    I just want to report that I completely lost it at "OH it tilts the whole bucket NO THANK YOU." Actual, not metaphorical, out-loud laughter (which, by an odd coincidence, was much needed today). Thanks for that.
    Also, in honor of turning off the power, I present the following conversation between myself and my father that took place during the recent renovation of my house's old bathroom into a laundry room:
    DAD: Ow!!
    ME: Are you screwing around with that switch without turning off the power?
    DAD: Yes. (continues to do so)
    ME: Let me rephrase. STOP screwing around with that switch without turning off the power.
    Sometimes I wonder which of us is truly the adult supervision.

      When I first moved into my apartement, I had some people over to install lamps and floors.
      I asked their boss if I should turn off the breakers and he said something along the lines of: "Nah. If one gets shocked he'll fall of the ladder and that's that."

      @@ThePiprian one time years ago my old boss renovated the building, I had to crawl in some weird drop-celling at our workplace to install the lines for an uniterrupted power supply and the AC systems for an office room that was converted into a server room.
      Now imagine me full of dust, barely able to see anything, keeping track of all these cables and doing splicing, pulling them up from the FI breaker down somewhere in the actual room where I can't even see them just trusting I have the right one and hopefully won't short out and kill power on the whole floor...
      I was by myself, had one pair of pliers, some tube and a bag of wire connectors to run 6 power lines to a 400V mains. I am not an electrician, on paper I have zero (!) qualification or training to do any of this. I was just some handy allrounder guy and in waaaaaaay over my head. Looking back, none of this was up to any code and probably super dangerous. I could have killed myself up there if I didn't "naturally" knew what I was doing from playing with electronics since I was small. And of course I got countless electric shocks throughout all my life from all sort of crap I wanted to take apart or modify.

      I've heard about this - And I initially called BS until I did some quick calculations. It's a little bit of inductance at your puny voltages - about 0.5mH. But it's essentially dragging all of the power supplies for those LEDs into line at the higher frequency of operation and eliminating the ringing the lights place on the circuit. So - in essence any small inductor can do it - but a globe is very cheap - but only if HF ringing is the issue.
      Great idea - kina-slaps the engineers who designed non-compliant fittings...

      At the end of the every 6-12 months you're going to have to replace that incandescent bulb after you max out it's 1000-1500 hour bulb life while most LEDs are closer to 50k hours. At worse you're paying for 50 bulbs or more per run to last with the LEDs plus the electricity cost. It's just more economical to get the certified LED equipment with a little extra time and detail put into the prep work.

    • @MrMega200
      @MrMega200 Рік тому +2

      The only LED that is really safe to buy without certifications is really flashlights and most work type LEDs. I've got so many work lights I use all of the time because they are so useful to stick it to a piece of metal and fire light at my work space. Many of them come with hooks or the magnetic side is angle adjustable.
      The other types of lights can be good but they have to go through certifications for safety and quality if you want to deal with converting AC to DC. That's why LEDs in flashlights are just so much easier. That is just why they use the DC voltage as is or do a simple DC to DC conversion for what the LEDs need to run. Also looking to keep your house or shop lights certified is a good way to keep your insurance coverage in the case of a fire and they determine it's because of a light. If that light wasn't certified they can back out of the insurance claim due to it.

    Those scissor lifts are very handy. I have used one and they work really well. I was a bit concerned when I started driving it around while lifted up but it was actually pretty stable. They don't move very fast and they do make fun noises. That roof insulation reminds me of the insulation I had in an old mobile home I lived in. I know about it because you can remove the taillights, which I did to steal a taillight for my car, and, I found there was even less insulation than in your roof. It was a sheet of vapor barrier with thin wisps of fiberglass insulation attached to it. You think I am exaggerating. I am not. This explains why the furnace could not keep up when the outside temp hit zero degrees Fahrenheit. The interior temp never got above 65 degrees. That night I went to bed early and bundled up to get warm. The advantage of it being too cold is you can put on more layers. Can't do much when it gets too hot. Great job on your lighting. I hope the new roof coating and insulation helps keep it more comfortable in there. Definitely a lot of work.

If you hold your hand infront of it and shake it, you'll easily be able to see it. You can also use your phone's camera to see it. He experimented with different materials and their effectiveness at reflecting heat and insulating the cold, so all the hard work is done; you’d just have to measure the door, design the shield so that it can be moved out of the way while the bus is in the building, and fabricate it! I've wondered if (under the sun down in Aus) I could use mylar sheets and cheap contact adhesive to make my roof reject the sun utterly. I have also wondered if pilots might have an issue with a gigantic mirror pointing up at them. Still to come down on either side!

      I've looked into this issue a little, and I found out that flat white actually reflects more light than silver. Gloss white is also better than silver, but flat is the best. Anything is better than black, though. Unless you already have a bunch of mylar and don't know what else do with it, I would say paint would be better and probably last longer.

    Keep an eye on Craigslist and such. I got TWO old scissor lifts for $900 from an electrician. Both needed batteries, the smaller one needed a motor rebuild, and the larger needed a lift arm bushing. I've fixed up the smaller one (the bigger one has just been sitting forlorn wishing I loved it) and have been using it to build my shop for three years. It's SUCH a game-changer! I even rigged it up to use it as an electric drywall lift. And as an added bonus, one can rig the batteries to an inverter and have a pretty hefty supply of backup power.

    You should try going on a boom lift that is extended all the way up and leaning all the way out that it can... and then realize it is one of the kind that is only sitting on its wheels (using a few hundred pounds of lead-acid batteries as a low to the ground weight and allows you to (slowly) drive around while you are up there. I'm not an electrician but I'm 90% confident that if the lights and outlets were wired as a multi-wire branch circuit (hot from two different phases on a double-pole breaker) then you shouldn't have needed a new neutral. If both branches are fully loaded at, say, 20 amps, the neutral current is zero. Worst case is one fully loaded and the other at no current, in which case the neutral current matches the load current (i.e., 20 amps).
    Too late now but maybe it could save you some time in the future.

    • @fanplant
      @fanplant Рік тому

      yes as long as they're on different legs. New code though wants the two circuits on a 2 pole breaker but I think you can put a tie between the handles in that case (can't tie two breakers by the handles for a 240v load though, must trip internally). Frankly though I think in his situation he can do as he pleases

    A quick tip, sharing neutrals actually lowers the amperage on that neutral so the higher the amperage of the different circuits the more it can help. The downsides of sharing is if you turn only one circuit off you can get shocked from the other circuit (code says to put all breakers sharing neutrals onto two pole/three pole breakers to force all shared circuits to be off) also if something goes really wrong, it can make things a bit worse

    LED drivers use a step-down converter that runs at a high frequency. It pulls from the AC power during half of that (pulse-width modulated to get the right current and/or voltage). When you have 24 high frequency adaptive things pulling from one circuit without any compensation, those will go from matching up with peaks to being interleaved really quickly. When they match up they'll need to pull power for longer, when they interleave they'll have more power. Basically, each of the lights assumes it's one of the few draining the circuit alternatingly and nothing else does such a thing. When you add 24 of those, it's a giant mess.
    To fix this, the lights typically apply some kind of smoothing to the output (so the light flickers less), a buffer capacitor to the output of the step down converter (smoothing out how much current needs to be pulled during operation, but worsening the behavior on startup) and a thing that does power factor correction - which is to not make such a mess on the input side.
    Pretty sure your power company thanks you for removing those lights :D

    9:55 - Um... Bob? Why didn't you make/buy hoods for those lights? Outside of the insulation job, you're going to want those bad boys shining most of their light down, not up or sideways. It's just sheet metal, and you can make a jig to help bend the hood blanks into shape. Yeah, it's more work, but this way, you're not paying to light the ceiling more than you have to.
    EDIT: I just remembered, they have LED bulbs for florescent fixtures and LED bulb/fixtures that work like florescent fixtures. It's the same look, but much easier where a burnt LED bulb gets replaced JUST LIKE A FLORECENT FIXTURE... Probably run the same price. I have them in my utility room. They work great.

    The neutral can be used for both circuits as long as the two circuits are different phases. The neutral then carries the remainder of the current not balanced by the circuits. If they’re the same phase then the neutral will carry the sum of the current. Retired HVAC/R guy here.

    The new lights appear to have aluminum channels which if that's the case, will help them last a longer by acting as a heat sink. I installed similar ones in my warehouse a few years back, and they've been running perfectly. At the time I bought them, each 8 foot light used $5 bucks in electricity per year, definitely a major upgrade over the failing fluorescent fixtures I replaced.

    On a multiwire circuit you can still share a neutral wire. The two circuits need to be on opposit phases/legs. The neutral will only carry the imballance of current between the two circuits. Also, MC cable is required to be secured within 12" of a box.

    Heyo! Led lights are usually driven by constant current instead of constant voltage to provide even illumination. Wiring them in series is mosy popular way of doing it, cuz in series connection, you have the same current flowing through every LED, while voltage lvls adjust to internal resistance of every diode (which is not linear and different for each LED, even if they are all the same type) . Most led lights fail because of cheaply and poorely designed ac/DC converters inside of it

    Man I can relate to this.
    Our OM615 swapped Toyota Lite Ace was having clutch problems, and I started removing the gearbox. Problem was it didn't fit in my garage, because it's too high, so I was working lying on my back. The rain didn't help me to get any joy out of this process. When I finally had the gearbox lying on the ground and inspected the clutch and pressure plate, I found out they were abolutely fine, almost brand new in fact. Nothing wrong with flywheel, release bearing or slave cylinder either. I sloppily assembled everything back together hoping for a miracle, but nothing happened - the clutch still didn't disengage. Only then I thought about checking the master cylinder, and it was a defective chinese unit which had a broken pushrod - it has a plastic ear on the pedal end, which of course snapped. Four hours on my back in the dirt for nothing.
