I've just downloaded this, looked at it, and thought there is NO way I'll ever understand it. This tutorial has explained everything really well!! Thank you!
That's the spirit! We'll keep recording and publishing more videos this year. We know the learning curve is a bit steep at the beginning, and this video help a lot to master it faster :)
I got the app only because of this excellent tutorial. Without this tutorial it would be extremely difficult to use the app. Keep up the good work guys!!!
Yes totally agree finally a company standing by there product as it’s the best I’ve seen. And the more talking is great as it covers so much. Don’t shorten them as better than buying a book to get maybe not as good explained version. Everyone in to much of a rush these days. Lol. 👍🇦🇺📸🎞
2 years after this video and I'm on the app and most of it has made sense to follow along. Extremely helpful app, I'm excited to use it more accurately and completely now.
Great tutorial, until you have to present something as complex as this yourself, you don’t really appreciate how much effort went into this tutorial. Fantastic, methodical, logical explanation. Well presented and easy to understand. This is my go to video..... the app itself has loads of features, but loving the app so much. Can’t wait until travel in not restricted anymore. Muchas Garcia’s PhotoPills equipo.
Never mind the comments about being wordy........you explain this topic very well and for someone that only downloaded this topic yesterday and never did any astro photography, you have provided a great tool, the knowledge and inspiration to get out and do so, loving the app and already seeing better results in my photography habits because of it. thank you very much
Thanks a lot for your words Kelvin! :) Have you taking a look this this article too? Maybe you find it useful: www.photopills.com/articles/how-shoot-truly-contagious-milky-way-pictures
OMG - I can't believe the power of this app. Ordering for my iPad today. To the developers of this app, thank you for all the work that went into making this. Will be an interesting learning curve to truly figure out all the things it can do.
+Bill B Thank you Bill! Yes, the Planner tool has a learning curve, but besides this video you'll find 11 more in the Academy section of our website and step-by-step tutorials :) www.photopills.com/academy And if you have any question, don't hesitate to send us an email to info@photopills.com :)
+PhotoPills I've downloaded it now and started to play with it. Crazy Cool !!! I'm going to find this app soooo useful for photography. I've already sent a link to your website to my friends interested in photography. Thanks Again.
+Bill B Thank YOU! And you can also enter in our PhotoPiller of the Year competition whenever you want ;) www.photopills.com/blog/rewarding-you-more-5000-annually-your-most-creative-photos
Great presentation. If you're new to PhotoPills it's a great way to get into the detail of what the app can do. Plans in progress; I can't wait for the Milky Way season to arrive!
I love PhotoPills! The app is so -o-o helpful in planning your shots! This Milky Way tutorial is planned logically and sequentially in order for users to be able to use PhotoPills with the least effort to succeed with our shots. Thank you so much for providing all the assistance you do.
I love this app! You helped me a lot! I love galaxy, sky tumblr photos and this is amazing. It took me 2 days to find a place to shoot in my holiday but when i found it, i was the happiest. ✌💜
Bravo! Bravo! I stand and applaud!! Yes please make more video's like this! I have been using this app for a year and this will help me explain to others how it is used. Need to mention the Iphone and Ipad focal mm is 35mm is what you are viewing in Night AR mode so using a 14mm lens on a full frame you will get more in the frame. I now understand how to setup for those great panoramic shots in February and March with the MW arch low on the horizon. The Ipad app is way better to see everything (power last longer also), tap the moon and sun and get the moon and MW and watch as the moon sets in the west while the MW rises in the SE for that moon lit foreground with the MW in the sky also. Also this app has all the photo tools you will ever need in the field. Cheers also, Ed
+Echo Auxgen Hi Ed!! Yes, you're right. The Night AR uses the iPhone camera, so it's like using a 35mm. So, if you use a wider focal length, more Milky Way arch will fit in your frame :)
Just bought the app. Can't wait to plan my first milky way shot. I can't even quantify how much work this app will save me, but I can tell you I would probably quit trying if I had to do all this work the old fashioned way. Thanks for making it so easy!
+GoodLifeXplorers Be careful, night photography is addictive hehe Here's an article we wrote some months ago that maybe will help you to shoot the Milky Way ;) www.photopills.com/articles/how-shoot-truly-contagious-milky-way-pictures
+PhotoPills I will be careful. Don't want to start having a sleep deficit from staying up all night several times a monh. Lol I've read the article, that is what made me interested in the app. Very in depth and and great information. I didn't know where to start until another photographer sent me your link. Let's see what happens!
Amazing app... Best way to know what my iPhone is capable of while map size on 5/SE screen is a bit small. Not easy to use at first but i have been watching your tutorials and now it is pretty easy. Still need to find out the use of the hidden buttons (first one is GPS ok but others ??). Was focused on Sun and Moon pictures but after watching this video i will study possible Milky Way ones... Congrats to the team !
Just found the guide after my comment sorry ! Was delighted when i first press the 'Expand Map' pin button :-) while the "Block map buttons" is no longer there... **Request**: please add one button to enable/disable the Obstacles’ pin - faster than sliding on the top.
This is exactly the video I have been looking for. Feeling very inspired to try this out using the planner properly this time! I’ve been using it for years just guessing where the shot might be… this is a game changer!
What a fantastic app. I got this on my iphone and I have been playing with it for a while. Amazing! Photographing Milky way is soooo easy with this app in your hand! I can't wait to head out this spring and summer and click some nice Milky way shots!! Thanks for creating a life saving app for astrophotographers!
Thanks for the tutorial. By repeating view different scenarios, it helps understanding how to use the app effectively. I can't believe how easy to use and very effective to predict the milky way. Thank you again for your great tutorial.
I just took my first Milky Way photos from Lassen National Park and Yosemite's Glacier Point in July 2016. Both turned out great! If I would have had your app at the time it would have made the task much more predictable. I can see that PhotoPils will be a valuable tool in my bag from now on. Thanks for the awesome video and app.
Just purchased the app based on this video. I really like how you have taken the time to explain step-by-step how to plan and compose your shot. Thank you so much! Steve
Wow fantastic this is going to expand my shooting so much. Being ex soldier. With ptsd. Being able to plan and recon then prepare is so beneficial for me and will. Allow me to be much more likely to go and shoot so many different things or even positions with the Milky Way. The whole program is fantastic. I just sent the address of your site to some friends to get hold of this app. Please keep up the great expansion and added videos as you can. As I hope to be using this for many yrs to come. I’m not sure if there is a version that I could use on my MacBook Pro to revise my plans and run information that would be great as well so I can while planning link to what I have recorded from a spot or any say pictures of the AR to reinforce what my goal is??? As you have really put so Much great information I’m sure with my new iPhone coming the XAR it will run even smoother and maybe connect later to my MacBook Pro. As I’m not sure if it’s. Been out on my iPad as well. Or is it only the phone. Just bigger screen so easier as I get older lol. But also while on site be great for AR on the 12.9 screen. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 ohh I gather I’ll be looking North. As we are Southern Hemisphere??? 👍👍📸🎞
PhotoPills works on the iPad too :) Just search PhotoPills in the App Store in your iPad and you'll find it. And, as you already bought PhotoPills for your iPhone, if you use the same iTunes account on your iPad you won't need to buy the app again. At the moment we don't have a desktop version, it's in the roadmap thought, but we're a really small team and we don't know when we'll be able to build it.
This is freaking amazing!! Building house in NC USA with west view. Used this and will get amàzing long range shots with MW above the mountain range. Assume a composite and it will be fantastic. Need star tracker (which was or discussed or expected) but small investment to get shot. This app is unbelievable help in planning. You are a genius!
Thank you PhotoPills for the videos and a fantastic app. This one is a favourite and I'm looking forward to the night when I finally capture my first Milky Way photo, especially now I know where it's going to be :)Thanks Guys!
+tupelokid11 Thank you! Looking forward to seeing your shots in our PhotoPiller of the Year contest :) www.photopills.com/blog/rewarding-you-more-5000-annually-your-most-creative-photos
I've been really impressed with Sun Scout for the AR views for locating the sun's position but PhotoPills is a totally mind-blowing app. You guys are geniuses! This has got to be one of the best instructive videos explaining what is quite a tricky subject. Nice job! I get across to Mallorca every year to shoot a few weddings but haven't made it across to Menorca. One day!
Thanks a lot Graham for your kind words. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have any question about how to use the app or if you ever come to Menorca :)
I haven't started any astrophotography yet, going through the pdf, milky-en. I have the app for planning milky way images but didn't know how to use it until now, wow!!! its amazing.
I just bought and installed PhotoPills, so far I've checked the DOF feature, and it is way better than the app I've been using. My 7DMRKII is on the very extensive list of cameras, and I find this tool very easy to use. I will be getting into the planner next, as I think it is the most powerful feature of the app. The app is world class, hope you guys sell millions of copies.
This app is great. I bought it twice: once for my ipad and once for my galaxy s7. Too bad I waited a month or so to actually watch this tutorial... I didn't know to double tap timeline to go to the current day, or tap the moon icon repeatedly to go to the next new moon. Perfect compliment to my new nikon d5500.
this is an incredible product! Wonder when you are shooting so close to the ocean, do you take the tides in to account. Would hate to be all set up and have the tide come in!! Great tutorial!! Hopefully we can all get back out and travel safely to new locations again, soon!! Stay safe and thanks!
Great Video, easy to understand and enjoyed how you presented finding different compositions. Just purchased the app and tomorrow will plan my shot for the "super moon" on monday. Cheers.
Guys this is absolutely super explanation video for how to shot Milky Way with your amazing application. Thanks for it. Really appreciate it. Please make more videos like this :-) Cheers Peter
truly amazing what uz have created!!! I'm sold on this as my go to app for everything now!! off to the download shop!!!! nice vid and great display of what we can achieve with it, top marks to ya!!!
One of my biggest dreams in photography is to find and shoot Milky Way) After this great tutorial I got the app and now in the planning) Hope to get it still in July.Unf.Moscow has lots of light pollutions and probably I need to be 150km away... I've heard something about exposure to the right technology in LR to get a shot in place with big pollution...
Hi Dmitri! For the latitude of Moscow you'll have to wait until September to be able to capture the Milky Way. During summer you always have too much residual light from the light that dims the Milky Way. Too many hours of light hehe. This article will help you to capture the Milky Way: www.photopills.com/articles/how-shoot-truly-contagious-milky-way-pictures And this one will give you some tips to shoot it in light-polluted skies: www.justinngphoto.com/2014/05/16/how-i-photograph-the-milky-way-from-light-polluted-skies-of-singapore/ Hope it helps! :)
Great job and excellent explanation! Unfortunately there's no an Android version yet, but I subscribed right now and I'll waiting for it! Thanks a lot!
I'm just getting into astrophotography. Looks that Photo Pills is the perfect tool for it. Waiting desperatly for the Android version. My holidays are in August and I plan star trails in the Alps.
Respect ! This is by far, the best tutorial Ive ever seen. Not to mention that it also explains your product in the best ever wayYou come my way or I come your way, Ill buy you a beer 👍

I got this app 2 years ago because I wanted to shoot the Milky Way and I discovered the most powerful app for photographers!! I has soooo many things in there that I don't know if I'll able to experiment with all of them. But that's good new right?!!! Also, the tutorials are very very helpful and they have the correct pace and they go step-by-step. All in all I recommend this app to all the photographers as it is a great tool!! And my question to the Photo Pills team: Do you have any astronomers in your team? haha
I sincerely apologize. I’ve since dived-in and found the app to be extremely useful, even inspirational. My initial difficulty with it stemmed from exactly what you had warned about: trying to do too much, too fast. Once you break it down into a series of discreet steps and actions it becomes much clearer how to achieve the results you’re looking for. I still have much to learn, but now consider it an incredible bargain and have enthusiastically recommended it to fellow shooters. Hope that makes up for my earlier intemperate comments. 😊
Thank you for these videos! I was trying to use PhotoPills to check locations in northern Scotland during the milky way season and the milky way panel is showing "always invisible" no matter what the day or time was (I used the slider to check from Feb to Oct). I even checked locations where I've seen photos of the galactic core and still no change. Am I doing something wrong or is the core actually never ever visible from certain locations and all those photos are fake composites?
This is because it's a pretty hight latitude. And it's not getting dark enough (nighttime). But if you get the Astronomical Twilight, you might get the Milky Way too. Use the Milky Way representation on the map to plan you shots (and the times on the time bar).
Thank you for such a great tutorial! I bought PhotoPils (ver1.6.3) after I saw this tutorial but I think I'm doing something wrong. If I tap in the first Milky Way panel (Visibility GC) I can not exclude moon and sun information. I have just two states OR only moon & sun OR moon & sun info plus milky way but not only milky way alone like in your tutorial at 10:04. Can you imagine what I'm doing wrong? Thank you again!
Yes, we changed that in an update. People hide the sun/moon info with that button by mistake and they didn't know how to enable it again. So now it only acts on the Milky Way. If you want to hide the sun/moon, you can use the Sun/Moon panel (3rd top page). Or even easier, tap the "Map Settings" button, the one at the right side of the (+) button on the map, and the tap the eye icon of the layers you'd like to enable/disable.
Hey, first off - the work that must have gone into this app is amazing! When you are doing the AR view, does it use your GPS position, or the shooting pin position for the calculations?
Loved this video. Thanks. I've been a PhotoPills user / fan for years. Quick question, do I need a new moon if the moon has not yet risen when I plan to shoot? Is it still dark enough, or would a full moon that is about to rise still add light to the sky?
Hi John! I remember you for the emails we exchanged regarding Full Moon planning and alignments :) Any night with new moon or the moon under the horizon it's great for Milky Way photography. You can also use the moon when rising/setting to light your foreground :) We show this blue "power" bar as a reminded of the moon phase. But, of course, the moon can be at 45% phase but under the horizon, and that means it won't interfere with your shooting. Cheers! Germán The Developer
PhotoPills Hi German - is that you in the video? Silly follow up question. I understand the moonlight issues discussed here. Light pollution from big cities also an issue, but how about if I'm out in the country where it's very dark, but there is a campfire or other lights nearby? Will they affect my image of the sky/stars?
No, that's Rafa. I was behind the camera :) Yes, it can affect your exposure, because to shoot the Milky Way you have to push up the ISO to 1250, 3200, 6400... So if you have a campfire nearby you'll have to control the highlights.
Thank you for the great tutorial! I have owned PhotoPills for a while now but was a little intimidated by it. I am not after watching this. In order to have the GPS function do you need to have data roaming on? (If you go from one country to another you often get large phone bills if you leave data roaming turned on.) Thank you.
Hi Rich! No, PhotoPills works offline. All calculations (sun/moon paths, milky way position, calculators...) are done locally in the iPhone/iPad, also the Augmented Reality views. You'll only need Internet connection to load the maps, but you can preload them by panning and zooming the area you know you'll need. iOS will re-use them when offline.
Hey guys! Does this cover all aspects over the globe? I live in Far North Australia, along the East Coast and was hoping to get some nice shots. Very excited to watch this tutorial and check out the app! Cheers!
+cammo253 Oh yes! It works all around the globe. Just can take a look at Mark Gee's work (from Australia, but living in New Zealand), he's one of our users :) theartofnight.com/2014/06/the-art-of-astrophotography-tutorial/

Thanks a lot Graham for your kind words. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have any question about how to use the app or if you ever come to Menorca :)
Graham try going from Guatemala to Guatapeor, it is unreal.
Great tutorial! thank you!
Thank you!
Thanks for the video, very helpful . I can't wait to use the app!
Thank you! You'll find more videos and tutorials in our website :) www.photopills.com/academy
I haven't started any astrophotography yet, going through the pdf, milky-en. I have the app for planning milky way images but didn't know how to use it until now, wow!!! its amazing.
Great! Don't hesitate to send us an email to info@photopills.com if you have any question :)
Thank you Arnie! If you have any question don't hesitate to send us an email to info@photopills.com :)
I really enjoyed that ! Cant wait to get my first planner going...
Thanks! Imagine. Plan. Shoot :)
Thanks! :)
Great video. Love the bloopers too!
Thank you!
this is an incredible product! Wonder when you are shooting so close to the ocean, do you take the tides in to account. Would hate to be all set up and have the tide come in!! Great tutorial!! Hopefully we can all get back out and travel safely to new locations again, soon!! Stay safe and thanks!
Thank you! We'd love to add tides in the future :)
Thank you. It was an excellent video.
Thanks!
Great Video, easy to understand and enjoyed how you presented finding different compositions. Just purchased the app and tomorrow will plan my shot for the "super moon" on monday. Cheers.
Thank you! Looking forward to seeing your photo :D
Brilliant! I understand it enough to go out and practice with it! Thank you!
Good good!

Thank you David! :)
This article will help you to capture the Milky Way: www.photopills.com/articles/how-shoot-truly-contagious-milky-way-pictures
And this one will give you some tips to shoot it in light-polluted skies: www.justinngphoto.com/2014/05/16/how-i-photograph-the-milky-way-from-light-polluted-skies-of-singapore/
Hope it helps! :)
This is incredibly awesome information. Crystal Clear and deep analysis. Thank you for this in depth tutorial.

And my question to the Photo Pills team: Do you have any astronomers in your team? haha
Thank you so much for your kind words Kostis! :D
Divide and conquer! :) thanks for the feedback Michael!
@@PhotoPills Interesting, thank you, and thanks for the quick response! This question was really driving me crazy
And the hoodie is really cool bro.
Yessss
Great stuff guys, really well done. Can't wait to wake up at 2:00 AM next new moon to shoot the milky way in the magic spot! ;)
Thank you! Let's hope for clear skies then :)
amazing video.. helped me alot.. thank you for the help, appreciate it! and Love this application, has sooo many features!
Thank you!
@@PhotoPills Thank you!
First solution is even better because now I can see only Milky Way and the moon.
This is so incredibly useful. I can't imagine the amount of work that went into this app, but I assume there's some black magic involved or something.
Thank you! :D
Hey, first off - the work that must have gone into this app is amazing! When you are doing the AR view, does it use your GPS position, or the shooting pin position for the calculations?
In the Planner, it's the Red Pin Position. In the Sun, Moon and Night AR pills, it's your gps position.
this will replace so many apps and websites for planning.. fantastic hope it's on android
Thank you! :)
Excellent tutorial. Thank you! I was hoping to see the picture at the end though! :-)
Thank you! This is the final image :) facebook.com/PhotoPills/photos/a.444716748921640.100719.334855749907741/1018737618186214/?type=3&theater
PhotoPills Thank you! Beautiful picture!! Just as planned...😉
If I can understand this then anybody can. Very clear teaching - thanks.
Thanks a lot for you kind words :D
Loved this video. Thanks. I've been a PhotoPills user / fan for years. Quick question, do I need a new moon if the moon has not yet risen when I plan to shoot? Is it still dark enough, or would a full moon that is about to rise still add light to the sky?
Hi John! I remember you for the emails we exchanged regarding Full Moon planning and alignments :)
Any night with new moon or the moon under the horizon it's great for Milky Way photography. You can also use the moon when rising/setting to light your foreground :)
We show this blue "power" bar as a reminded of the moon phase. But, of course, the moon can be at 45% phase but under the horizon, and that means it won't interfere with your shooting.
Cheers!

The Developer
(If you go from one country to another you often get large phone bills if you leave data roaming turned on.)
Thank you.
I forgot to say what a brilliant app PhotoPills is.
Thanks for letting me know that. You guys are cool. Keep up the good work!
Great tutorial, great app.. excellent jobs!!
Thank you very much Vanelo! :D
Perfect app and Perfect tutorial 😀 can't wait to shoot now. Thank you for all the information 😀😀
