- It's a battle of the Folkies as PP&M, Donovan and the Smothers duke it out with shortened versions of their greatest hits.
This segment concludes with PP&M performing "Day Is Done" (posted elsewhere on this channel).
I remember watching this episode as a small child, this battle of the Folkies was very entertaining and still is to this day. . R.I.P. Tom Smothers.
Great memory.
I watched them regularly. Tommy was hysterical!!!
RIP dear Tom
Boy back in sixties the Smothers Brothers really touched the nerves of America and videos still do. More deep emotions felt back then. Thanks very much for sharing.
We saw Donovan in concert in San Fransisco in 2005 at the Cafe DuNord. He sang a mixture of his old songs and songs from the album that was new at that time, "Beat Cafe," but the highlight of the experience came before the concert, while we were standing in line, waiting to get in. They had an accordianist playing music to entertain us while we waited, and when Donovan's van pulled up in front of the venue, he grabbed me as he walked by and danced me all over the sidewalk!
I saw this whole show as a teenager, and it was big event for me. In an era without MTV, this was as good as it ever got. (These groups were "peacenick" leaders, too, which added to the coolness of it all.)
I tell you anytime before the 80's was a great time to be a kid and let me tell you, we had the best music ever!!! It is so easy to get lost in a 70's time warp. I feel bad for the generation now, all the electronics and lack of raw talent and entertainment!
Always loved Peter, Paul & Mary. Boy can she sing. And what a powerful voice. She's singing way off the MIc and still,
so powerful! They had great 3-part harmony! 👩🏽🎤👨🏽🎤👨🏽🎤🎤 🎵 🎸 🧡
I saw Peter Paul & Mary in Kansas City May 1970.
Still great entertainment! I loved the Smother Brothers comedy along with the songs. This is like fine wine - better with age.
The 60s and 70s were the best decades for music. These, are 3 examples why. A little mama's and papas thrown in there by PP&M.
It's been years since I've heard or seen Donovan. This makes me want to go back and live the 1960s all over again.
***** and what does his teeth have to do with his singing?
***** His teeth were natural, not straightened and artificially whitened like a Ken doll.
***** *Schottisch, and, loads of people have bad teeth
He was ((is) adorable.
I had it great growing up. My sisters and I could play any music as loud as we liked and our parents liked it too! My dad was a banker and a Republican, but he loved the Smothers Brothers, PP&M, Donovan, Beatles, Cat Stevens, Moody Blues, Dylan, The Who, Rolling Stones... in fact, my dad would often tell me to turn it up so he could hear it better. I feel bad for kids growing up now, listening to rap (aagh!). The 60's and 70's were like no other! Glad I grew up when I did!!
This was my favorite show when I was a young child. I remember this episode! It made me talk my folks into bringing me to see Donovan when I was 10 yrs old. As a harmony singer for 35 yrs, how could you not be influenced by P, P, & Mary?
Wonderful, brings back wonderful memories.
I love them
Sitting here through this whole thing with a dumb smile on my face . . . this is incredible.
Love them all! The chocolate song is a hoot.
This was definitely a time when people in the folk movement were trying to dissipate racial tensions...and Tommy's efforts were a good example of this...it didn't last long enough, because we still have problems....there's a big lesson here to be learned...anyone listening??
I adored Mary....I had all of their albums and saw them live several times.
What I like about Donovan he sung songs because he loved to sing and he has a sense of humor which make the audience relax. People (2013) are so critical about everything. Listen to the singing and enjoy people. Gosh! Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
Oh, Mary...We miss you so much....
I was very small when this show was on, but I do remember laughing. Now that I'm older, I know why. Tommy was so funny.
A trip down memory lane! Thank you for posting this. PP&M and the Smothers Brothers were both huge influences (among many others) throughout my life. My husband & I have passed the "Brothers'" humor onto our kids: even now, they can quote lines right back at us about the "Folksinger's Guidebook"! NIce to see these less polished performances from these '60's icons.
Thank you very much for posting this one, I miss all of these groups so much, I know they are not all dead, but their songs made my day when I was growing up in the 60's
Great show that had some iconic musicians from that time, as well as some anti-war jabs at US politicians.
GREAT Memories that can't help but make one smile -:)
Mary is beautiful! 👍🏻👏🏻🎼💐💋😘🥰💗. R I P😢
I have enjoyed listening to all listening to all of these people on tv. I actually had a chance to see Peter, Paul, and Mary in concert in Long Beach Ca. But my favorite was Donovan Leach. Especially his song "Jennifer Juniper". great song.
Richard Young *Donovan Leitch :)
harmke Thanks, I appreciate you correcting my spelling of Donovan Leitch's name. Seriously, I don't like making grammatical or spelling errors, even on the internet.
Always watched their show on Sunday Night!!!
Oh my - this doesn't hold up all that well - but I so remember rehearsals for this show - I worked in the talent coord office - this was one of the most fun times we had getting ready for a show. Everyone was giddy and happy everyone was singing live and not over-dubed live vocals on tapped music.
I disagree. It's timeless!
Not sure what you mean at all this is fantastic
A talented triad of singers and good humor...
This was all wonderful fun. We were so lucky!
When i was about 8 they had what was called a Hootenanny and various musicians came and performed live as they were coming up. I was fortunate to attend one of them and one of the featured artist was Peter Paul and Mary along with The smothers Brothers Fell in love with both groups.Never seen Donovan but liked his music
I love Donovan he's so awesome!! :)
I believe Donovan's daughter is the main character in "Say Anything". One of my favorite movies ever, wish she had a more extensive career.
If you close your eyes, you can go back to these singers!
Donovan was the best. People seemed to react to his songs with more enthusiasm than the others. I love Donovan.
this clip brings back sweet memories...my parents loved these guys...as did me and mysiblings...every Sunday night...they were on cutting edge...put everything onthe line with CBS big shots...they broke alot of barriers...^/^
Mary is so timeless... she could have walked into a club in NYC as is, and no one would know if she was from 1970s or 2000s
I'm liber-able to a degree
I want everybody to be free
But if Donovan for my daughter came to see
Wearin' that fruity feather in his toupee
I'd tell him he'll never get past me!
From a life-long Dylan and Donovan fan
+Jeff Rey lol -:)
I love(d) him with our without the feather lol
Mary Travers was a goddess.
I was fortunate enough to see Peter, Paul & Mary in Seattle in the early 80s. Not a dry eye in the house during Puff the Magic Dragon. Saw Donovan too, great show.
Wow, I’ve been watching this video for 13 years.
Hopefully not continuously! Glad you enjoy.
oh my gosh!!!.....Thank you So much for uploading this!
OMG this is amazing!!!!
Love this!!!
Thank you so much! I don't know how I missed this. I was younger, but didn't miss an episode of The Smothers Brothers or Laugh In. Guess I missed at least one episode. This is so cool...to see the 3 playing together. What a neat video! Thank you!
Have to say I forgot about the Smother's Brothers comidy hour, At 55yrs, this as a blast from the past, Thanks much
PPM were on The Smothers Brothers Sunday 3/23/69. They were live in Houston, TX at the long gone Music Hall. During the concert they stopped and brought out a small TV sat it on a stool center stage and we all watched them perform on the Smothers Brothers show. It was a cool night.
Boy this was great!
This is great!
PP&M would never mock people . they were and are wonderful singers and into
many causes that uplifted Humanity. and Mary was one of a kind and had a great
connecting voice.
And PPM never got their own series that ran three years nor made me roll on the floor with laughter.
They most definitely mocked Donovan and others in I Dig Rock and Roll music. Funny to see them sing it in front if him.
Lots of FUN!!!-thanks for posting
Priceless! That really was the golden age. In this age of insipid, mindless scripted "reality" shows that pollute the airwaves today such talent, spontaneity and creativity wouldn't be allowed.
The Smothers Bro's were so politicaly INcorrect and on TV...GR8T memories!
I remember watching this show. Incredible. Nixon was pissed.
Timeless music. Too bad Tv has regressed to the point quality like this has no home.
I can’t watch regular tv!
I still love Donovan ❤
By the way, thanks to many of the musicians of the 50's and '60's, I started playing guitar and singing when I was 10 years old and have yet to stop. These days, I'm a children's musician and folksinger. You can check out my videos about the BP disaster in the gulf on You Tube under Darasings1.
Wonderful!!
Great video and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for posting!!
WOW!! Thanks for posting this.
WOOOWW^^ This is sooooo hilarious i wish i was born like 40 years earlier :O
I love Donovan.
They had one (at least) all acoustic show because of a studio musicians strike. I wonder if this was one. Thanks for the upload.
Wow! I quit watching tv in 1968 and never knew they sang This Land song during such a divisive times, and I never knew until recent times they were banned.
Puff the Magic Dragon is still one of favorite songs.
HILARIOUS!
Anyone remember the one they did about the school where they didn't have sand in their sandbox, but instead Tom says that's where they kept the Pumas.. lol I have that one on LP record.. That was hilarious!
I'm 5'10" and I have not seen this funny and entertaining video in a long time!
After seeing this (back then) I went out and bought a Donovan album.
The word "Negro" was not a so-called dirty word. Even 'colored" was and IS used by the NAACP. That's what the "C" is. But today we choose not to use "Negro" or "colored" because they are considered offensive. But back in the 60s, 70s 'negro" was not offensive. That's why the audience doesn't gasp or show any signs of discomfort when Tommy says it.
Smothers Brothers were great.....I've always liked them.....
Puff the Magic Dragon.....great song....

former vietnam medic
that guy sure has a cool hat, I'll have to go down to the medieval fair and pick one up
That's the truly sad (and slightly terrifying) part, that you hesitated to post this. Never, EVER be afraid to offend...
IMDB says it's from March 23, 1969. An honor to be on your blog!
Funny that in the full version of "I Dig Rock and Roll Music" Peter Paul and Mary actually make fun of Donovan.
I love this too much haha
From a time when the times were a changing and artistry was actually changing the sentiment of teh times in a positive fashion
lordie be am i that old, watched it, loved it
I loved the music and watching the people... like the lady with the white high boots...go go boots behind donovan.
music ahhh
PPM will be missed... where are those records?
Mary Travers was such a fox back in the day!
Right on ladyjoanna4 it was the best of times,I wish everyone could expierence the 60's-and 70's Dale 65
Fire!!!!
PP&M win hands down! :) But I like them all!
@ronct: They're being ironic. See: "And when the Beatles tell you they've got a word, "love", to sell you, they mean exactly what they say." and how they want to say something about rock and roll music, "but if I really say it, the radio won't play it unless I lay it between the lines."
I read an interview with Noel "Paul" Stookey where he talked this song and it was clear that they were being ironic and that they really didn't "dig" rock and roll music.
Cool, that was awesome!
I love them all but the result has to be:
1) Peter, Paul and Mary
2) Smother's Brothers
3) Donovan
For me, it's: 1. Peter Paul and Mary 2. Donovan 3. Smothers Brothers
@happy1thailand You're mistaken, the Bible does not elevate a man as being better than woman. It gives them different roles, and it does say the man is the head of the woman. There are examples in scripture of women as a judge, a woman who sold fine fabric, and even wisdom is portrayed not as a man but a woman.
I have heard of the tamoshanter before. Thanks for clarifying that for me. I am part Scottish myself. No, never had haggis.
PP&M for the win. :)
ahhhh the days when popular music was good....sigh
Genius!
@cscomo - I think you need to read the lyrics again as none of those artists are slammed in the song? The song is "I Dig Rock and Rocll Music' as they are only mentionting some artists they dig.
I think you are so right
_Donovan_ taught _John Lennon_ the Finger Picking guitar style back in 1968 when *The Beatles* went to India to study *TM*
with the _Maharishi Mahesh Yogi_ While there, _Donovan_ taught _John Lennon_ the guitar picking technique .
Which John incorporated later that year on _The Beatles "White Album"_ ..🚶🏽♀️🚶🏽♀️🚶🏽♀️🚶🏽♀️
I've often wondered if Paul suffers from back problems caused by having to stoop for so long to the microphones adjusted for Peter and Mary.
Yes!!! I was wondering that too! Why they couldn't all have their own mic I don't know. It actually looks short for Mary too.
Mary Travers is so hot.
Donovan Is different class here!
I love donovan's hat!!!
I completely agree.........
Don blew em all away, heck his Hat blew them all away!
