    Play is an emotional state.
    Those emotions change after success.

Really? There are at least 20 to 30 other songs instrumental and with singing that I love. Play is good but there are so many others and his other albums are unbelievable. Moby is a rare gem 💎 he shines brightly and his music is like anything else out there.

Play had a beautiful simplicity to it which made it so easy to listen to.

He caught a brief time period...where the technology to create things that sounded like Play predated a glut of similar music available on the Internet. When the medium of exchange shifted...from CDs played in coffee shops to a feed from The World...there was simply a lot more "stuff like that" in the mix.
I first listened to Play right around the time I got Sonic Foundry Acid (music software with good time stretching and beatmapping, very automatic feel for dealing with loops). And Play was the quintessential album of songs you could make with programs of that nature. I thought "oh no, all music from now on is going to sound like this" (or something to that extent). That didn't happen, but certainly there's a lot of it.
Still, Play does have "something to it"...and I think he is probably right, that it might be because he wasn't trying that hard or expecting to succeed. So it doesn't feel forced, and I think people can respond to that subliminally.

Well said, exactly what i was thinking. Sometimes the stars align and the world is ready to embrace that sort of music abit like revolutionary ideas. With music once you have had a big hit its hard to repeat it because because it is new and fresh. If you do a similar album people will say its not as good, if you do something diferent they will still complain. And like yourself I too to used Acid Music, great program.

I would say that it had to do with the album being coherent and at the same time a patchwork in some way and also with the fact that it expressed emotion in a meaningful and humble way.

Great reply. I haven't really listened to the subsequent Moby albums but those songs that i have heard are very similar in style to what's on play and thus the opportunity arises where one can say "been there done that, was better the first time."
Play is a very precise and well nuanced snapshot of Moby's world, and it came out at a time where it sounded "fresh," but if you beat the horse till it's dead then stagnation of a kind can occur. Kind of reminds me to what happened to Interpol. Turn on the bright lights was a phenomenal album, but their follow ups were too similar, yet not as good. Same thing with someone like U2. After How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb they went down as well.

Sometimes you get lucky in the music industry! Today the best songs are not even massive hits! Have a look at the singles charts and you’ll see all the talentless garbage in there

Ye, very true. Check “Boo Seeka - Take a look” for example. That song would have been an obvious hit if they’d had more money. But alas

MOBY: Relaxation and honesty was the key to that, together with all your accumulated dj / produced experience, all while being not so deep in the alcohol/whatever spiral that you have gon through. Anyway, despite not having topped it, you did great things, still can do great things, and i will forever worship them and be your supporter. It does not matter what you did, we eventually all recover from the crap we go through. If you get to it again seriously, i bet that you will still do great things.

The guy is a musical Legend. Just like Daft Punk.. Unfortunately, a lot of serious musicians have to have that "break" that makes them famous in the US. In the case of Daft Punk it was after they collaborated with Ferrell.. I agree Ferrell is a great guy, but Daft Punk to me is surreal.. it is unfortunate that these legends had to be discovered after a collab..

Porcelain from the movie “The Beach” had a lot to do with turning people on to Moby. It was Leonardo DiCaprio’s first movie after The mega blockbuster Titanic. Everyone saw it and heard the song.

Moby lost his way, simple as that. He went from being a humble electronica musician who saw astounding growth and success during the peak of the genre's popularity, and then turned into a political stooge spouting off unhinged conspiracy theories on Twitter. Moby lost his mind, and never found it again. If he was smart, he'd retire before he sabotages his career any further.
Sucks saying that, since I grew up with albums like I Like To Score, Play, 18, Everything is Wrong, and Animal Rights (Ambient was also amazing)
