  • We took a quick trip to beautiful Paris, France to meet our son Devan who is traveling throughout Europe (Portugal, Italy and France) and we also got to celebrate his birthday!
We didn't get to visit many of the touristy landmarks because we only had 3 days, but we did get to enjoy a Banksy exhibit, the Moulin Rouge cabaret, we ate at couple of Michelin star restaurants and mainly spent quality time with our son.
It is so inexpensive to travel within Europe, we will be visiting this romantic city more often.
Next short video will be a road trip to Sagres in the Algarve. Stay tuned.

Hi. I'm very glad you got to connect with your son.
And thank you for your helpful videos prior to this. I'm about to start the PT process, and I thought you guys would be "locked" in place for 183--is there any place that explains how much time you can move around within Schengen during that 183? Or maybe you guys took this trip prior to the SEF visit? Thank you.

Thank you! I believe you are referencing 183 days to be a tax resident, which is what we are doing. Prior to having a visa, you can only stay in the Schengen area as a visitor for 90 days. Upon entering with a residency visa, you are allowed to exit and re-enter one time before receiving your residency permit from SEF. You need to be in Portugal for 16 or 18 months out of 24 months of your temporary residency to qualify for a renewal. It's 16 months if you stay away for 8 months if unsequential. It's 18 months if you stay away for 6 months consecutively. You can qualify for an exception but you have a duty to communicate with SEF. Thanks for watching, let us know if you have other questions and good luck with your move!!

@@SeekingParadiseBugs Thank you for the response and taking the time for the details. But this is literally that's the toughest for me to understand. And I didn't wan to really have to sell my house to buy a golden visa when it probably isn't necessary. But most of the stuff I've read about the D7 says one has to maintain residence for 183, and my understanding is that that's if you want to maintain your resident status (with the focus not the tax part, although that seems to be the case also). So that when you go for your 2 year renewal you need those “6 consecutive months.” But I've also read the numbers you gave 16 and 18 in 24. Which comes out to 8 and 9 months a year right? So that seems not to match the 6 months.
My main thing was I wanted to be able to visit other Schengen countries. So I assumed (for ex.) Jan to June, have to stay in PT and THEN I could leave and go see Europe the rest of the year (both Schengen and non, like UK). That's why when I saw you in France I was like-oh you can travel within those 183 PT days? So if you could help me gain some clarity I'd be thankful. I'm sure it's crystal clear and obvious I'm just not seeing it :(

It's our understanding that for the first 2 year period you need to be in the country a total of 16 months and no absence can exceed 6 months. For your subsequent 3 year period, you must be in the country 28 months and no absence can exceed 6 months. imigrante.sef.pt/en/direitos-deveres/
