Just started multipitching myself and I was wondering why the twin ropes for a sport route. I´ve only seen it in traditional climbing and always thought that was for trad routes where there is a lot of zig zag... but since I don´t know much about the topic I´d appreciate any knowledge you can share!!
Hi! I use double ropes for multiple reasons in bolted multi pitches. To start with, we need a second rope for the rappels. There is also the rope drag as you mentioned. The bolts in these wild multi pitches are not straight so there is Zig-Zag. This is particularly important for long pitches ~50m. It's always good to have 2 ropes in case one gets damaged and furthermore, if we struggle with a move and we need to aid climb, it's easier having 2 ropes (one to hang and the other one to clip above). I only use single ropes for single pitch sports climbing, for very specific alpine routes without rappels and for glacier traversing. Cheers!
