    Homeward Path especially needs some reprints. I really hate playing against theft decks, so I would like to add this into literally every deck, but it's just so expensive. I also use Sword of Hearth and Home a lot, that has a similar effect of flickering a creature you own and returning it under your control.

    I think the point of knowing when to let things go is very important.
    A decade or two ago we had a player in our group that was obsessed with crafting the "perfect" deck. For him that was a deck that had answers to any given situation. Whenever he lost a game he would add more answers to whatever he lost against. If your deck folds to any single card, it's a bad deck after all!
    Eventually his deck couldn't seem win anymore. Because while his deck had all the answers, it wasn't able to ask questions of its own. And obviously he often drew the wrong and increasingly narrow answers. It had become a pile of stuff with no clear path to victory.
    There is a point where a deck can become too prepared.

    Speaking of fogs, Mandate of Peace is a wildly underrated fog effect. I've played it a number of times in my Council of Four deck and it always feels brutal to the opponent I screwed over with it. Besides preventing damage more decisively than a fog (in case of "damage can't be prevented" effects), saying no to casting any other spells and canceling any attack triggers is wild. It is weaker against multiple combats though.

    On fogs: YES. I started running Dawn Charm in most of my decks. For 1W you get to either regenerate, counter a spell that targets you (like Rivers Rebuke), or fog. That's a lot of ways to trip somebody up. And while it's reasonable to expect interaction in white, most still don't expect a fog!

      I love dawn charm and just cards with edge cases in general. I have a ghyrson starn deck that relies heavily on him, obviously, so he becomes a popular target for strong commander hate like darksteel mutation or imprisoned in the moon. Two excellent relatively new cards in that deck are demand answers and highway robbery. They're both just rummage spells that are perfectly playable, but they also have the corner case of "actually imprisoned in the moon only slows me down because I'm going to sac my land commander to highway robbery and put it in the command zone". It's something a red/blue deck usually can't answer but those cards make it seamless.

      This challenge the stat segment made me build Indominus. While working on it I think I noticed a mistake.
      Indominus only gives “Hexproof”counters not “Hexproof from x”

    Interesting that specific hate, like RIP is being frowned upon but a darksteel mutation that can likewise turn a deck off is being encouraged.

    • @jjvh500
      @jjvh500 Місяць тому

      Darksteel mutation, Song of the Dryads, and Imprisoned in the Moon specifically have always been head-scratchers to me for this exact reason. Cards that are easier to deal with, like Dranith Magistrate, are very salty but also incentivize multiple people to remove them and every color can! But locking down a commander, in Commander, by a card type that is notoriously hard for some colors to remove is somehow okay?
      In higher power pods I get it. If we're bordering cEDH, I would expect more annoying forms of removal. But if I'm against a newer player, or just at a lower powerlevel, and I lock them off of their commander, I can't imagine that would be "fun"

    • @andrewb378
      @andrewb378 29 днів тому

      One new tech I love against darksteel mutation and imprisoned in the moon in red specifically is demand answers and highway robbery. They're pretty standard rummage spells that don't immediately stand out but they also do a very good job of removing those potentially game-ending cards.

  • @UnreasonableOpinions
    @UnreasonableOpinions Місяць тому +1

    In terms of removal for problem creatures, Make an Example is startlingly strong once you get used to treating it like single-target removal with upside instead of a bad boardwipe. Since you get to choose which pile dies, you can always pick the one with the creature that needs to go, and anything else they put in it is a bonus. If they go all-or-one and the all is so good it's better than killing the one, it's become upside. You also get to hit at least one creature from every other player - or if you want to play nice, you can promise them if they make a pile of zero cards you'll choose that one. I have seen players who should have countered it let it go because they thought I was casting a bad wipe, sacrifice prevention is nearly unplayed, and even if they flicker away the target you can just get value from their other things instead.

  • @SirGrimLockSmithVIII

    A good way for Blue Players to deal with treasures (and artifact tokens in general) that hasn't been explored as much is through an old 4 CMC enchantment known as March of the Machines. It turns all noncreature artifacts into creatures with power and toughness based on their mana value. Given that artifact tokens don't have a cmc, they turn into 0/0s with summoning sickness and instantly die upon hitting the field, with no way for players to sacrifice them for mana unless they have a haste enabler. Even then, it still stops players from sandbagging treasure, forcing them to instantly use it up even when they can't use the spare mana for anything.
    This is still a situational niche card that can't be put in every blue deck, and I realize that there's very few ways to be proactive with the card beyond inserting it in an enchantment matters deck, so there's definitely that to consider. However, if you can drop it against a pesky treasure player, it really does a lot of work.

    I personally love blessed respite. Fogs in general are great, and they go in any deck that can regularly draw a lot of cards, but blessed respite in particular is good at higher power pods where a win with thassa's oracle is a little more likely since you can respond to thoracle's "scry x and win" trigger by putting cards back the library so it doesn't end the game. Yes, there are 1 mana fogs that exist, but none of them have the ability to also blank arguably the strongest win condition in the game. If I'm playing fogs in green, it's the first one I put in.

    • @frontend5347
      @frontend5347 26 днів тому

      @@1notdeadfred Spidersilk Armor is great as well, as it generally buffs your creature's toughness. So if reducing the amount of flyers coming in, depending on the deck you build (not for going wide strategies): Silent Arbiter, crawlspace, Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist. Raking Canopy works only against small Fry, Meishin, the Mind cage in general and only if you're planning on not winning by combat damage with "normal sized" critters. Sandwurm Convergence is with 8 mana only viable for ramp strategies, but a complete shut-off. Repeated goading can be an option, as using a combination of cards like Basilisk Collar + Skirk Fire Marshall (the later in a Goblin Tribal).

    My budget way of punching through when the board stalls is with "all creatures able to block this must do so" effects like breaker of armies or prized unicorn. Admittedly most of these work better in green, which has overrun effects anyway (breaker of armies because it's 8 mana, and prized unicorn because, well, it's green) but they're much cheaper than craterhoof behemoth, and can force a lot more damage through than, for example, the actual card "overrun". Definitely not the ideal solution as they don't have haste, and if they're removed after you declare attackers then it can cost you the game, but on a budget? Pretty good, imo.

If you’re going to lose the game if you don’t kill players early, you’re literally forfeiting if you slow down your tempo. I personally really enjoy playing aggro. 1:00:00 I'm confused. Otowara doesn't do anything to Thassa's wins. The trigger is an ETB and still goes off regardless. The devotion usually doesn't matter because either they have an arbitrarily large devotion, or they have 0 cards in library, which still wins because, even on an empty board, their devotion is equal to cards in their library, 0.
    What Otowara is be a utility land with a difficult to interact with removal ability. Can't counter spell, only counter activated abilities.

    I'm trying to do too many things with my decks. So operating at all tends to take precedence over interactions in first builds. Though I'll often have a Ghost Quarter, maybe a couple of spot things in the first mix. My built in instincts tend to build less for protection, but more for threat diversity, so if my first couple things are creatures, then I want to back it up with an artifact or enchantment. Like a vehicle, equipment, or haste source. That way I can keep developing my board and drawing cards, but hopefully not exposing everything to the same board wipe.

      Once some testing has happened I may refine to add answers and other cards as I feel they'd suit the synergies of my deck. For instance a R/G Bard Class deck that must be mostly 3CMC and up so I can Violent Outburst to try and find the Bard Class. Last game lost to some equipment and a rogue's passage. Ah, maybe deck needs more disenchants, has a couple, but one that's on a Historic permanent (I did swing with the Weatherlight Vehicle) might be nice. Boseiju would be sweet, but is pricy. But maybe I should pick up another Kogla and Yidaro, or at least dig up a Sylvok Replica. (To be fair, even with a disenchant, there was an Osgir and a Rogue's passage, I was probably dead to rights anyways, but the optionality would be nice.

    I kinda see it as a band argument when a graveyard player calls out cards like Rest in Peace and Leyline of the Void unfun, when the typical graveyard player accelerates his gameplan by manifold due to re-using resources excessively that other people don't. Just think of the Muldrotha player (okay, extreme example) that fetches once each of his turns, replays a seal of something, cracks an executioner's bauble, sacrifices Steve once again without even expending 1 hand card. Not putting cards to protect the own graveyard into the deck, as they dillute the own gameplan and just jamming more cards to benefit from the exploit of the GY zone needs to be punished severely. It's the same argument as complaining about cards like ruination, primal order and price of progress when one's own deck basically plays no more basic lands, as the Gaea's Cradles, Urborgs and filterlands of the world are so much better than any basic land if left unchecked and unpunished.
    At least in my opinion, this is just a poor excuse to build bad decks and complaining about being punished when a one-sided strategy gets hated out of the game that if left unchecked, dominates the kitchen table. Or even on a non-cEDH table to complain about staxx-pieces like collector Ouphe (hello getting-out-of-hand-treasures!) or rule of law (I love you too, spellslinger decks). Same is true in the other way round when there are no such cards present in one's own decks and complain that not every other player on the table plays ramp-into-fatty-and-biggest-or-most-critters-win type of games.
    I see this kind of behaviour as well in my gaming group. Often, me or 1 other player are the "police" decks at the table that try to stop 1 player from completely escalating so that everyone gets a chance of doing something within the game. This would be easier if people committed in general a few slots in their deck to rein in overly one-sided decks that are hard to tackle if there are not numerous answers to their game plan (e.g. enchantment heavy decks, spell slinger, land ramp, artifact matters, graveyard centric) that abuse heavily this one angle to get out on top of other decks by a mile.
    I'm not talking about having or using cards like humility, Gaddock Teeg or stasis, as one can't be prepared against everything. But expecting a decent amount of cards to interact with other player's boards and graveyards should be a given. And playing a knight of Autumn as a flexible answer to both board presence as well as interaction doesn't sound like big of a stretch to add to about any deck.
    My own Yoshimaru aggro deck didn't have enough interaction to remove effects like ghostly prison, which prevent me from swinging at an opponent - and due to the often low interaction amount in our group, I couldn't even use politics to ask for someone to remove that thing so that I won't swing at the others, when I once build this deck in a similar style as the rest of the group does. Since then, I'm trying to upgrade the deck with more cards like Loran of the Third path to fit the legends matter theme of the deck. It actually makes the game more enjoyable to have someone do his thing for a bit and then kick it in the bin so another player gets to shine :)

    I loathe how people think that "graveyard hate" needs to be remove ALL cards from a graveyard and thus turning off the ENTIRE strategy for certain decks.
    I wish they had more say "Exile 1-3 cards from a graveyard" instead

      I think it would be better, but at this point, mass grave removal is too efficient at 0 mana (land drop or leyline) or 2 mana. I play Shred Memory and Rakdos Charm that has additional modes. Noxious Revival and Naya Charm both have a hidden grave hate mode to "counterspell" single target reanimation.

    Of all things graveyard hate is the one I have the least to almost none in my decks. It's usually because I have enough targeted removal/boardwipes that are more then enough to keep a graveyard deck in check.

    I cannot be pushed to add more and more boardwipes in the format. I have been so off boardwipes lately unless they are asymmetrical. I have been saying to people more and more, I'd rather just lose and start a new game that way than start back at square one through a board wipe.
    Edit: I should have waited a minute to post my comment, I love the idea brought up next. The idea of if your commander has ward, I will pressure your life total all game, is an amazing idea. Its a way to engage with the cards through other methods of attack that I hadn't really been considering.

    I played a game on Tabletop Sim last night and realised I need to add a Homeward Path to my Surrak Dragonclaw deck. Yeah turns out my deck doesnt do well against itself since I run decently big creatures haha xD Seriously though, Homeward Path is underrated and when I see people playing Dimir, Blue or Black, im going to naturally expect at least one or a few cards in their decks that can steal creatures from the board or, more often, from graveyards. It's annoying lol

    I find myself using more of those auras that for little mana give you a card almost instantly (like Keen Sense, Sixth Sense, One With Nature) even if they 2 for 1 me later, I already got back the card. Well Rested is similar to those cards. "Are you sure you want to spend your precious targetted removal (your life insurance) on my mana dork to deny me some cards later? OK then, I'm pretty sure the rest of the players will be ecstatic to see it happen"

    You make a great point about Silver Bullet deployment.
    Had one of the regulars start running Solemnity to deal with my counters shenanigans.
    3 times when we were randomly assigned to the same pod, someone else went off with an Infinite I could have stopped, and after the game was over, I showed him the answer each time, and he’d get frustrated while demanding why I didn’t stop X from winning.
    He got the same answer each time, “You made it clear my active participation in this game was unwanted, so why should I go on topdecking for some Enchantment/Artifact removal, when it’s statistically more likely you’ll find the other half of one of your multiple infinites, or a Tutor that amounts to the same thing, than I am to both find an answer to eliminate your Solemnity, *plus* a card to let me ram that answer through successfully?”
    Call it pettiness if you wish, but if you come packing a 5-drop Silver Bullet so narrow in application I know it was intended *specifically* with me particularly in mind, and you’ve successfully deployed it to drop my chances of winning to near-zero, *why in the name of Garfield would I not choose ANYONE ELSE’S victory in preference to yours?*
    At least if I kingmake against Mr. Silver Bullet, I’m doing something to add downside to his brewing choice.
    If someone Arena Rector’s out a Solemnity on T2, rather than anything to advance their own gameplan, I’m not going to help them win.

    14:54 the reason landfall is nearly impossible to answer is bc you can’t unramp them, and unless you’re playing aggro the 40 life format and 4v4 makes it hard to answer any one player, especially early on. And playing small 1-4 power creatures usually isn’t enough to knock them out of the game. You usually have to get a better value engine and push through faster than them.

    So I'm gonna lead into this before watching the video but I notice myself holding onto silver bullet preparation cards a little too closely - stuff like red elemental blast, settle the Wreckage, and other gotcha cards because of partially that it's funny when it works, and partially because I'm worried maybe a little too much about getting caught with my pants down and not building into my own synergies enough.
    I'll update my comment when I get to listen, and see if that's something that's addressed. Can't wait to actually watch it.

      Pretty sure the other person might have been referring to Grand Abolisher. Grand Abolisher is typically used in White decks to stop others from interacting with your win attempt, and Otawara is one of the few ways commonly seen in cEDH (other than counterspells) to remove it.

    Im glad you guys brought up land destruction here. I feel like it needs to come out to play more often than it does. Theres a lot of ways to take out a single problematic land and a lot of the spells that can have a fail case of being able to hit an artifact instead. A couple favorites of mine take it a step farther than that - Aftershock lets you take out an artifact, land, OR creature for 2RR and 3 life. And Violent Impact lets you hit an artifact or land for 3R, or cycle it for 2. If your deck has red, I don't think that running some land hate should be off the table JUST BECAUSE someone isnt going to like the fact you blew up a land.

    im not playing in a meta where those are needed.
    cause noone plays those ridiculus lands that produces more mana then you put in or other unfairly strong lands.
    and thats also part of a powerlvl i dont wanna participate.
    you can still play them thou, just make sure you land on the right pod.
    to be fair its not as easy as 20 years ago, cause we allready close to tripple the amount of new cards per year compare to then.

    My playgroup has become very adept to play various boardwipes and it makes the game way too long. I'm trying to use more protection spells and creatures (Selfless spirit, boromir, dawn's truce) instead of counters so if I can snatch a victory being the only guy with creatures in play after an opponent board wipe, I can close the game in a way that feels better, instead of giving the game to the player who can rebuild again first.

    I feel ward isn’t so bad. 1 and 2 mana removal has been part of the format for forever at this point. Removal has gotten so efficient it almost feels silly to play things, especially anything that that costs more than 3.
    So many fun commanders have a hard time sticking around, it’s almost pointless to play a commander that costs more than 3. At least make people pay to remove it.
