In my humble opinion - I am no musician - this is one of the best songs ever written, both in terms of melody and heartfelt lyrics. Dame Shirley Bassey also delivers easily the best version I have ever heard of it - this one. Tom Jones, Cliff Richard, Roberta Flack, even the original by Ben E. King, simply are no match. Thanks for posting
This recording of the song is the most appealing of all that are available to hear because there is a certain amount of innocence that is present which has not been lost over the years in which an artist develops.
An incredibly beautiful melody sung by one of the best vocal musicians going. The incredible thing about Dame Shirley is the way she just nails it every time. The consistency over the years is remarkable.
I first heard this beautiful song in the '60's by Ben E King & thought how strangely it imitated real life. Now after over 50 odd years I've stumbled onto it again...& what memories it has evoked! Lot's of other singers have performed this song but Shirely Bassey gives a stellar performance here with lot's of emotion & passion...perhaps the best version!
Oh well thank you very much for the invitation or muchisimas gracias por la invitacion or muito obrigado pelo convite or molte grazie per l'invito Mr. Elliott
There is hope in our contemporary society! Listen to Angelina Jordan. If you don't know her, she is now an 18-year-old Norwegian singer who won Norway's got talent when she was seven. She's an old soul and many of her renditions of jazz classics are amazing (Billy Holliday eg). I recommend the inspired song she composed after the death of her beloved grandfather. A live version where she is accompanied on the piano or the original video which illustrates her loss through images are very beautiful. The song is called "A Million Miles" here on youtube. I'm not comparing Angelina to Shirley Bassey as those kind of comparisons are meaningless. Angelina is just 18 yrs. She has gotten a lot of recognition but she's far from a superstar. I hope she gets the recognition she deserves which does not mean she will ever have the following of a "pop" star as her unique sound and that she sings a lot of jazzy renditions make her too sophisticated to have a following like Taylor Swift eg.
Found this through that conversation on Candice v Bassey. For me Bassey still the one who truly owns this song. She LIVES it when she sings it. Candice, like Carey said, " makes it a vehicle for her voice" . Personally I think a car is a vehicle, a song is not. ;-) Thanks very much for uploading this version. :-)
My Dear Miss Shirley Bassey I am a very fond friend of all your music but I was especially fond of the 1994 remake of the something album and it was burned in a fire on me and I can't find it anywhere could you have it in your heart to send me an album please somehow let me know and I will send you my address you're still and always will be the best your friend Dan always
Daniel V: Phew!!! You're pushing your luck a bit!!!! Chances are she won't even see this, never mind send you anything. Anyway though, God loves a tryer. 😀😀😀😀😀😂😂
Clément Grenier Petula Clark didn't get as much credit as she deserved. I was in love with so many women in the sixties. but I was just a little boy and they were too far from me. like out of my league. but if they were close enough to me to see how romantic I was and what I felt for them they would pick me first. LOL
As good as she is, Dame Shirley struggled to achieve the heights in the Industry. When she started back in 1953, there was no mass-communication. Shirley started in local musicals as a teenager, and they gradually expanded into London and all parts of the UK. Once the producers noticed that Shirley could REALLY Sing, she eventually took off her dancing shoes and started headlining. Then, music producers discovered her and she received her first recording contract. Shirley's received her first top 10 around 1957, and her first of many number 1 hits in 1958. Even with this fame, she still had to perform sometimes 2 or 3 times a night, and was always on the road. Being on the road 10 months a year resulted in hurting her personal/family life. Finally after 10-12 years of struggling Shirley achieved enough fame and fortune to become more particular on how often she would have to perform. Today, as you have stated, it is much different. But, in the long-run many of the new generation artists simply come and go. Shirley released her latest album 1.5 years ago, to celebrate 70 years in the business, and it was a top 5 hit for her. This led to another Record. Dame Shirley Bassey is the only artist in history who has had a top 40 record in 7 consecutive decades!! With all that said, in my humble opinion, Shirley is a beautiful woman by any international standards, AND her musical concert performances are legendary!!
Dame Shirley Bassey was born in Cardiff Wales, and thus is a United Kingdom Citizen. Her father was of Nigerian African ancestry and her mother was of English Ancestry.
The best version of this song

From an era when you had to be talented to make it. not like now when it is all about looks .

Is she happen to be an African American? She's so gorgeous i could tell
Dame Shirley Bassey was born in Cardiff Wales, and thus is a United Kingdom Citizen. Her father was of Nigerian African ancestry and her mother was of English Ancestry.
I have done the most current version & I feel very honoured to be among so many great artistes including Dame Shirley Bassey.
