The circular plate on the floor is to provide access to the winding drum for the car emergency brake -known as the "safety"- which clamps to the rails. There is a bevel gear on the drum for a "T" wrench which also has a bevel pinion that allows the safety to be manually released.
This is a really cool building. Otis touch sensitive buttons remind me of the elevators at the Empress Hotel in Victoria. Every once in a while if I happen to be in an older hotel, I'll find an unlocked machine room certainly worth checking out. The easiest to way to get there is to take the fire escape stairs which will be have to be closest to the elevator bank. They will most likely give you access to the machine room..
Cool... cool... COOL!! If we ever get you up here to Duluth, MN, I'll personally tour you around to the vintage 50's Westy's @ Wells Fargo, touch-sensitive Otis @ Board of Trade & lots more. I need to go see these!! Happy Thanksgiving!!
Just amazing! The UK has some terrible generic elevators/lifts replacing our nice old ones. We should take a leaf out of the USA's book! If they want to make them better they should just refurbish not modernize or replace.
Those elevators remind me a little of the CityCenter at 735 building in Milwaukee which have 8 elevators like these from 1912. This building looks nicer though than that place. Same amount of floors and everything, but the elevators look a little bit more modern than these, but it's got the original controllers and fixtures
Okay, looking back on this video, I'm hands down still sad to see these nostalgic and amazing elevators go away. In all seriousness, I wish it didn't have to go, but I'm sure whoever called the renovation on this building had their reasons. That right there, gives me a whole new meaning of how all good things must come to an end one of these days.
Just was in Louisville on 6/6/19. Currently the Starks Building is closed to the public with a sign on the front door reading "closed for renovations." 🙁
Now, you can still access the building via the back door of the building which is still open for construction workers and deliveries, however, all but one passenger and the freight elevator were out of service, and I wasn't able to go up either of the two working elevators as they're being used for construction and they are doing lots of internal demolition on the upper floors. :(
@@FloridianElevators There was another office building near by with round touch buttons in some of the hallway call stations. Can't remember the name of the building, but it was close by and about 30 stories. Aside from the interior buttons being replaced it's all original 70's Otis and those elevators were rocket fast!
I was just in Louisville a couple weeks ago. The building is all boarded up and is shut down entirely. The status of how these elevators is currently unknown however it is confirmed that these were indeed modernized.
Where did you find out these were modernized? They were still original in 2019 but most of them were out of service due to the building being renovated.(Which was never completed)
The escalators were probably installed by Dover. They installed Hitachi escalators in the U.S. But it's weird how they have the Hitachi name, normally they have the Dover name.
Well it looks like the City Center at 735 with their historic Otis elevators just like these are getting modded with Schindler Port. I'm probably gonna ask for some parts.
***** From what Andrew told me, these elevators are in no danger of getting modded since the Starks Building is placed on the National Register of Historic Buildings, and the elevators don't need to be upgraded any further.

It is considered unlucky to some superstitious people, so in some tall buildings, there isn't a 13th floor as those people would be uncomfortable staying/working there.
I'm pretty positive according to recent photos online and on Instagram, but people have gone around saying these are modded. Can't confirm exactly, but probably original
I was just here today, and I have some very bad news. The building is now vacant and closed, and is being totally gutted and turned into a hotel and apartments. All but ONE of the passengers are now out of service, and the freighter was working, but I couldn't ride it. I got to look inside the place and in the elevators, but couldn't ride due to asbestos. I was told 2 of the Autotronics will be ripped out and the rest will be modernized or replaced. The freighter may or may not be replaced, but that is Unknown. So yeah, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, But RIP Otis Autotronics 1954-2019.
It's so sad people diss these old office buildings like this one without acknowledging how much history there is and how lucky they are to work in a place like this....and then as a result, places like this get ruined on the inside and turned into apartments or hotels...
@@EWPA14 I'm gonna be in Louisville next month, I will find out their current state then and if they're still original, which from the looks of it they are, I'm gonna see if I can ask security or someone what the plan is regarding these elevators' future...

Beautiful building and elevators. That's the first time I've seen Hitachi escalators too.
Best thing I've seen all day.
I visited this place and it is awesome
Are these still original?
These elevators are awesome and the building is beautiful!
Dieselducy, this is probably my favourite elevator video ever. Thanks!!

1:24 10:25 It seems like the floor rails in the selector are directly next to each other with no spacing as the bulbs don't turn off in between
I noticed that too. Good possibility

I saw a video on another channel and it was a par old elevator but it sounded super creepy.
The Starks Building was RENOVATED in 2018.

I think [DOOR CLOSE] always works but some type of dispatching (I.e. peak up/down) keeps the doors up...

They were amazing. Sad to see them go.
The Oxmoor Macy’s one got modded by Schindler. That used to be Montgomery with Innovation.
EPIC Elevators y'all
I seen elevator doors like this one at a few dept. stores.
These are very very nice elevators. Original too (at least from the touch sensitive era)
I love how the 15 flashed when it was getting impatient.
True, the flashing and buzzer both. In the vid at this final ride this is the only time this happened.
AMAZING!

the Thatcher building I filmed has Otis touch sensitive also. amazing stuff. this place looks nice!
