  • Friends of the LBJ Library had the rare opportunity to hear from David and Julie Eisenhower in a program on January 26, 2012. The daughter of Richard Nixon and grandson of Dwight D. Eisenhower shared fascinating memories of life in the White House and post-presidential years. While they didn't endorse a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, they offered an assessment of what the American voting public is seeking in 2012. Co-sponsored by the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History.

I got to travel with them on a small cruise. It was a D day cruise. I got to talk to them on the buses to the sites and also on the ship. They were wonderful. They could not have been nicer. They are also a wealth of knowledge and stories. Just a great couple.

I was a contemporary of theirs and watched from a considerable distance in complete admiration at the "puppy love" that was obvious between David and Julie while their fathers were in office.

Julie and David were the cutest couple and the Nation's Sweethearts when they were dating.
David still has the same mannerisms.... Julie was so pretty and she still is!

To me I always thought about Eisenhower being President and a 5 Star General. There had been 33 (I think) men previous to him as President. There had only been, what, 3 or 4 men holding the rank of 5 Star General. His heart was always with the Army and its men.

I have stories about both David and Julie. I interviewed David for `Eye` Magazine `What`s Sexy?` Told me back in the Sixties his `dream girl` after Julie was another Julie, Julie Christie. About Julie whom I was profiling for a cover story `Ladies Home Journal`..when Richard Nixon read the piece (faintly satirical) he quashed it. I was told he then added `Sandra Shevey` to his Hate List. It is dismaying to realize one`s heros have feet of clay but I have to say I am disappointed in David`s memory of Suez. American war ships were flying Egypt colours and when the SS Liberty fired believing their waters to have been invaded by Egypt American sea men waves them down. At the very moment this fiasco was going on Arthur Krim, Chief Democratic Fundraiser, was dropping millions of dollars in the lap of Lyndon Johnson. Johnson, fearing that the SS Liberty scenario might imperil the transfer of funds rushed Krim to account. As the story goes Krim was confused, wondered what was the rush, had figured on getting a drink and a meal first. Later of course he discovered what was up. David was re-fresh with his history. These are important facts to get right.

Really? That's curious. There seems no resemblance. Anyway, Julie seems very interesting. She handles herself well. It can't be easy.

David Eisenhower, as a university professor, LOVED to talk. Gawd, make him stop! But the other thing that annoys me is he never directly answers a question head-on. He glosses past the actual question and just goes off on whatever tangent *he* wants to talk about. And talk. And talk. And talk.

FYI.....NEITHER Johnson nor Nixon started tha VIETNAM war!
The first "advisors" with a small compliment of soldiers were sent to Viet Nam by TRUMAN and EISENHOWER to assist the FRENCH.
      GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT.
