- WEEK 4 in our off grid garden, where we are growing a FOOD FOREST. Today we create a BANANA CIRCLE, Missy makes an AMAZING SPIRAL BED using NO DIG methods AND we finally get some seeds in! We're starting to present like an off grid version of GARDENERS' WORLD!
Join us on week 4 of the creation of our new FOOD FOREST following PERMACULTURE PRINCIPLES. Where we aim to beat the cost of living crisis and become self sufficient and in a sustainable way.
You can follow our progress from day 1, the very beginnings of our food forest as we create SWALES, plant trees, learn the whats, the whys and also how to follow permaculture principles, what are guildings, compost and soil regeneration.
We are The Wildlanders Off Grid! A family learning how to live the good life sustainably and on a tight budget. Subscribe to watch our adventures as we turn our 1.3 hectares of Portuguese Wild Lands into a little slice of off grid paradise!
We hope to inspire others to make their dreams a reality.
We've lived on the road as nomads for 4 years and now we're creating our dream homestead, off grid in central Portugal and living simply off the land.

This is a highly enjoyable series. The style of your presentation, knowledge and practical skills is better than some purpose made tv programmes that I have seen. Excellent results and I hope that you will get a good rainfall before it starts off on a summer footing.
Wow, thank you! Really enjoying making our new format too if I'm honest it's a lot of work, but making what's currently and basically gardening programs is pretty nice!!
Thanks very much 🌱🌱🌱🌱!
It’s so lovely to see how happy and relaxed you both are, your enthusiasm is contagious! Good luck with your growing season! Laura ❤❤❤
Aw thanks Laura, I think its, where we, are happiest, growing and in the garden 💚🌱💚
Are you growing?
Just salad bits in tubs in the garden and greenhouse, although I’m really not organised this year so it maybe little plugs!
@@mafish7962 I hear you,, we're Kate on our sowing, often in the UK we'd buy a load of plugs 🌱💚🌱 so get sowing!!! 💚
Great progress!! 👌🥰👌
Thank you! 🤗
The spiral looks like a big ear from up above👍🏻
I thought that too!
👂🤔 Was a random shape missy created, but we hear you 😀

Only just catching up with you two again after a busy few weeks on our own project. Everything looks absolutely amazing, and so professional. You work so hard, and it's paying off. Love from a very cold Spain at the moment . Love to Rosie ♥️💙♥️
Welcome back! and thanks Patricia, what's your project?
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid We started our life here in Spain 17 years ago . We bought some land & lived totally off grid in a little wooden Chalet for 6 years. We then built our next home, and after 10 years , this time last year we sold up and bought an old house, unlived in for over 20 years. So at the ripe old age of 73 we started again. It's been hard, stressful, but we love it. We not the sort to sit still, and think our family are quietly proud of us. Watching people like you gives us the inspiration to keep going, maybe not on your scale due to our age, but you not only inspire , you make a feel good , happy, fun & educational video that's so entertaining. Love it ! ❤️
Aw thanks for the compliment, and brilliant on you, I'd really love an old house, maybe like you will do that in a few years perhaps, as, well as I'm fast catching you up!
Good luck on your project, love to see some pictures 💚
ROCK! Im loving this journey, well done, you are all such an inspiration!
Aw thanks smiffy 💚
Are you back over in the summer?

Warning .... the site looks amazing but you guys should prepare for the hot summer and clean around because the fire risks .keep going you guys are up to something amazing.
Thanks, we're working hard to be ready for spring and summer, we were here all last summer for the extreme heatwave so we know what's a coming. And it's HOT 🔥🔥🔥😎
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys.
Our pleasure! And same to you 👌💚🌱
Promising progress 👍 Marvellous to observe your hard work being accomplished....step by step. Looking forward to 2024 already ☺👍
Thanks a ton, you over in 24?
Wishful thinking....would love to but too far away....
💗
🌱💚🌱
Fabulous, amazing, fantastic just loving your journey. Am I jealous? Heck I certainly am😂. You really are doing a great job and actually I would sooner watch your channel over gardeners world.Learning so much from you. It seems more and more people I talk to here in greater Manchester are turning their gardens over to growing food, and you can forget about getting an allotment because they are like trying to find hens teeth. Looking forward to the next one.
Aw thanks Michelle that's, a lovely compliment 💚
We're also going to try add in and focus on food and sustainable growing that's not necessarily Portugal based as you rightly point out so many are starting to learn to grow food vs the supermarket.
How's your growing?
What have you got planned in Manchester??
🌱💚🌱💚
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid sadly we have had to move from our small holding where we were pretty much semi self sufficient to a terraced house with the smallest back yard in order to care for my poorly mum. So it is as much salad stuff that we can fit into the tiniest space. We have our names down for several allotments.
@@michellechapman6961 challenging but nice to help your mum and always, amazes me what you can grow in tiny spaces, hope you get your allotment soon 💚🌱💚
Lovely tour of your new beds and seedlings. : ) ❤
Thanks so much! 😊 Can't wait to get planting up!!! 🌱🌱🌱💚💚💚🍌
Wow I got a shout out 😊 glad you found the video and I hope it works.
Haha you did, thanks for the help, look forward to seeing how the Berkley method does!!! ☺️🌱💚
Beautiful and wonderful creations! Very soon you’ll have a bountiful garden. You are doing a great job with the land! 😊
Your videos and accompanying music are relaxing and a joy to watch and listen.
What is your favourite tree to grow on your land?
How high up is your land?
🌷Sam
Thanks very much Pedro, we're really loving it! 💚
Really means a lot that you've noticed our 'new' style and production, it's a lot of work!
We're at 1134 feet by the food forest...
Oh and fav tree has to be our almond as it was the first one to give us nuts albeit 3 last summer!!! But fav plants definitely banana if I can get them to grow BIG 🍌🍌🍌🍌
I've been away and good to see how much you've done in the last 3 weeks. very impressed. I like the explanations too, all very helpful. love the spiral and the banana pit. looking forward to learning more.
Thank you very much! Did you go anywhere nice? And welcomes back 💚🌱🍌🌱💚
I went to Portugal (very nice!) to sort out the accommodation for the D7 visa - waiting for the appointment now...fingers crossed! When is your SEF appointment?

Nice video! I am really enjoying learning about permaculture from you guys. Your garden looks beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
Our pleasure! And thanks, glad your enjoying it, us too! 💚🌱💚🌱
What a great idea on the circle Gardens, I am looking forward to seeing what you grow in there, its starting to look amazing with brilliant ideas, how is Rosie doing? You mentioned her starting some seeds, where is she planting hers? Take care all, sending love 🌷🌷🌷🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤🌿🌿🌿💚💚💚
Thanks so much! Rosie is doing well, she's in Weds Waffles which is sponsored by Disney so she's well excited by that! But she's got her own part in the food forest 💚🌱💚
the bed looks lovely Missy :D well done... congrats on the banana circle, it will work great and all the cutoffs from the bananas itself is just tossed in there to feed the circle...
Thanks so much! 😊 I'm really looking forward to planting up the banana circle!!! Just a, waiting for the last frosts to bugger off 😎
Looking forward to this! 😍❤️
Hope you liked it!? 🌱🌱🌱🌱
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid I didn’t like it! I Loved it! 😍😍😍
Wicked!! Thanks 🌱🌱🌱🌱
Fantastic to see how you are getting on now, really impressive stuff 👍
Aw thanks, it's the best time of year for and in the garden not to wet not to hot! 💚🌿🌱
Love your videos, It makes me smile when I see you have posted another video. Many thanks😊
Aw thanks and do you like our new style? Thanks so much for watching 💚🌱💚
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid love it
Wicked thanks very much 💚🌱💚
Excelente progress guys 👍💯 well done 👏👏
Thank you so much 😀 🌱🌱🌱🌱
Loved the swirly worly path, will look even better once the plants are in. You are all working so hard to get the land into good shape to provide you with yummy food for the year ahead. Once you have a good supply of tomatoes, you might have to ship sneaky boxes of tomatoes to the UK. 🤣🤣
I don't really have the desire to grow my own food, it seems like a good idea but well........(yes I know, soooo lazy). But watching you 2, I am learning stuff and who knows one day I might get organised and have a go myself.
This banana circle is interesting.
Have a good week. Emma
Hi Emma, I was, the same not really grown anything for 30 years and once I started here it gets ya! Loving the challenges now, and yep think the swirly will look amazing once it's planted, look forward to a few months when it's, all planted up 💚🌱🌱🌿
Really hoping the banana circle works in our climate!!!
Muy lindo el jardin🍀👌
Thanks very much 🌱💚👍🍌👌🙂
Awesome job. Looking forward to future videos and the results. Well done, wonderful projects.
Thank you very much! Lots more to come.... Outdoor bath goes in tomorrow! 💚🌱
Thank you very much! Lots more to come.... Outdoor bath goes in tomorrow! 💚🌱
Another informative, interesting, and enjoyable video. Thank you. You both seem so knowledgeable or at least that is how it comes accross x
Thank you so much, and we've both been keen gardeners in the past, and the rest we're learning and researching as we go
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid well your past and quest for knowledge really do you proud x
@@marybates2201 aw, thanks 💚🌱💚

🌱🍌🌱🍌🌱
Loving this series, you’re making great progress 😊
Yay, thank you! Really pleased ourselves, and thanks as always for watching 💚🌱💚🌱💚
you might want to take a look at the earthships designed by Michael Reynolds in Taos New Mexico... you could build an earthship hut... if you use the hut design they are small enough you may not have any trouble with building regulations (check with your local laws)... I love your projects
Thanks googled him and found his youtube and website, lovely designs, somewhat expensive but we'd definitely like to consider an earthship in the future ❤️
Hi wilders, absolutely well done beautiful can't wait to see everything coming to life, I too have been planting up a storm, carrots, basil tomatoes broccoli dill. And few other bits and pieces, I'm hopeful things will grow🤞 all I got last year was buckets of tomatoes! Almeria weather in summer can be cruel😂.
Really excited for the Banana growing too.
Hi Patti, How's your seeds doing? We've had some very late frosts which is, slowing down germination but we've tonnes in! Been raining lots so quietly confident for our summer water supplies! Are you out of frosts now or do you even get them in Almeria!? Depends on where I guess!
Happy planting 😁
Any interesting recommendations?
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid hi beautiful people, nothing happening as yet with my seedlings, the weather has been pretty warm so keeping things watered is our thing, I've an apple tree doing very well, also lemon and orange trees too, and no we never get frost, we live in an area commonly referred to as the desert. But fingers crossed we will all have seedlings soon. Best of luck for less frost and warmth for yours. 💚💚🍀
Always seem to be challenges we've frosts till about now and then the 40 degree summer! I'm jealous of no frosts though! Missy has, a lot of herbs etc up, will get them on camera for next week's video 💚🌱🌿🍅🍆 happy planting!
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid oh lovely I'm looking forward to seeing them. Hopefully frost will clear soon for you. ☘️🙏
Can't believe we just had, another frost!!!! 😩
Great start to the year. Your permaculture food forest is going to be amazing!🌶🍒🥒🍓🍏🍐🍌
Thanks, and yep loving it so far, really taking shape! 🌱💚🌱💚🌱
Have you considered a solar submersível water pump, I use a 12v 10amp 120watt to pump up from my well inexpensive solution or as a back up happy to recommend mine, efficient/clean/quiet/ no fossil fuels etc I watered about 180 trees during last years drought (Algarve)
Hi Howard, yes, an no, but we would definitely be interested for our reservoir/pond to water the food forest from there so yes please be very grateful for the information 🙏💦👍
Our email address is in the description, thanks!!
Do you grow garlic ginger tumic ladies finders . All good for you
We do! Have over wintered a few turmeric and gingers, will probably put them In the banana circle 💚🍌💚🍌🌱
As there good medical use s to full of helf Benefits, love watching your vids. Stay safe.
Cheers mate and we've got lots of herbs and more medicinal plants going in 💚🌱💚🌱
It's all looking very good. I have started planning what we're gonna grow this year that's being in Scotland we will be a good few months behind you. Are you growing comfrey to use as fertiliser? As if I'm not mistaken it has everything plants need to grow but it doesn't smell very nice. Look forward to the next instalment.👍
We love the planning stage too, especially missy! And yep we have some comfrey roots we were given and we've also got seeds in as you rightly say wonderful to use to make fertiliser 💚🌱💚🌱💚
Hi Dom i grow lady finger bananas we are very lucky here in Brisbane Queensland perfect weather for bananas i just stuck a sucker in the ground and away we go after 4 years i am harvesting about 5 bunches per season .Very easy to grow
I'm so jealous!!! But I'm quietly confident I can get fruit here despite, awful growth last year for banana! 🍌🙁
What's your fruit like? is it as sweet as everyone says vs the shop one's!??
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid so much better than the ones you buy at the fruit & vege shops also harvesting pineapples atm they the same as bananas they grow on there own only needs watering once a week when it does not rain ,love your channel and you guys will learn as you progress with your garden cheers !
Thanks so much again! And can't wait to eat our own bananas 😋🌱💚🌱
Will get some pineapple tops in too 🍍🍍🍍🍍
Absolutely love what you’re doing, it’s coming on so fast. We’re currently in Portugal in our van. We’re visiting Braga tomorrow then eventually heading to possibly look at some properties ☺️. Who knows we may be neighbours at some point 😁
Lovely area/city, did you have a look round? So beautiful and good luck on your hunt!! 💚💚💚
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid no we’re currently up in the north going to explore Braga today. Dom could I ask a question, we have our little dog with us do we need to be concerned about leishmaniasis? Is there a tablet or some form of prevention we need from a vet?
Hi, when we were doing beaches with the dogs, we did get a, combined tick and sand fly treatment from the vet. Vets are cheap here so if your concerned just pop to a local vets. Enjoy your travels 💚
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid thank you 🙏🏼 😊
Happy travels 💚🐕🐕🦺🐶

Hi Dom Hi Missy i was just eondering maybe you ought to groe somr nasturtium plants as well as they deter some insect to your veg x
Yep have the marigolds on the go and a load of climbing nasturtium 💚🌱 plus on the nasturtium we'll also sow direct outside in a few weeks, they grew HUGE last year 🌱💮💐🌻
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid thats good as i br9ught some to sow direct on my alloment i am using procetion plastic tunnels to protect them from the frost etc
They're great in salads too 🌱👀
Where is your allotment? How long till your last frost?
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid i didnt know you could eat them lol i live in Shinfield Reading Berkshire 5mins down the road from me i have 8 beds so big plot

Hey guys, we are thinking of moving to Portugal to do similar, what was the process of getting visa’s/citizenship like? We have no idea where to start.
Post brexit it can either be fairly simple to a complete nitemare in our case. If you go back we've multiple videos on how to apply, what you need, although earnings and or passive income requirements have gone up a bit for 2023
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid great il go look for the video’s! Thanks for the reply, ive subbed
@@Edcaseuk1985 pleasure and good luck, it's, definitely worth it we love it here!!!
With the land/property you own please could you let me know if you have to pay any money on a regular basis to the Portuguese Government?
Hi its about 30e a year, that might go up when we have a house built
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid Thank you for answering my question. That will be very interesting to watch if you end up building your own home.
We're building a 2 bedroom cabin with separate toilet and bathroom from may or after August depending how hot it gets!!
@@TheWildlandersOffGrid Thank you for letting me know that your going to build a two bed cabin, i'm looking forward to watching this as it's the sort of property I would like to build as well. Best of luck with the build.
I forgot to respond to your last week video asking if anyone had any ideas on making compost. On UA-cam I like “Dirtpatcheaven” blog. She lives in very cold winters and dry summers in Idaho US. She is very frugal and an avid gardener. She uses rabbits and their manure to make compost and heat her hoop house. I would recommend you read some of her videos about rabbits and composting.
Had a gander very interesting concept to use rabbits in her hotbed! Maybe can experiment here with chicken manure..... 🐔🐔🤔🤔
