Kolhapur Mahalakshmi, yellora ajanta all most of ancient temples construction in Maharashtra was done by Kannada rulers. Marathas came into picture around 14th. Before that Kannada rulers were prominent.
There was an ancient race called "Rattha" (रठ्ठ in Marathi), who referred to themselves as "Maharattha" (Maha is Great). The name Maharashtra first appeared in the 7th century in the account of a contemporary Chinese traveler, Huan Tsang.

Deccan and specially South India is quiet narrow compared to north India but we find various dynasties ruling these places... I like the rashtakutas...it's one of my favourite hindu empire..
