  • Warning: The VHS tape was in extremely poor condition. There is nothing I can do about a 29 year old video tape. You're lucky to get this, as bad as it looks.
Eumenides is the last play of the Oresteia - the oldest surviving classical tragedy. Having avenged his father's murder by killing his mother, Orestes - now pursued by the Furies because he has committed matricide - takes refuge at the shrine of Apollo, who promises protection and sends him to seek justice from Athena. The ghost of Clytemnestra rouses the Chorus of Furies to bring her murderer to justice.
Athena, goddess of wisdom, judges between Orestes, who murdered his mother to avenge his father, and the Furies, who demand revenge for the murder of Clytemnestra. Her decision reflects the historical turning in Athens from personal retribution to community law.

Thank you. I was 16 when it was shown on TV. I taped it but such was the price of blank tapes back then, it eventually got taped over. Harrison really really deserved the European Poetry Translation Award for this. It's a swine to translate anyway, but to do so and create poetry in it's own right is genius.

I would love to see many plays like this in the near future! Perhaps I'll take a trip to Athens every once in a while when I'm mature and see some of these performances live. Some of the amphitheaters that once held these plays are still in use for the same purpose!

Still, they preface Athena's argument for her position on things.

The votes were equal as this is a case of the conflicts of two rights. Even if Orestes came with a conquering army he would still have to kill his Mother. He may at first seem the hopeful instrument of justice, who rectifies Usurpation by force where there is no other authority or force to do it. But, he is also defiling his natural blood bond, a bond more sacred than mere civic duty. And, as with men, the spirits can't agree what is Just. Did he do his duty, or is he a vigilante and bad example. It's fucked up beyond all recognition from the start.
