- Located in the Bandai-Asahi National Park, Goshikinuma ponds (五色沼) are a cluster of 5 volcanic lakes at the foot of Mt. Bandai.
When Mt. Bandai erupted in 1888, Goshiki-numa, which translates as "Five-Colored Ponds were formed. In actuality dozens of lakes were created due to eruption, but the Goshiki-numa Ponds are the most famous.
The five main lakes are Bishamon, Aka, Ao, Benten, and Midoro, and their colors range from stunning lime green to deep turquoise to a topaz blue. These colors are caused by the eruption, which created the varying levels of minerals in the water.
A scenic walking route (3.6km) guides visitors around the ponds. Along the way, we were treated to a spectacular views of the lakes and surrounding forests, as well as the occasional glimpse of local wildlife (bear warning). The lakes are surrounded by lush forests of brilliant shades of colors, which add to the overall beauty of the area.
Hiking in the Goshikinuma Ponds is such a breathtaking experience that one shouldn’t miss when visiting Urabandai. We felt a total satisfaction after this trip!
