- We are routinely told that black people have always lived in Britain. This is misleading. For almost the whole of history they have been greatly outnumbered in this country by other ethnic minorities.

The reason people are unaware of the population of the Chinese people in Victorian times was because they were hard working, disciplined people who spent their time trying to build their businesses, raise their families and get on with life. They didn't spend times whining about their circumstances and committing crimes, they just worked on improving them. Something other cultures seem to be incapable of, even today.
Similar to many of the Indian/Pakistani populations. They emphasise education, good behaviour, College attendance, Business Entrepreneurship etc. They generally don't play the victim and whinge about discrimination. Hence the high number of professional Business owners, GPS, Hospital Doctors, Accountants, Lawyers etc. from their Community. A society that supposedly is anti non white doesn't seem to have harmed them. In fact they have flourished in the U.K. Why haven't the whinging Afro Caribbean ?

My Nan was born up in Dulwich 1903 and the only ethnic minority I ever heard her mention was the Chinese and I think most of that came from her Mother who grew up in the Eastend.

Perhaps the fictitious numbers of blacks recorded have included music hall acts akin to The black and white minstrels and Al Jolson.
We were friends with our Chinese restaurant they invited us for New year celebrations with them.
Thousands of Chinese seamen were recruited to help with the Atlantic convoys which helped supply Britain with food and military supplies. After the war, most were summarily deported without any chance of legal representation. Many families lost their breadwinner overnight and wives thought they had been abandoned. The British government has never acknowledged this gross injustice unlike Windrush. Seems fine to do it to the. Chinese.

What i have noticed over myliftime is that i have never heard a bad word spoken of the chinese people and the communities they live in. Only good things and how polite they are. I would happily walk around china town in even at nightime in Manchester and i would feel safe there. As for some of of our other large ethnic areas i wouldn't be to keen to walk around even in daylight and that goes for most of the peolple i know.

Yup I knew loads of Cantonese (as from Hong Kong) from working in the Casino's I had lots of BBC friends (British Born Chinese) with full on Manchester accents and would get free drinks in Raymond and Steven Chan's bars and clubs lol, then go and party at plush apartments in Town.

I was 11 years old before I saw a black person in real life and that was on a trip to London there were no black people anywhere near where I lived.

I knew of one black guy and one Asian in school in the early/mid seventies. There may have been more but nothing like you see now. In fact where I live in reading many of the schools have more black and Asians than white kids!
@Tadpole - similar for me, until I was 11 and went to secondary school. I grew up in a village in southern England. I remember when I was 11 in the first year at my Grammar School in a nearby town, a large black kid, everyone knew to be wary of because he was rather fond of randomly being violent and thought it funny, beating up a boy in the year above us to the point where he put him in hospital for some months. He apparently was kicking him, punching on the ground, relentlessly until someone got a teacher who intervened and probably saved the kids life. The black kid was suspended for some months I remember, but came back. He was basically a psychopath and everyone knew it. He liked me though for some reason and never bothered me. My first experience of diversity - coming from an all white school in a tranquil village.
The first black person I ever met was in the mid 70's, he was a similar age to me 9 or 10 years old. I believe he was adopted but cannot be sure of that, never saw his parents, or any black adults for that matter, where we lived. Anyway, he was a great lad that I got on well with, I never saw any prejudice towards him, not that I would have recognised prejudice at that age.

i was in my last year of school when we moved to a city and i met for the first time Pakistani, we had a Chinese family already in our town ,and loved they were, bringing their lovely daughters and food to the wilds of the uk. still no blacks till i went to London to see family. that would be mid 80s. to be honest i have seen more Africans driving and walking about last year than i have in the last ten years . seems covid was used for many nefarious things.
The 1937 survey of British seamen recorded about a hundred West Indian sailors resident in the UK, mostly in London docklands. (I believe the late lamented Kenny Lynch may have been a child of one of them). I would guess seamen were the most likely source of immigration from the West Indies before WWII. At that time, there were 584 West Indian sailors in total recorded aboard British registered ships.
My mother was born in 1945 south London and witnessed seeing a black person around the mid 60s when they started coming in large numbers.
Kenny Lynch is someone I fondly recall. An all round entertainer.

@@jonmould2946 there were lots of black people in south London at that time mainly in Brixton and Camberwell and more in Notting Hill, and in 1961 there was a black girl in my school, just off the Old Kent road but she was constantly being called names and left after one year, the head teacher even called all the kids together in the assembly hall' after sending the girl home and told them the abuse it had to stop

I was born and bred in the East End poplar which is a stones throw from Limehouse I was born in 1967 and I remember the Chinese community in Limehouse and poplar there gone now but what I remember the most was they were a peaceful people minded there own business caused no trouble too anybody and most importantly they sold fantastic food..lol I really miss the old London.

Just taking an analytical approach to this. 15,000 is a substantial population. A distinctive ethnic group like that will not die out or be fully amalgamated with the indigenous population in just 200 years. Photographs from London have been around since the 1840’s, they would reflect the ethnic demographics as a contemporary source.
Do you think if there were 15000 black people in the 1700's the population would be considerably higher than it is now and would they perhaps be more "integrated" than they are now?
Yes. Even 1950s Britain was largely homogenous. Watching film reels of that time can be quite depressing .

While waiting for an on-the-day passport at Liverpool, I decided to kill a bit of time by visiting the local history museum on the waterfront nearby.
Well worth a visit, but in relation to this topic, I was astounded by how long a sizeable Chinese community had been established there - way back into Victorian times.
During Victorian and Edwardian England the new fad was photography and cine films . Thousands of photos still exist today , documenting the poor and yet hardly a black person is to be seen in any street scenes.
Even comparatively recent YT videos of London & major cities in the 30s 40s & 50s show virtually no ethnic minorities & you can be sure that photographers would be keen to notice & photograph anything out of the ordinary.

Good video Simon. I think there were more Chinese than you say. I remember my White British Aunt saying her school friend married a Lime House Chinaman. Several years ago I came across a kitchen fitter who said one of his grand parents was a Chinaman from Lime House, because he had a Chinese surname. There were many hundreds of Chinese seamen that stayed in the dock area sometimes for years at a tine. Other East End dockers also mention many Lascars living in the dock area who came from South East Asia, East Africa and the Philippines, who worked mainly as stokers on the steam ships.
Out of interest when I first started school in what is now the London Borough of Newham the person sitting next to me was a young lad who had just come across from Trinidad, he was the only person of African origin in the school. He was my first school mate and a year later he returned to the Caribbean as his parents said it was too cold in England. Out of interest there was one Asian girl in the class above and she was the only Asian in the school. If you go pass the same school playground now, nearly every pupil is either of Asian or Afro Caribbean descent and what Europeans there are, they appear to be Eastern European.
Same in Liverpool. Its had a Chinese community since about 1850, ex sailors I believe. Pretty decent bunch. They cornered the fish and chip business. Best chippies in the world
@@jazztheglass6139 are you aware under the Government’s ethnic classification code, there is no classification code for those of dual white British Chinese heritage. Yet there are classifications for White British Caribbean, White British African and White British Asian. So that people of White British Chinese heritage either have to put mixed other, or White British or Chinese. Most of these people I know just put themselves down as White British. Obviously the Government do not think they warrant a classification of their own.

As we all know when it comes to race politics, the truth doesn't matter, just the outcome.
Due to poverty and sickness, many hundreds of children ended up living in orphanages, boy's homes and joining our armed forces during late Victorian times. In north Kent there were several and I'm sure there were many others dotted around London, as the majority of the children came from there. I have to assume no black families were affluent. So why are there no photographs of black orphans from that period? I've seen plenty and never spotted one black face amongst the thousand of children shown in them.

We never saw any blacks or Asians in my home town of Lowestoft. And that was in the 60s/70s. It was 100% pure and has been for centuries. Lets pray it stays this way.
That fact that people move to another country and refuse to integrate, instead create areas where only they can live is the problem. They should've been kicked out right away.
There was just one black kid at my primary school in 1949, called Mitch and we were best mates for a couple of months,, then none at the next school and none at the grammar.
In the mid 1960s my boy's secondary school of 1200 pupils had just one black boy. He was the fastest runner in the school.
It's one of life's mysteries that the Edwardians didn't employ them as actors for every single pictorial advert in all of the newspapers!

Indeed. You can find a clip of James Baldwin being interviewed on Thames TV in 1987 recalling his visits to London from the early 1950s. He says very plainly that there were no blacks in London in 1952 to speak of -- in England for that matter -- they started coming from around 1955.

I use to love it when a Dickens novel ventured into the Limehouse district. I found the squalid side of Victorian England just fascinating. Even the opium dens, like in his unfinished work _The Mystery of Edwin Drood._

My grandfather had a photo of a street party in Bexley (where he lived) that was taken in the 1930's. There were over 150 people in that photo, aged 9 months to 99 years. All (every single one) was white.

or African (In the 70's first generation). There must be tens of thousands of black folks in this country who can trace there linage
back to the Victorian era and beyond. The evidence will be easy to find: Church records, marriages, births and deaths and so on.
Local newspaper cuttings always a good source of folk history too.

I live in Bolton and EVERYBODY MY AGE (I’m 132 next birthday) knows that Bolton, at least, was manufactured in 1779 in central Africa by Chinese descendants of the rogue emperor (the one always in films). Huge barges were used to transport all the bits and pieces over a period of years and white slaves (who were grateful of any food and work) from what is now Wigan built the town.

In the mid-18C Covent Garden has a Black community and they were so well-known that people travelled to look at them. They became known as The Blackbirds of Covent Garden, by the way. They did not last long as most married into the wider White population and within a generation or so they had vanished.

In the 1960s in Coventry there were schools with nothing but black and Asian kids. Other schools had none. Clearly major segregation existed (by choice, not forced).
I think photos from London in that era are concrete evidence of who lived there in the 19th century.

My old mum was born in islington London in 1919, when she was a child growing up, she used to tell us, a black person was not often seen in the twentys. the kids would say first luck if thay saw one, a bit like a black cat.

I read at the Lichfield barracks Staffs regiment museum, Chinese dug trenches in WW1 for Britain. Previously they probably dug railway cuttings or canals. I assume they probably came from Hong Kong. How many did laundry on Navy ships. Even a small enclave of Japanese in Tyneside, stayed to learn ship building and settled.
In every British census since 1841 people have been asked to state their place of birth and nationality
if thousands of black people lived in Britain, where are they buried, where did the records of these deaths go?
in my hometown there is a high walled Jewish graveyard with a few gravestones from around 1850.
The UK census returns from 1841 through to 1921 provide solid evidence of the origins and status of the population at 10 year intervals, based on Place of Birth. Ok, early on some may have lied about that and their age, as possibly it was unknown, or for other ‘social’ reasons. It would be very easy to broadly determine the ‘ethnic’ background of the population changes over that period. Maybe this analysis has been done, so if so where to find it? Or perhaps what it reveals doesn’t ‘accord’ with today’s fashionable narrative?

Not many of us Chinese seen reading the news in TV shows or programs and none not one in woke coronation Street. Such a shame as we would like to be represented as contributing to the culture and history of the UK. 🇬🇧🙏🌹
The proliferation of Black actors in British TV shows probably reflects successful lobbying by BAFA the Black Association for the Arts, and the fact that there are 10 Black theatre companies in the UK where budding black actors can develop their craft. It is probably also easier to get funding for productions that have a number of black actors in them. Finally; try being an Asian or a Chinese kid and telling your parents you want to be an out of work actor and not the doctor or lawyer they plan for you to be. They will probably apply a persuasive argument to your backside.
A quick look at the records of WW1 show a very, very small number of black men in the Army. Hnce the veneration for Walter Tull, who won the MC and was a black Officer - he was a very rare example indeed.

Nothing more jarring than seeing a period drama /film with black characters when knowing full well they weren't here at the time .Utterly spoils the authenticity . I switch off and certainly would not pay to see a film showing such historical deceit .
I can tell your listeners that as a person born in Dublin in 1962 I could go all week , no for months without seeing a black person at all. In fact it would have been quite a novelty to see anybody except other Irish people.

Seems the huge amounts of black British history only really takes off after the 1950s. Pretty much everything prior to that is speculation, embellishment or just down right lies. From 125AD to 1948, it only lists 15 entries but post that, 18 entries. So for 1,823 years; virtually nothing (and half of those claims are incredibly dubious with no real evidence) yet after 1948, lots happened. Sort of contradicts the idea that Britain has always had large numbers of blacks living here and coincidentally coincides with the arrival of Windrush.
I'm sure your logic is able to completely explain all of this though.
Watched some videos of swinging 1960's London. In each scene it was the same two black people being re-used. First in foreground then in mid ground, background and so on. In 1983 London the only black people I saw were the cleaner in the hotel and a waiter in a nearby restaurant. In a hotel just on London outskirts only 20 years ago all staff were white English except for a Turkish chef.

Among other things these fictions about there being American style black populations in England before the 1950s are an insult to black people because it misrepresents their heritage.

Yes a total fallacy that black people lived in London in Victorian times, the only exception is that in Liverpool there was a black population back in the Victorian days,. not sure how big it was, the city of Liverpool was an entry point for trade during the days of empire and attracted many nationalities to these shores, as we moved to more modern times during the fifties and sixties 'Black gangsters became rich exploiting the drugs market and one man who lived in one of the poorest parts of Liverpool drove around in a Rolls Royce and the younger black generation looked up to him and saw him as a role model, he was able to import a huge amount of drugs through the Port, which in those days was much easier to do!
this nameless man became a well known community leader in Liverpool but eventually served a very long time in prison for drug dealing and other offences!

I expect that England has some pretty reliable birth, marriage and death records going a long way back.

Descendants of late 19th or early 20th century black people would certainly feature with many thousands able to trace their ancestors. Unless most had no children we can only conclude the obvious. Casting black actors in unlikely roles reflects the diversity of the profession, with very few of Chinese origin. This poses a problem, audiences like period drama and this is what we get from inclusive casting.
My understanding is that prior to the 1950s the black population in Britain was transient and composed of itinerant sailors (so all men) who sort of got stuck here and were regarded as being charity cases. It was taken up as a progressive cause to raise money to send them back home. But I'm not a historian.

I came across this book title on Twitter - Out Of Africa: How "Afrocentrism" Became An Excuse To Teach Myth As History. It's about how the nonsense that everything and everyone of note in history was of black African origin was being taught in US schools and colleges as actual facts. We know that what happens in the US crosses the Atlantic to the UK. The book was published in 1997!! Well before BLM and CRT were even known about outside academia. That was 25 years ago, so 8 cohorts of college students have gone through 3 years of higher education and grown up believing this idiocy.
