I can tell that Satoshi knows it's not his subject, since it's about what Shinichi ate as a child, but he really loves tasting the snacks that Shinichi knows so well.
I love li hing mui and crack seed. Probably part of the problem for Satoshi with li hing mui is that sometimes they add licorice to the flavoring. Maybe if you find some without the licorice he'd like it better LOL! But I have to admit that the friends I've introduced it to didn't like it. I think you have to grow up with it as it's an acquired taste.
I was SO shocked 😳 that Satoshi ate the rest of the cinnamon toast! And his reaction to the sour was so funny 😄 I loooove sour but not with any sweetness.
Great selections! We dip Royal Creems in coffee. One Ton chips are, in fact, used as a topping for Chinese Chicken Salad. It even comes in a smaller strip form just for salads, about 1/4" wide. Nibbits used to come in mild and spicy forms so Shinichi, you probably had the spicy one back in the day. Lemon peel was also a "medicine" when we had a cough or sore throat. Better than cough syrup!
I still get regular shipments of Diamond Bakery items from Hawaii. They are the ultimate comfort food to me. We used to put avocado on the saloon pilot bread way before avocado toast was a thing! My aunts always had the "One-Ton" chips at their Mahjong nights - My cousins and I would steal them for snacks while we watched TV in a different room while my Mom and her sisters lost all their money to each other.
LOL Satoshi was like "WHY" when you were explaining the lemon peel ingredients. I love you guys so much 🥰 Even though I lived in Hawaii my entire life, I can't get myself to like pickled mango. Every other snack, 100% agree
Arare and Nibb-its are really good with beer. You are correct about Yick Lung making cracked seed - they used to make the best Li Hing Mui. I thought YL went out of business - nice to hear it was revived. We made a tea from that lemon peel if we had a stomach ache. I also remember that one of my aunts would cook a meat dish with the lemon peel - I can't remember what it was called. Nice video guys! Thanks!
This was so fun to watch! Grew up in honolulu (around the time Shinichi did), lived on the mainland for a while, now back living in honolulu. I haven’t had these goodies in a while, some since small kid time, as i “try” to eat healthy (although admittedly been addicted to li hing mui powder on everything lately🤦♀️ 🤷♀️). These were all my childhood. When nibb-its came on i was like “Yes Nibb-its!!”, totally so expensive though. You guys are so funny and have not lost a child’s purity to have fun, sometimes i see you guys as just big kids 😊. Gotta say, your interaction is so entertaining when something daring/experimental is on the table (like in spicy reviews). Through the anguish, Shinichi tries to remain articulate and focused with staying on point with the review while Satoshi goes into full body reactions: clenched fists, shaky voice, eyes pained. Yet as focused as Shinichi is, he checks in on Satoshi to see if he’s ok and tries to subtly bring him back to baseline by asking relevant questions. During a live spicy review: “Hey, someone said it’s St. Patrick’s Day! Is it?” Satoshi tries but can barely respond with “Maybe 🥵...”. Or: “Mmmmm pickled mango 😃!” “Ugh, so sour 😰!!”. “But it’s like umeboshi 😄!”. Lemon peel: “What’s your impression?” “Why😟??!....Sour 🥴.” “Ok but how’s the flavor?” “Like medicine 🤢.” 😂 Oh gosh, thanks guys 💛👍!

_Super_ nostalgic! I love sharing these childhood memories with you. We didn't have snacks in my home as a usual thing. At school, though, I often had Royal Creem crackers with milk. Yum! My parents gave lots of cocktail parties, and there were always bowls of Arare around for the party-goers, so I sometimes got a handful when the party was over. Crack seed was a special treat for my mom, and she'd share when she bought some. When I got candy, I loved White Rabbits and Tomoe Ame. Happy memories!

Creem crackers are supposed to have a creamy texture according to Google. But who knows why they spelled it that way 🤷🏻♀️. Loved nibbits as a kid. I don't think they taste the same as before. Different shape and I agree, not as spicy, but still would eat them if someone offered them to me. Ate fresh green mangoes with a shoyu, pepper, sugar dipping sauce...sometimes vinegar was added... don't tell Satoshi, he might runaway if you served him that dish! This video could also be called Unique Snacks People Still Eat in Hawaii. Ha, ha! I also wonder why it's Creem and not Cream! When Aloha Airlines was still in existence, I was lucky enough to fly first class between islands and as a snack, they gave us the Cinnamon Toast, yum! When I eat lemon peel, my face looks just like Satoshi. I prefer li hing mui to lemon peel. Nibb-its still has a spicy kick to me, not very spicy but just enough to take notice. I think the best brand of arare is Tomoe Brand, but it's getting harder to find. I think the Enjoy brand is cheaper, so stores like Longs stock them instead of Tomoe. Great video!

And the lemon peel looks interesting. I love sour things (I can eat lemon slices as it is. As a kid I always ate them after finishing drinks) and in Japan I always buy the yuzu peel.

They're savory and taste like soy sauce and are so addictive. When I was a kid they had a gum called quick sand and it was a powder that you'd pour in your mouth and as you chewed it would become gum. It was one of my favorites but they took it off the shelves for some reason (probably choking hazard)
yummy yes brings memories. i liked saloon pilot from diamond bakery. i use the won ton chips on top of chinese chicken salad. enjoy brand kinda new i like tomoe ame sakura arare wow yick lung still around yes they made crack seeds. i like puff rice toong mai i used to buy in chinatown. lemon peel making my mouth water lol.jade makes great crack seeds too. next time but jade brand li hing powder great on fresh pineapple or oranges. yes we made our own homemade pickled mango. love satoshis expressions so funny

I had to look it up, but apparently it means "snow pellet".
Snow is "yuki" but when it's hail it's called "arare" because it resembles the Japanese snack in shape.
