listening to this for the first time is kind of insane, it's like the Missing Link between their old sound and their new sound. very very cool and good.
Better than the polished album version. The opening especially pushes that feeling of wanderlust, longing, and subtle regret that makes modest mouse so beautiful.
Same Karl. This is the only version as far as I'm concerned. 4:20-5:45 cannot be replicated. I get chills every time I hear it, been getting them ever since I was a kid. Thank you for finding this. A nice way to cap off a night binging old Modest.

always preferred this version, and after the napster/limewire days, I could no longer find it. So thanks for putting this up. This version along with many other MM songs I could find for download back in the day got me through the death of a friend of mine, named Mike. And now it's getting me through the death of my brother, Mike, 12 or so years later. Amazing how music digs up the shit and helps us heal. I needed this song right now. This means the world to me, thank you, thank you.
I love both versions, Ive grown up my whole life literally from birth to now listening to modest mouse, They inspire me so much and keep me going, its amazing that so few people know of them
IKR?! It's like they're stuck in between worlds where they have grammies and have hit the top of the charts but unless you're an indy rock fan most people don't really know any more than their name.
I think if this and the early draft of Float On, along with the other songs on Good News... had the same kind of extended, loose and raw structures to them that album could’ve been their most compelling work. In stead it was only the beginning of the end of their amazing run as a band.
It may just be me, but it really feels like in this last year or two, music from the old, old days is really starting to shine as ultra-nostalgic. I love it.
I remember back in the day of Kazaa I downloaded this and it was called "The Ocean Breeze is Sally." I was so confused when it was a different version on the music video. I think this is better by far.
Isaac is not that hard to understand! Jesus, I swear a ton of people have to be talk to/sung to very very slowly, very clearly with no accent or unique speech pasterns.
He's quoting the part of Virginia Woolfes "Mark on the Wall" which is shown in the video obviously. It's where the band got it's name from. "I wish I could hit upon a pleasant track of thought, a track indirectly reflecting credit upon myself, for those are the pleasantest thoughts, and very frequent even in the minds of modest mouse-coloured people, who believe genuinely that they dislike to hear their own praises. They are not thoughts directly praising oneself; that is the beauty of them..."
Yay! I had this song back in the day. It did not take long to find some live earlier versions of the studio produced ones that I tended to like more. I'm all kinds of nostalgic now. Wish I wasn't here but there again to tell myself to know certain decisions would lead down a certain path. But anyone can say that to themselves. If anything Modest Mouse teaches it's maybe never to late? I hope so.
Can’t believe I’m just discovering this now! I really love older Modest Mouse’s sound, something is so hauntingly beautiful about it. Plus this is one of my favorite Good News tracks so this is perfect :)
With my teeth, my lips, my head in the ground I hit the fish and I'm making this sound Said if you want to go walk around, feel what it's like all down Well with your teeth, your lips, your head in the ground I hear the fish and I'm making this sound Saying I don't know, I don't know, I don't
Thanks for lyrics included. I heard this before the album version and I would have just inserted this as a live track rather than the final mix. Amazing.

I like how this one sounds better... But I like both. I think they just play things differently sometimes live... Which I love that a lot about this band sometimes it may sound the same and sometimes they play a song that sounds different than the studio version but so awesome!!

Well maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both grow old
I don't know I don't know I don't know I hope so

I got my mind I got my eye I just don't think so
Well I don't know if you took another car if you couldn't cure
But I don't know I don't know I don't really think so

I don't know I don't know I don't really think
And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both live again

And maybe when we die once you get to live again
Well I hope so I hope so I don't really think so
