Probably it's because Rome's civilization was a foundation for modern Western culture, so it doesn't seem quite as incongruous. Gotta admit, for all the buzz behind the Japanese cartoons, their movie sets have always been astounding, taking from great examples of the vanguards of cinema, and expounding on them. Over time, it's readily apparent that Japanese filmmakers have definitely perfected their own version of the art of epic sets for movies.
At 0:07, I think that's a set from Cinecittà studios (Rome, Italy), used for the production of other Roman-themed shows (e.g. HBO's Rome). Not sure about the other Roman-themed sets.
I was surprised how much I liked the anime. At first Iwas curious, but it was sitting in my favorites list for awhile on Netflix. The Cherry on the top was Ms. Yamazaki visiting the real therms in Japan at the and of every episode. Hope we will see more of hers work soon. Wish you all the best 💗
Wtf are you even talking about? A white man playing the role of a spanish gladiator is not the same as a japanese man playing the role of a roman citizen. You make zero sense
This is a comedy of comparative culture between ancient Rome and modern Japan through the medium of the "bath". It is also calculated to be funny, with the ancient Romans being played by Japanese people with relatively Western features. If the main role had been played by a Western actor, it would not have been very interesting, as that is the norm in this setting.
I just happened upon the anime version (Thermae Romae Nova) on Netflix yesterday; I've been trying to find this movie online, but so far I've only found the DVDs/Blu-Rays on Amazon.
I loved this movie. It was a sweet relaxed movie that I'd discovered on youtube. It's a really original story, something different. I just discovered there is a part II, so I'm gonna watch it asap.
There is an added story, but the new series of Netflix animation is more faithful to the original Manga by Mari YAMAZAKI. However, I think this film is also very good and enjoyable. from flat face people(^_^)

Well, She might come from a greek line but we don't really know about her mother's lineage. That's why her ethnicity is still subject for debate. And what about that recent movie: "The Great Gatsby"? They picked Bolywood star Amitabh Bachchan to play the gangster Meyer Wolfsheim who is jewish. But Bachchan isn't jewish nor doesn't look like one. And nobody said anything (except maybe some Indians).
Keneda, yes it's annoying anytime they put a white actor or actress when the character isn't white (or that white). It can also be annoying simply when they keep representing characters whith actor or actress that are so different like very tall and thin actress for a short and chubby character, etc. A part from the white-washing thing, sometimes they just have prejudice or bias like "oh, this character is the queen of Spain so she must have dark hair" "he's the king of Danemark therefore he must look like a viking" completely ignoring marriages or conquests that put people from a totally different countries or ethnicity at the head of a kingdom they are not coming from ! At one time, Napoleon's sisters and generals were all king and queens of many european countries... That being said, it's unfortunately also the case for Cleopatra Κλεοπάτρα who was the queen of Egypt but has a greek name because she's descending from the Λαγίδαι greek dynasty, which came after the persian dynasty (defeated by "Alexander the great") and ruled the country. The first king then pharaoh had different wives, some greek, some persian etc. so it's very possible Cleopatra hsd other origins than just greek but the Ptolemean had a tendandy to incest and if you look at her family tree, you'll see it doesn't make us dream :/

The fact that the Romans are all played by Japanese actors seems like well justified retaliation for Tom Cruise taking part in the Satsuma Rebellion and Keanu Reeves playing one of the 47 Ronin.
Can't speak about Keanu Reeves 47 Ronin, but actually in the Last Samurai Tom Cruise was an American stealing the part of Frenchmen named Jules Brunet.
