"The Crown" IS THE FUCKING FAMILY, and not merely the current sovereign. Hell, half of Seasons One and Two were dominated by Margaret and Philip. And Season Five is set during a period in which the breakup of Charles and Diana's marriage had dominated the news. If the current king cannot deal with this, fuck him.

I think it’s a pretty natural transition as the show is always focused on the Crown as an entity. And exploring Charles is an inherent part of that. Which I think the show really leans into in season 6.

I never once bought Detective Mcnulty as Prince Charles. Never bought the new Prince Phillip either, your observations about Phillip's mannerisms and cadence between Matt and Tobias evolving, only to be cut out entirely in S5, is entirely true. DIana and Elizabeth's casting has never been closer to reality, and yet those actors are given absolute dross to work with. I could see the issues of constant thematic repetition coming in S4, and it came out in spades in S5. What they chose to ignore was fascinating, and what they chose to show us was terribly boring.

I was actually bummed out that the fire at Windsor wasn't more prominent in season 5. It was just one part of one episode but historically it had a lot more go on. Prince Andrew actually aided in the rescue of priceless items even as the fire blazed, Prince Phillip oversaw the restoration and the decision to pay for it by opening Buckingham Palace up for tours. But the show just had the Queen there when much of the Royal family was. It would have been a good opportunity to force them all to set aside whatever disputes or friction they had even if only temporarily as they all would be effected by the event.

I guarantee that if you approached them and asked, "What were The Troubles," most Americans would have no idea or could only say a few bare bone facts. I was hoping, especially after they showed Dickey's death via the IRA, that they'd at least have an episode covering it. The routes they took in this season are perplexing indeed. I really didn't need a grisly reenactment of what happened to the Romanovs.

I felt "The Crown" is taking the "Game of Thrones" route. Great show getting wasted in last 2 seasons, due to either the showrunners trying too hard to make fans happy (and they fail) or rushing the episodes to made them a collection of highlights (empty inside). Disappointed by season 5, with a big miscast (Dominic West is a good actor but I couldn't believe him for a second as Prince Charles) and a constant sensation of decadence for this story. Let's see how it goes the season 6

I didn’t think season 5 was the best season ( not by a long shot) but I still really enjoyed it. One of my favorite parts was actually the scenes with Prince Philip and his God son’s wife where he’s teaching her how to drive a carriage and just spending time with her and showing her kindness while she is going through the loss of her daughter. I thought that was very heartfelt. Your criticisms are definitely still valid though. A lot was missing from this season.

There were a couple of poor casting decisions in S05. For Philip we got a crotchety old man but he wasn't our crotchety old man which Matt and Tobias had been built up so well . For Charles we didn't get the guy who never got picked in a game of ball, we got someone who was in the top half amongst a group of men. Add to that the rather depressing storylines and it wasn't much fun to watch. True watching the developing train wreck can be riveting but I personally don't want to revisit such a tragedy. It feels like everyone is playing their parts in a play, rigidly sticking to their historical roles without going deeper.

Such smart analysis! This whole video I kept thinking "oh, THAT's why I enjoyed watching that part." Except, and I hope I'm not spoiling you here, there was zero reference to the Good Friday Agreement in the final season. There was a storyline about 9/11 though, and the UK's subsequent involvement in the US invasion of Iraq. It's hard not to wonder whether that creative decision was on some level about the creators wanting to show the UK as coerced into a boondoggle by a much stronger ally. Any honest reflection about Ireland sure would've made it harder to get away with framing the UK as somehow just a weak little guy trying its best in a bully's shadow.

Personally, i sort of disagree to the conclusion parts in terms of the existence of the show and its purpose. I know that the British Empire and its evil colonial past and present upholdings have destroyed lives and cultures across the globe for hundreds of years. And that the monarchy very much to many represents not only that, but the stark sense of global inequality due to race and money. However I came, and so did everyone else i assume when the show was first announced, to watch about the royals themselves. Its sad so many terrible things happened but they are supposed to be background and glimpses in the time of the reign of Elizabeth as the show is about her and her family and their struggles, views, terrible choices and etc. On a more agreeable note, I was also rather let down by the 5th season because I just felt that they could have filled it up a lot more, and not relied so heavily on sensationalism. For instance, I thought the bland way Diana interacted with her sons (especially Harry who she doted on openly) was a great disservice to her character and I felt that was because they spent way too much time humanizing Charles and Camilla. Not saying those two didnt deserve a more nuanced look (im a staunch supporter of it) but it seems as if they couldnt get a good balance and that its real crucial in those years.

I think that season 5 was not as well received as previous seasons was because most of people of a certain age remember the events as they happened. Not many people are still alive who saw Queen Elizabeth II accede to the throne, but many of us remember the wedding of Charles and Diana and the disaster that followed. We remember Diana's Panorama interview and we saw how she tried to destroy Charles. To me, this was the most fascinating season of all.

Except for season 5's "Mou Mou" episode, it seems the show has now fallen under Diana's spell and I'm not really looking forward to season 6. I don't understand why they dragged season 5 storyline so much, I kept waiting for events to unravel and the plot to move on and I understood too late how Diana drama addicted it had become, turning into a poor follow-up to Stephen Frears's The Queen.

Season 5 reflects the internal upset of the firm that followed Diana's arrival extremely well, and with far more subtlety than The Crown usually employs. If building in that undercurrent of unbalance was intentional, it's impressive af and makes the overall diminished quality of the season as a whole when held up against s1-4 a bit more forgivable; if it was not intentional, it's a happy accident in a way, but then what is their excuse for the "meh" that is s5?

  • @Girl2TheCity

For the entire show to be about The Crown I am still baffled why the rest of Elizabeth children are nearly non existent.
Why season five should have been about
    Charles
    Andrew
    Anne
In that order and the conflict of new ideas versus old traditions. The beginning of the impact of the entertainment industry impacting the image of the royals and the UK to the world 🌎
It was just too lacking for me, and felt like a watt pad season of
    Meet Charles …
And forgive Camilla because she isn’t going anywhere 🤣🤣🤣

Thoughts on The Hero’s Journey: I’m something of a novelist. My debut novel will be published next year by Outcast Press. I started it out of spite really (I had only written poetry or short stories in the past) after being brutally rejected by another writer who loved The Hero’s Journey and was reading a book called The Heroine’s Journey (ironically, he doesn’t seem to treat women very well.) I didn’t use The Hero’s Journey in my process; it’s true enough that stories have protagonists and POVs, I suppose. Granted, I prefer to write transgressive fiction which means breaking the rules. To me, plot is far less important than characters and plot only exists to support characters. My writing advice would be to write your obsessions and your passions in lightning on the page.

Only 1 issue with this review, and it's to do with the factual vs fictional representation in The Crown of The Crown. In Constitutional Law, there is the Monarch and The Crown. The Queen as a constitutional monarch, has no executive power in government. She doesn't decide policy, especially foreign policy. That is the responsibility of the party in the House of Commons that has the majority of sitting MPs. She meets with the Leader of that Party who is by custom appointed Prime Minister weekly and is further guided by the Privy Council. They have the executive power in law as The Crown. So, Elizabeth and now her son Charles, are front men for a powerful establishment, and that very real power is symbolically mediated by the person of the Monarch. They are it's public face and embodiment of it. So, the dirty dealings of empire, the economic colonisation and geopolitical shenanigans are the gift of the politicians. The Monarch is directed where to go, and who to see on official business by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The only episode I distinctively remember is the one about the Romanovs. I'm sick and tired of watching Charles and Diana have the same argument again and again. It's realistic, yes, but also bad television. I loved The Crown because it was part docu series, part soap drama. This season forgot the history and focused solely on a very open and shut divorce that wouldn't have been very interesting (even in real life) if it weren't for the sole fact that they are royals.

Really? What was your issue with Elizabeth Debicki? I felt like she really shined. Also Mohammad Al Fayed seemed very well cast.

Why do you Americans take this TV show so seriously? It is pure fiction. Is it that you regret 1776 and all that?
You have never had a President who commanded such worldwide devotion and admiration as the late Queen Elizabeth 11.

I'm in the middle of Season 5 and I find your criticisms to be . . . "irrelevant". Ever since Dame Judi Dench opened her damn mouth, people have been on a tear to bash Season 5 and especially its focus on Charles and Diana. Perhaps Seasons 1 and 2 were so popular because they didn't focus on the controversy of Charles and Diana. You really disappointed me.

take it easy! I didn’t bash season 5 because of what Judi Dench said - in fact I criticized her - but either way no need to be rude !

@@jrrtalkin It's not just Judi Dench. Once, I tried to re-watch Seasons One, Two and Three and realized I didn't find all of the episodes that interesting. Only half of each season has been interesting to me. This has been the case for me in regard to "The Crown" since the beginning. But I feel the series is still good overall for me to continue watching.
