 to a mk3 looking online there are some great deals on the mk2 saved me about £400 cheers
Thx for your clarification. Guess I will stay on my Maschine+, MK2, Yamaha MX offline setup. The integration and power of a second HW Synth in the Maschine+ setup and being able to play my Yamaha MX via the Maschine Mixer integrated MK2 is awesome. Hopefully, NI does not abandon the approach and offers more integration of their HW and SW. In the end the new MK3 really has a lot of potential. Let's see whether NI will spend enough time and resources for further improvements (unlike the Maschine+).
They havent invested in the Maschine SW for a few years now. I think they are abandoning it. The removal of the Maschine buttons on the Mk3 keyboards is a clear giveaway of that decision. I am moving my work to Ableton. Such a shame. Good technology being destroyed by a lack of vision and understanding of user needs.
The maschine software is too popular for them to just abandon it. And they keep dishing out new expansions for it. My guess....or hope, is that NI would upgrade maschine software into a full-blown stand-alone daw that can still function as a plugin in your preferred daw.
You really think they won’t sell expansions up to the last second and then cancel their support for it? Look what they did with iMaschine. Yeah different animal completely but same idea. I can’t trust them anymore.
Doing near the opposit, @@hvhvgitaar - setting up maschine so im ready for it not to be updated for a decade if it goes that way. If an MPC3000 is still good, so is maschine.
I own the S-series 61-key MK1 which for some inexplicable reason, Native Instruments just decided to not support anymore. The keyboard line that was made specifically for the Komplete Kontrol Software, is phased out. There's literally no good reason to do this other than to try and get you to buy another 800+ dollar controller. I had to uninstall the 3.2 version and install the 2.9.6 version in order to continue using my keyboard controller. Arturia would never do this. I purchased their Pigment software version 3. They gave me versions 4 and 5 (the latest) for free as an upgrade. Same thing with their microfreak. Just giving away riches....that's called good customer service. Take notes
@@jefgibbons Not being polite. Not going over the top about it either. It's not that serious, but I'm also a NewYorker. Rude is our way. I'm reformed, but I'm still a work in progress. Thanks for the advice brother
Thanks for making this video and for exposing what looks like a strategic mistake by NI. I was holding off getting a keyboard because I had a feeling the Mk2s were getting an upgrade . This move by NI has convinced me that they are going to abandon the Maschine platform. So I am now moving all my work to Ableton and have just bought an Arturia Keylab essential.
I hope this means there is another Machine coming out. I understand that sometimes to move ahead you have to make a break in the line. I love my machine studio and will keep my work flow for now. I see an unbelievable amount of returns even with yours and a lot of other videos out there.
Great video. Sometimes an upgrade is not always the best option. I will stick with my mk3 s61 and jam. Those units for me. People are buying these models without researching. A new shiny toy let's get it. We saw the same thing with the mk3+.
I am a maschine user and have desperately wanted a s61 mk2. With the mk3 not working with maschine, I can probably now afford the mk2. Lol. Cuz I am definitely not getting an mk3
It’s huge!!! It’s a great feature too… choose a sound on the maschine, then play it up and down the keyboard on the kkmk 2, or hit the key mode and play the individual sounds.
Wow! I wish I would’ve known all of this before taking the plunge and buying the new mark three machine and the mark three kontrol …. I thought I was doing something wrong and couldn’t get the two to communicate in the machine software. It literally does not make any sense. Why one of their controller keyboards not at least do some basic rudimentary control functions without having to go through a basic midi map like this is a third-party keyboard. Native instruments are crooks. This information should’ve been way more transparent and now I can’t return any of this. The whole purpose of going this route was to have an ecosystem that can communicate to each other. Literally furious at this and it’s purely misleading. This information his not obvious on their website and coming from older kontrol and maschine I would never have thought this was even a possibility.
I will stick with my MK2 for now. Instead of adding extra faders, they are removing buttons and functionality. I cannot comprehend this. I hope there is a good reason for this change, which will be revealed soon.
When i saw this, i went and bought a mark 2 for 399 at the guitar center. I dont really understand its like they went backwards for minor upgrades. They could have went to next level, based on the company's update history i dont see any surprise secret hidden jewels down the line.
Bold and honest! I think NI wants us to buy a new Kontrol S keyboard AND a Maschine 😢 What if Maschine support never comes to the Kontrol S? It possible, maybe even likely.
I firmly believe that the lack of Maschine support on the new KKK mk3 was done on purpose. Wait for Maschine Mk4 and we'll have the answer. Don't forget that the potential of this new controller is not yet fully known and that many new features are still to come. It would be a huge mistake on the part of Native Instruments if the integration with Maschine were simply left to one side. Wait and see. Thanks Jef for your vids. Greatly appreciated. Cheers.
I suppose they have some strategy in mind that isn’t so obvious, but I very much prefer to use a keyboard over a pad controller and the integration with Maschine is pretty useful. I mostly use Maschine as a scratch pad since I feel Logic is a much more ‘logical’ (lol) platform - being able to record instruments for example is a pretty basic function of a DAW but is a chore with Maschine, but sometimes you get into a flow and Maschine + keyboard is nice.
Question, can you navigate kontakt and battery sounds with the Maschine without using the Maschine vst or standalone software on a computer? Im trying to decide between the Mashine+ or S49 MK2. (Id rather the Maschine bcus I already have a midi controller )
As mentioned on NI website: "Does Kontrol S-Series MK3 Integrate with Maschine? Kontrol S MK3 can be used with Maschine as a regular MIDI controller. This means that while you can play your plug-in synthesizers and instruments with your Kontrol S MK3 in Maschine via MIDI and use MIDI CC, there is no advanced integration such as transport control, scene change, etc. at this time. We are investigating opportunities to extend this over time as we evaluate overall improvements to the product experience that benefit the majority of customers" I won't buy Kontrol S-Series MK3 until advanced integration such as transport control, scene change, etc. of Maschine has been added. Thanks for highlighting this in your video Jef!
So let me understand something. I have the A49 mk2, and want to move up. I had the S49 mk2, but gave it up because I couldn't read the screen very well; I'm almost blind. I also gave up the Maschine mk3 because of really had to work at using the screen; poor eyesight again. I really liked the Maschine software though. Are you.saying that with the S49 mk3, I won't have access to Maschine software? Now that would be a drag. I understand the mk3 screen has better resolution than the mk2. Is that right? If I have to, I'll think about the mk2, and just work it out sight wise. As Sanjay C. pointed out in a past video, I don't really need the Maschine hardware to use the software.
+1 everything you said, but also don’t forget to add no drum pads, no faders, no stand alone mode (for extra cost), no midi 2.0, and so much wasted space
Thanks Jeff; always enjoy your videos, specially the ones related to the NI Expansions & Play Series. I precipitated and bought the S61 MK3 a couple of weeks ago when I saw that it arrived to my nearby store, to realize hours later that there is ZERO integration with Maschine?!. Now, instead of enjoying this fantastic piece of hardware, I parked it aside and left it off all the time and continued using the KK A29, as it works better with my relatively new Maschine MK3. I tried to send it back to the store, but the store do not accept returns of opened and tried items. What a disappointment! I think this is a Komplete nonsense, as if I brought an Apple watch and figured that it works somewhat with Samsung and Huawei, but not the iPhone :-) I will most likely switch next year to AKAI MPC ecosystem if NI doesn't sort this out soon ...
Hi Jef. Thanks for the heads up. Well it is 4 months passed. Has anything changed or still you think Mk2 is a better purchase. I just have an opportunity to get a used KK S61 mk2 for 1/2 price. I also like to buy a midi controller that works well with different DAW and different synth parameters (ease and efficiency of navigating, assigning variables to rotaries, and basically a good companion for real time performance experience and not having forte in those areas just for Kontakt). I was originally thinking of Nektar T6 but that 1/2 price KK S61 mk2 is also very tempting. What would you do? DAW wise I am using Pro Tools, Cubase, and hoping to get to Bitwig ... or Ableton Live perhaps.
Great question! Been using the MK3 a lot the last few weeks, and I'm getting used to the keybed... I still think I liked the MK2 keys better, but it really is just about what you get used to! The main things I still love are the browser and previews, as well as the lights to show keyswitches etc. You get all of that with the MK2. I am seeing more and more instruments getting the tab for folders of parameters and that's really nice, but it still feels like it's got a long ways to go. My only concern would be the future-proofing of the MK2, I think you still have a good few years with it, but we'll see how long they support it for! For the record, I do think the MK3 will be fantastic once they really get edit tabs and screen optimization down!
I believe they went this route because they're gonna release a MK Studio with the same functionality with Maschine as the MK2 and all the updates of the MK3 plus 16 Pads. Remember Maschine Studio never got a refresh, a MK Studio would be a perfect replacement for it. All i can do is hope 😂.
Thank you very much you made my day just was going to buy the MK3 but now No , they did like this so they sell more Maschine but honestly you don’t buy equipment by force & here they want to force us to buy the Maschine so then I congratulate them I will never buy Macschine & also will not upgrade The Komplete Kontrol Mk2 then ho is the looser now Native Instruments I am very happy that they hungry to sell , well done for them
Me thinks there is a Maschine update coming and someone’s product roadmap didn’t quite go according to plan. 😄 My only question is whether that update will be HW, SW, or both.
I feel NI with Machine and M+ is like that partner that fell out of love and doesn't want to tell you and behaves passively aggressively...NI, just admit that you screw up with the M+ and you want a divorce. Don't leave us hanging like that..
Luckily I have the S61 MK2 and Maschine 3 and have been eyeing out the S88 MK3 - original decision was to sell the S61 MK2 and replace - but I think I'll hang onto it and buy the S88 MK3 and use both - S61 for Maschine - S88 MK3 for new features
Jef - at 6:23, you mention 'see, I'm not even using Maschine at all'. Do you think this was NI's point? To 'encourage' (force) us back to the Maschine HW for playing sounds, tweaking sounds, mixing, etc..? Did anybody at NI give you any WHYs to this change on the Mk3? Thanks for the video. I also have an Mk2, and am happy to keep using it for now. Maybe I'll look toward the Mk4! Heck, I used my Yamaha KX88 for 15+ years! 🙂
Wow I had a kx88, bought one after seeing Russell Ferrante from Yellowjackets put it to work. I used it with roland mks-20 and a couple other rack synths, loved the aftertouch. 🎹♥️
I remember the whole reason I bought the MK2 board was to use with Maschine because I wanted to use a keyboard and didn’t want to use two controllers. So sad they nuked the functionality. I think it has to be said as well that NI has a software identity crisis. Which is it NI? Kontakt, Komplete Kontrol, or Maschine. We only need one piece of software that does everything and uses one controller. Figure it out. Maschine is a better for me personally because it does all the Kontakt sampling stuff but also lets me bounce from PC to Mac without worrying about file type. It runs Kontakt for God’s sake, so just put everything in Maschine and be done with it. The silver lining is the MK2 boards have lost nearly half their value and still probably have enough of a life left that they are a good purchase. I am just really struggling to see what people find great about the new board. Seems like an obvious shrinkflation to me. Less of everything for more money. I really hope that they drop something like the MPC Key 61 for Maschine users, but I feel it’s in vain.
As owner of a Mk 2 88, I haze ZERO understanding or use for their new Mark 3 concept. Like Korg's Nautilus compared to Kronos, the Mk3s are a poor man's controller keyboards, not giving keyboard players remotely enough freedom to get assignable hands on usability. - not even talking of Maschine users. And they haven't even provided touchscreen functionality to make up for missing controllers. They obviously went for easy accessability of few NI core functions on a few knobs and buttons, massively cutting their costs while still overpricing the new devices - which is NOT what all keyboarders I know and talked to really want. NI will learn their lesson, I guess...
Hi, mr. Jef! Greetings from Ukraine! I'm a Maschine and Cubase user, I have mk3 Maschine and mk1 kk. I was planning to upgrate kk mk1 to mk2, but after termination of servise mk1 I'm not shure which model I need to upgrade to... Mk2 currently looks better, but, in your opinion, will NI support mk2 long enough? Thank you! Your work and advice are very important and helpfull !
Jerry Jef, thanks. Wow, just before I was reading all the complaints about them dropping support for the KK sw, no tag editing etc. But they have promised at the NI forum to bring it back to KK 3 (3.1?). Do NOT upgrade the KK sw Jef, stay at 2.9. By the way the Machine control from MkII you showed was great, have you done a full video of it? I learned new stuff 😂😮❤
MK2 Are wayyy better if you are a maschine user. they are keyboard maschine controllers literally. To me, it is wayy more functional for me than the mk3 with all its features. Logic users are better off with this keyboard. Anyway im glad MK2 is compatible, it makes my maschine experience amazing
I think at this point they need to rename it to the ALMOST Komplete Kontrol. I won't be upgrading myself I'll stick with using the Nektar Aura with Maschine on the KK2.
I posted over at NI's video how it was a strange choice to remove Maschine support on their S MK3 for their stated reason of not many people using it like that, but at the same time knowing they will release Maschine 3.0 sometime in end of 2024 where the update might actually increase users pairing their SMKII with Maschine. If anything why would they not wait until Maschine 3.0 to see if there is an uptick in people using the Maschine stuff and then remove it for S MKIV. Wad such a premature decision. I also mentioned to them maybe they should create Komplete DAW as a bridge for Maschine and Komplete Kontrol.
Its clear. Its money.. They want you to buy both. A lot of NI users are keyboard players, as their main instrument. Why would they buy Maschine if the keys can pretty much do it all? A lot probably dont. They want to sell you both as a pair. Its about money. But for now. MK2 with Maschine MK3 is perfect for me and the wife. If they discontinue it. I will just keep trucking with what I have until its all worked out. Thank you for your help!
The good thing about all this is that we now have Midi 2.0 coming. This means, we don't need Native Instruments Midi controllers and NKS anymore. All those features like auto mapping the parameters of a synth to the knobs on the keyboard are working out of the box with Midi 2.0. So if they are removing Maschine support from MK3, we don't need to buy it at all. We can buy something like the Korg KeyStage, which is a great polyphonic aftertouch Midi 2.0 controller and it maps the values of ANY midi 2.0 ready plugin to it's knobs, not just the NKS ones. So for me it's goodbye to Native Instruments. They are a very customer unfriendly company.
Midi 2.0 looks great, as does the Korg, but there’s nothing like the screen to make access instantly viewable and accessible… saying that we still need them to map all of their instruments to the new system!
I’d also like to know! What’s the situation like now? I just purchased a Maschine MK3 and I’m loving it. I just got how fantastic the whole NKS system is (with non-NI plugins too). As a pianist, I need the ”best” 88-key controller with aftertouch, so I almost pulled the trigger on an S88 MK3. I guess MKII is an option, but that widescreen display is just too cool 😅
They had no reason to eliminate the Maschine functionality in the S series keyboards except to sell more of their hardware to their most loyal customers. Their loyal fanbase… of whom I think NI is becoming less and less deserving.
I'll stick with my MK2 and save money🤣Surly Native instruments knew it was going to lose a lot of potential sales by not including Maschine functionality, or is this a sign of things to come, i.e. phasing out Maschine 😮, I hope that is not the case.😎😎
I'm still torn between two lovers. I have the KK S61mk2 and I'm only a year in and dig it a lot. I'd like to add one more MIDI keyboard, and I like the Arturia Keylab mk2 or the NI KK S49 mk3. I current have Arturia's Sound Explorers Collection Belledonne and it is way to much tool for this ole fool.
As a Maschine+ user, I will for sure NOT be buying this. What a waste of potential. Hopefully NI will update this in the future to better suit Maschine users.
I own a white machine studio. (Jealous of your white mk3! Sell it to me! Hehe) Never loved machine but was pretty handy once I used it as a plugin in studio one. Owning Konsol 3 would not interfere this, right? It simply connect to kontakt but inside studio one as I see it. Did I miss anything?

Yesterday I saw a new S88 Mk2 on sale for the same price as the S49 Mk3 - I ordered the S88 Mk2. This video has just confirmed I made the right decision for my setup! Thanks Jef!
I don't have a Maschine hardware unit but I really like using my MK2 with the Maschine software, I can do so much without leaving the keyboard. Wouldn't want to lose this
Bro just get an used Mikro, you already have the knobs and the display.
@@eaman11Good idea Looking into it, cheers
The Kontrol MK3 almost inspired me to make an MK2 comparison video…and I’m not a content creator 😂. Thanks for doing this Jef! You saved me a lot of time and broke it down clearly and concisely.
Thanks Mike, and thanks for the tip!
thank you so much for this video!! super helpful. i can’t believe they would just drop all the maschine functionality in the mk3! feels like a move backwards
It was because of my MK2 keyboard that I discovered Maschine and started buying expansions.
Thanks for being so honest about all this.
Hey thanks for making this video Sweet Water or American Music Supply did not have the answer to this question when i called and asked. YOU THE MAN👊🏾
I just bought the KK mk3, connected it up, switched on Maschine... DAMN. I'm taking it back to the store Monday....
I just brought a Series MK2, upgrade from A49 Series I am an Maschine "Studio". Brave but I am happy with my decision. Thank you Jef
All people wanted was a KK keyboard with pads and they went the complete opposite direction 😂
I would have liked some touch strips like the maschine jam!
Are knob faders something new DANG!!!!
Yuuup. Hardcore fail. 😂
Ikr
So loosing those pattern, scene, etc... buttons, ok I can live with that. I preferred using Maschine for that anyway. Not even including basic transport controls for their own "DAW" is a very weird turn of events. I hope they add at least some basic Maschine functions in future updates. Still happy with the S49 MK2. I am going to wait a while and see what happens because I was kind of planning on getting a 61 keys keyboard.
Thanks Jeff! Been happy with my MK2 S61 for years.
Thanks for this review Jef!
& thanks so much Jeff for putting out this much needed article
Thanks for sharing this info!
In any case, having the S MK II, I really don't see the need to "upgrade" to the MK III, as it doesn't bring anything new to the table, except for a shiny new big screen and metallic encoders.
Well needed Jef. The promo gave me Maschine Studio Kontrol vibes, but when seen it was "just" a MK3 KK. First thought was this may not do same as Maschine and KK SW together. This KK MK3 is "flagship" like Maschine MK3. I can wait for the M series to improve LOL. Thanks for the content.
Bought mine yesterday. I wish I had seen this video first. Time to make a return. Thanks for the info! Suscribed
Thanks for the breakdown. I've got a Maschine Jam, Studio and KK S49. Perfect little ecosystem. It'll be interesting to see where they're going with this. It's hard to believe that they haven't got a roadmap hidden somewhere.
I will definitely recommend a roadmap post on the blog… we need some insight into their direction.
🤦 Why on earth would NI do this? I firmly believe the suites need to sit the f down.
@@andrewventhamGood viewpoint. 🎹♥️
My opinion.
I MAYBE could have looked past removing some buttons. MAYBE. But to remove ALL functionality with maschine is mind boggling.
I agree... 💔
thanks Jef i'm a maschine user and was planning on upgrading my mk 1 to a mk3 looking online there are some great deals on the mk2 saved me about £400 cheers
It’s clear they’ve either decided to abandon maschine or they’re going to release some new maschine. The software needs some upgrades.
I really hope it’s the latter… we need to be vocal in our support for Maschine!
Great review. Was interested in S61 mk3 but may now go to the mk2 since it integrates so well with Maschine mk3 (which I love).
Take notes
I hear you John! Customer service is king… make sure you’re voicing your frustration on their forums. Politely…
I will continue to use my Maschine Studio and my new Studiologic SL88Studio combination
I am a maschine user and have desperately wanted a s61 mk2. With the mk3 not working with maschine, I can probably now afford the mk2. Lol. Cuz I am definitely not getting an mk3
Thx Jeff! Definitly goin to wait after watching this..i almost bought the 49 but didnt see ni post nothing about maschine integration.
I'd love to see something official, just to make Maschine users aware and to let us know that it's coming...
Isn’t it crazy how new seems to be less than previous nowadays? Perfect example as to why new doesn’t mean better.
Mk2 owner here - I wondered what key mode did 😂 cheers!
Thank you for a realistic review. I hope this is temp? Get it together NI
When i saw this, i went and bought a mark 2 for 399 at the guitar center. I dont really understand its like they went backwards for minor upgrades. They could have went to next level, based on the company's update history i dont see any surprise secret hidden jewels down the line.
Hi Jef, is there another midi controler that have the same keyboard ( real piano felling ) as the s88 mk2, can be less than 88. Thank you
Bold and honest!
Exactly 💯
Question, can you navigate kontakt and battery sounds with the Maschine without using the Maschine vst or standalone software on a computer? Im trying to decide between the Mashine+ or S49 MK2. (Id rather the Maschine bcus I already have a midi controller )
As mentioned on NI website:
"Does Kontrol S-Series MK3 Integrate with Maschine?
Kontrol S MK3 can be used with Maschine as a regular MIDI controller. This means that while you can play your plug-in synthesizers and instruments with your Kontrol S MK3 in Maschine via MIDI and use MIDI CC, there is no advanced integration such as transport control, scene change, etc. at this time.
We are investigating opportunities to extend this over time as we evaluate overall improvements to the product experience that benefit the majority of customers"
I won't buy Kontrol S-Series MK3 until advanced integration such as transport control, scene change, etc. of Maschine has been added.
Thanks for highlighting this in your video Jef!
You bet, we need at least the basics with Maschine!!
Got S88 mk2 for $386 from NI on reverb 😊and it supports Maschine! Don’t sleep on it
So let me understand something.
Again a great valuable review. tnx !
They should give both the mk2 and mk3 a nice software update ❤
if they will not make to work it together how it was, my current NI hardware is a last one.
NI decisions sometimes are "weird", but let's hope all the Maschine environment keeps evolving for better :), thanks for the video
I think this is a Komplete nonsense, as if I brought an Apple watch and figured that it works somewhat with Samsung and Huawei, but not the iPhone :-)
I will most likely switch next year to AKAI MPC ecosystem if NI doesn't sort this out soon ...
Does a MKII keyboard do everything that a MKIII does in terms of interfacing and controlling Kontakt?
My opinion: it’s addressed in the next update to Maschine.
Hello. Does the keyboard backlight turn off? What are its operating modes? MK3
Hi, mr.
Honestly their a lot of things that maschine could do better especially when it comes to working seamlessly across all daws
Been on maschine since mk1 came out and use the KK MK1 with it . Also preordered the mk3 88key and am a little worried about this change
I also mentioned to them maybe they should create Komplete DAW as a bridge for Maschine and Komplete Kontrol.
good heads up bruv!!!!!
Its clear.
It would be good if you could get an interview with someone at NI and find out what they are thinking.
I hope they do the vapour grey versions again
In theory can't we open komplete kontrol as plugin in Maschine and use it that way?
Are the new keyboards working well with Maschine yet? I need to buy a new keyboard at the moment. :/
How stupid could NI not to bring that i to their new keyboards. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t use both.
They had no reason to eliminate the Maschine functionality in the S series keyboards except to sell more of their hardware to their most loyal customers. Their loyal fanbase… of whom I think NI is becoming less and less deserving.
I'll stick with my MK2 and save money🤣Surly Native instruments knew it was going to lose a lot of potential sales by not including Maschine functionality, or is this a sign of things to come, i.e. phasing out Maschine 😮, I hope that is not the case.😎😎
can i use external Synthesizer with it and how good is the Mapping to the Synthesizer?
I'm still torn between two lovers.
I have the KK S61mk2 and I'm only a year in and dig it a lot. I'd like to add one more MIDI keyboard, and I like the Arturia Keylab mk2 or the NI KK S49 mk3. I current have Arturia's Sound Explorers Collection
Belledonne and it is way to much tool for this ole fool.
As a Maschine+ user, I will for sure NOT be buying this. What a waste of potential. Hopefully NI will update this in the future to better suit Maschine users.
The KK MK2 with M+ is beautiful... I haven't even tried the KK3 with the M+ but I don't think it would be pretty... yet!
Would you go with an mk2 or a hydrasynth explorer?
@@zmmmzmmmz I have a hydrasysnth explorer and it is awesome.
Do the keybeds feel the same or has it been improved? Quieter as far as dampening or still clunky?
I never found the old one clunky, so I can’t help you there! Key bed feels fine… but it ain’t weighted!
Sub Bank has not been implemented yet. Browsing in kkmk2 more intuitive. NI. Please fix this bug.
Is that so? 🎹♥️
Have NI said they are working on an update to the software to control Machine?
I own a white machine studio. (Jealous of your white mk3! Sell it to me! Hehe) Never loved machine but was pretty handy once I used it as a plugin in studio one.
Owning Konsol 3 would not interfere this, right? It simply connect to kontakt but inside studio one as I see it. Did I miss anything?
