Golf R for sure. Its very refined and settle. It doesn't scream race car but is an absolute sleeper. Its the perfect daily driver, but can be a monster at the drag strip, especially benefited by the DSG gear box. This car will be the gentlemen's choice between the 3.
Real driving is done in corners...certainly not at a drag strip with a DSG equiped hot hatch. Where's the skill in that, unless you're brake / throttle challanged?
I don't consider real driving only taking corners, even though the Golf R is GREAT at it. I agree there is no fun at a drag with a DSG, i was just saying that because they get faster 1/4 times. I personally only prefer mans-trans and owned a manual MK6 .:R. The RS is just a fun car on the track, the Golf R is all a round a better car, not only on the track and drag, but perfect for daily driving.
Mk6_chino The golf R does everything you need from a daily, but it doesn't take corners anywhere near great. It's infamously understeered and an RS will run circles around it on a track. I don't buy hot hatches for daily driving. I guess if you do the R is ok, but still...buying a 300hp car just to use it on public roads is kind of stupid overkill. That's another thing why I don't like the R. It's a car for an audience that takes speed to public roads where It's just plain irresponsible instead of reserving it for track days. There are plenty of Focus RS on the track days I visit (Zolder, Spa, Nurburgring) andI rarely see them misbehave on public roads. Maybe stereotyping but it has the more responsible/mature audience in the Benelux.
I guess its really going to depend on your life style. A lot of people don't have time to take there car to the track. Which i feel the RS is only good for. The golf R may not be really good at tight corners but its really not necessary unless you're on a track. The .:R is great on canyon and mountain drives, so thats good enough for most people.
The "VWs aren't reliable" thing is so tired and people really need to let go of it. I am on VW #5 now and since my first one, the only thing that ever went wrong mechanically was the ignition coil getting fried. Actually, that's not even a mechanical issue tbh. Fact of the matter is that I have never been left stranded on the side of the road by any VW that I have ever owned. Apart from that, great video. Everything else you said about the Golf R is on point. I love my 2018 7.5 R :)
VW have been scamming the people since their Inception. Their cars are unreliable as hell, which is why nobody who values reliability would buy one. They are shit boxes with plastic oil pans and defective solenoids. They blow up on the Reg and they fall apart
David Robinson I don't know what VW did to you man, the have not been scams since the beginning... Look at the beatle. They are not unreliable in fact they have one of the best factory warranties now. Most new cars have plastic oil pans these days not just VW. They do not blow up on the reg and are not falling apart. You have no idea what you are talking about. I have owned 5 VWs aswell as the original commenter and have only been left stranded twice, once cause my coil pack died on my mk3 gti vr6 cause I did not gap my plugs properly and the coil pack slowly died and the other when I was starting a short road trip in my mk3 tdi that blew a head gasket (was pushing WAY too much boost on a stick motor and throwing WAY too much fuel at it). People like you are the sole problem with car communities and the spread of blatant lies about VWs, they are not unreliable and in fact are amazing reliable. On a side note I traded my e46 coupe for my mk3 gti vr6 while I was in college and it was one of the best things I could've done, it had SOO many less issues and never left me stranded except when I messed up the coil pack, I probably would not have been able to afford school without it as the BMW was a total basket case and left me stranded MULTIPLE times. VWs are great cars and I'll keep them around as long as I can. Hopefully I can get an R as my next car!
I had a 2005 jetta gli for 5 years. And even though i had to chase an electronic gremlin for 2 years in the fan after i fried the ECU being dumb. But it never ever left me stranded. Even when i killed the ECU it still limped home.
The MK7 Rs are actually shockingly reliable (aside from turbo failures on the early euro market cars). In light of that VW has for 2018 boosted both the bumper to bumper warranty and the power train warranty from 3yr/36k and 5yr/60k to 6yr/72k. In light of that I wouldn't worry about reliability, it is probably the most reliable car in its class aside from maybe the Type R but that is too new to say for sure.
The Focus RS can send up to 70% of the power to the rear wheels, and 100% of that 70% to an individual rear wheel. Not 90%. The Focus RS is more fun to drive, but the R is a better car to own.
Riccardo Di Giulio doesnt look nearly as good and we both know performance definitely isnt. If the RS engine didnt have such a bad note it would be over hands down
the focus rs is pretty ugly imo anyways, my point is that looks are subjective, so talking about looks when discussing which car is better is completely useless
You really need to get caught up on VW reliability. VW recently extended their bumper to bumper warranty to 6 years. The only German car that has that out of the usual suspects. My mk4 vr6 had a stage 3 turbo kit on it pushing over 440 whp, beat to piss on a track once a month and just abused by myself and friends and not a single mechanical problem. All that on stock internals and stock transmission. Shitty window regulators, bad mafs, sunroof problems...sure - but let’s face it, window regulators or faulty sunroof motors are not exactly things that are taken into consideration when it comes to a car’s reliability. It’s mechanical problems we all look for. Pre mk3 is when there were some actual reliability problems and since then, people like you regurgitate the “Vw’s aren’t reliable” nonsense they heard from someone who heard it from someone else. Same goes for the b5 S4...that car as well as other b5’s and prior had reliability issues but, once again, it’s carried on over the years by ignorant people like you repeating something that’s no longer true. Your idea of an mr2 being an interesting looking car or good looking car...well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder because the one of the ugliest cars imo. I can’t help but feel sorry for the little guy wen I see one on the road (usually driven by an old Asian man or woman). Good luck with your channel dude...opposite of the rest that I started watching the same time as yours, this channel has gone nowhere. In fact it’s even worse than it was whereas the others have blown up. Gl buddy
Damn dude, way to be a dick. That's because other channels started way before this guy. You're acting like 200k subscribers isn't good. It's hard to go off of car reviews alone, and that's essentially what he does. All he needs to do is branch out a bit and I guarantee you he'll surpass 500k in no time. It's not as niche as it used to be.
I've had several mk4s and have had no huge issues, just basic maintenance things. I love mk4s to death and will always own atleast one. Idk why people give VW such a hard time in terms of reliability they have always been so great to me. I also had a 24v vr6 and it was amazing i miss it to death.
Who likes to change a window regulator? How isn't a part of reliability? Wow that's brutal hate. He said that he loves the car hun. Take a prozac or something. So much anger. It's car talk. VW will be fine because of this GREAT review on the Golf R. He said that it's a better daily driver and that the transmission was awesome? I don't get why you are so mad.
lol man you're so butt hurt you can't even think straight. First of all he clearly stated the unreliability of the vw's were not just from common knowledge but everyone he has talked to who owns one says that. So he's saying people who actually own them are saying that. Also reliability is reliability, that means if the wipers stop working it's part of the reliability of the car. You can't pick and choose what you want to deem as a reliability on a car. I get it the most important shit is the mechanical stuff but that's where you were so emotional you didn't even listen to him talk. He clearly stated that it was the little things and more like comfort things that broke often not the mechanical stuff. He noted it was a great sleeper with amazing performance with the practicality. Lastly, your jab at him and his channel is pretty low as he's at least doing something he is passionate about he will eventually get there it just takes more time for others. Just because you started watching 5 new channels that you've never seen doesn't mean they all started at the same time or had the same opportunities to grow. On a side note, you really shouldn't bash someone on something subjective like what cars look good and then proceed to give your opinion on what looks good. Personally I've never liked the look of a golf, never will get a vw but would and am getting an audi over benz or bmw. That has no meaning but my opinion so no point in bashing someone about something completely subjective as to looks of a car.
Tim Tishenko - I'm shorter at 6,2 and it's the only hot hatch with seats that fit me 😃 .... Focus RS seats are too skinny and squishy .... Love the R's
So fed up of seeing DSG R’s on UA-cam. In 10 years when there’s no more manual transmission , car enthusiast will cry but it will be too late... And this DSG in traffic sucks , this guy is full of it.
payasofeo69 ehh I have a manual Renault Clio 172, it’s great fun but I just bought a mk7 gti dsg and it’s on a different level. It just comes down to what people are buying new, if we don’t buy they won’t build them
LB - well I wouldn't be to worried about having a sweet sounding car 😀 .... The golf r is a bit odd sounding .... Although I don't mind it .... You've deleted the sti's mufflers at least right? 😊 ....
This guy is my kinda guy GT2RS it is 3 pedal lot of power and just amazing machine GT2RS is dream and only machine if i ever own and life would be good
Manuals are life! I'm hoping they still make manual option vehicles in 15 years when its time to replace the mk7 GTI with a new DD and park her in the stable with the supra's and talons.
Tim Tishenko no. It's an old volvo engine with a timing belt, efi and it's not as powerful as the 2.3 ecoboost. Europe got the ecoboost for this gen RS as well. Stop with the misinformation. Shady VW owners.
Tim Tishenko It's a volvo engine. They don't own Volvo anymore. Even Volvo moved on from that engine. The Golf R has a 4 cylinder. What are you trying to prove here? The TT RS and Rs3 have the 5 Cylinder but they are way more expensive. It's about cost and packaging.
Alex Dc that 5 pot turbos are awesome and sound great and have awesome potential. Don't care about logistics of who owns what. 5 pots sounds great while making tons of power.
Nawid Warrdakk - I fucking hate that .... I think it's to force people to watch the videos longer .... It must have been just yesterday morning or the day before when it updated
I know the DSG's the faster trans but fuck I hate them, they sound like crap when they "shift" and you get none of the good turbo sounds. I never had a problem with my 2010 golf TDI when I had it traded it off at 170k km only did a timing belt and the battery crapped exactly at the 5 year mark.
Neither of these cars are able to send more than 50% of the power to the rear axle. Any claim above that is just sales talk using clever excuses to talk their way around the fact that both the R and the RS are front wheel driven platforms using a Haldex (type) diff. You simply can't put more power through that diff than is going to the front axle. The RS somewhat manages to camouflage the frontwheel driven nature by being able to spread that 50% over to 1 wheel while both front wheels only get 25% of the power each, making the loaded back wheel push the back end out and give that feeling of accelartion oversteer that a RWD car would have.
2018 Golf R can send 90% to the rear. I think Focus Rs interior is so ugly and because no one drives a car from the outside I wouldn't want an focus Rs.

Marlboro and Volkswagens have that filthy emissions in common :)
I love it when people call me filthy ;)
Filthy emission FTW lol #becauseracecar #sorrynotsorry
I see this car around town all the time. It never gets old!
Holy crisp, someone get this car an exhaust hanger! That exhaust moves around way too much!! 🍚
Jason S thats what i was THINKING.. lol
I was going to say the same thing....before long it will just break off thats a fact!
Has been mended! Thanks though!

Hell yes, Love Tims R ! Awesome car and Great video as always !
Hi Tim, I hope to see your car next week when I'm in Kelowna.
I give the nod to the Golf R, because, at 6’-5” , it’s the only hot hatch I fit in comfortably.
I am 6'7! And it is super comfy :)
Tim Tishenko - I'm shorter at 6,2 and it's the only hot hatch with seats that fit me 😃 .... Focus RS seats are too skinny and squishy .... Love the R's
editing is dope
So fed up of seeing DSG R’s on UA-cam. In 10 years when there’s no more manual transmission , car enthusiast will cry but it will be too late...

That livery is killing Great hommage to better days tho
I really love VW group cars, but i love STi more because of the AWD system, styling and that typical sound of the boxer engine :)
Wonderful editing man!
Golf R is the king of hot hatches
Love this car, just saw it at the show last weekend. Also don't know if you're still in the okanagan because everything is on fire now :/
you should drive the HPA 700hp Mk6 R36
damn man... i always kinda kick myself for getting my Sti over this
LB sti is a nice car man. The golf r is equally good though
very true, its my dream car but something about owning my 07 GTI makes me miss it, plus how tiny/compact it is compared to the STI
LB - well I wouldn't be to worried about having a sweet sounding car 😀 .... The golf r is a bit odd sounding .... Although I don't mind it .... You've deleted the sti's mufflers at least right? 😊 ....
invidia exhaust couldnt keep that stock sound for long haha
LB - ah good 👏😊 .... I like my subies loud .... I'd probably just muffler delete if I got one as it's cheap and sounds great 😄
I have a 2008 R32 and love it but I'm ready for an upgrade
keep it and turbo charge, and big brake kit
This guy is my kinda guy GT2RS it is 3 pedal lot of power and just amazing machine GT2RS is dream and only machine if i ever own and life would be good
Thanks brother!
Hatchbacks do look good tho 🤔
I think someone needs to sort that exhaust movement out... When you went over bumps, the exhaust movement was far move than it should be...
all golfs come with a 6 year warrenty now. Thats 2 years less than the average life span of a car. Honestly not a bad choice
Another great video! 👍
Sick golf!
where can i find the logos?
Test drove an R with DSG and it was fun, but... Save. The. Manuals.
#SaveTheManuals gotta love manuals!
Manuals are outdated garbage and will soon be gone.
David Robinson Yes, I understand manuals can be too complicated for some people. I'm sorry you are so frustrated by them. 🙋♂️
#SaveTheManuals lmao I own a manual rx7. I love driving it but it doesn't change the fact that its outdated garbage
Manuals are life! I'm hoping they still make manual option vehicles in 15 years when its time to replace the mk7 GTI with a new DD and park her in the stable with the supra's and talons.
That wrap is nice
Europe did not get the 5 Cylinder turbo. That was the old fwd RS. The misinformation and shade is real lol.
So Europe did get the 5 cylinder.. And the new one still should have gotten it. lol
Tim Tishenko no. It's an old volvo engine with a timing belt, efi and it's not as powerful as the 2.3 ecoboost. Europe got the ecoboost for this gen RS as well. Stop with the misinformation. Shady VW owners.
Alex Dc would be a shame for them to put an updated 5 pot in there. 2.5t from Audi has wone best engine year after year.

Wtf is this new UA-cam update where i have to drag to a certain time
Nawid Warrdakk - I fucking hate that .... I think it's to force people to watch the videos longer .... It must have been just yesterday morning or the day before when it updated
vehicle status wants to set your tire pressure I believe mate
With esp off, the collision prevention system automatically turns off. Which is the warning on to info dash.
I know the DSG's the faster trans but fuck I hate them, they sound like crap when they "shift" and you get none of the good turbo sounds.
I never had a problem with my 2010 golf TDI when I had it traded it off at 170k km only did a timing belt and the battery crapped exactly at the 5 year mark.
umm, cigarette advertising and sponsorship is illegal in Canada. This guy could face some serious fines if government regulators ever see this.
😍 I need this
Neither of these cars are able to send more than 50% of the power to the rear axle.
Must be a smoker. Why one exhaust tip? I hit traffic every single day and I have a 6spd.
He made a car look tiny
2018 Golf R can send 90% to the rear. I think Focus Rs interior is so ugly and because no one drives a car from the outside I wouldn't want an focus Rs.
Golf R !
BBC? Beautiful British Columbia
"Bring cash" is what BC stands for
MechRider89 it literally says beautiful British Columbia on its number plate. I was making a joke as its initials also spell BBC, which is a kind of porn. Completely went over your head.
comedyman112 didnt go over my head at all bud. Lol i was just saying what BC means......
MechRider89 where do you see BC in this video or my comment?
two awesome brands marlboro and vw ftw
mat b hows Marlboro awesome?
Alex Marlboro is great because it's the best cigarettes and its healthy
Marlboro 27s
I kinda want a cigarette right now
fuck slow transmissions vs fast transmissions....but a tesla. lol
That is so fucked up promoting cigarettes, or should I say cancer sticks.
Golf r
Mk 7 golf R clutch is a pile of crap
Prefer manual R. DSG snooooze fest. So boring.
87th?
FIRST

I agree all of the points except soccer moms getting this trim. theyll get a suv/minivan/crossover.
*Good point. Not soccer moms. Just regular moms, who want the top trim. Because top trim is often the best, oblivious to the fact that R is supposed to be a performance vehicle.*
Another Canadian poser. Does he smoke? No. Is he getting paid? No
Does the car look cool? Yes. Is it your car? No
Why would you let Marlboro sponsor you or wrap your car with Marlboro??? Boooooo!
Dude, I can’t watch your stuff anymore. Music is too intense, and graphics are too distracting. Showcase the cars not your AV tricks and ominous soundtracks.
Boring...
