Framus Dragon Test

- So I just bought a Framus Dragon. This is the raw audio into the mic, and is no way a playing showcase. I have only had it for about a day and these are some tones I dialed in. I re-biased the amp to about 33 mA (it was set to 24 mA). Overall I really like the amp; it is probably one of the clearest amps I have played. It has the stock tubes in it, so I am changing them out soon. Let me know if you have any questions.
Gear used:
Framus Dragon
Mesa Boogie 4x12
Rockbox Boiling Point Overdrive
ISP Decimator
ESP Ec-1000
THD Hotplate
Recording:
Shure SM57
Apogee ONE
Garageband
Wow dude, Framus amps sound amazing.
nice man sounds sick. look forward to the song your gona record with these two.
It has a sick sound, I love it.
Great Demo. It is of the best amps ever made.
The riffs from 1:50 till the end are some of the greatest i have ever heard.
Yea I love the Boogie Mark V. Killer amp and like you said, extremely versatile
@acompres Peavey sounds more raw and slightly more aggressive. The Framus is clearer on the high end and has better cleans. The Framus is also much darker on the lead channel. Granted different cabs/speaker combinations will make them sound much more different than how I am running them.
I owned a Dragon for about 6 months and liked it pretty well. I mean, I could find no huge issues with it other than what staytrue has mentioned. Tolex is indeed very thin (My carry handle actually split..never had that happen before), and I did notice quite a bit of Fizz to it, and also corrected it the same way he did. I found it to be quite pedal friendly as well. With a Ts9 or 808 it stayed fairly tight and hottened up a bit. Just a bit dry sounding for my taste.
@bigbadbri1988 To my knowledge, they still make it. I believe Framus is now distributed under Warwick. They have raised the price of the Dragon by $1500 dollars in the US this past year. The current price for a new Dragon (according to the Framus website) is $4530. When I talked to a Framus dealer a few years ago, I was told the company was going through a restructuring process.
@Ryator08 Thanks man. I actually just bought new power and preamp tubes so once I get those, I will record it.
sounds soooo buttery
@joeboogie83 Yes. For this video my settings were:
Gain : 5:00
Drive: 7:00
Tone: Noon
Bass Contour: Off
Clean Boost Setting or middle position.
I have since found that if you want a slightly clearer sound, try:
Gain 3:00
Drive 9:00
Tone 11:00
Bass Contour : Off
Clean Boost selected
For the second setting, lower the gain a bit on the amp.
@xounds Thanks. It's a riff I came up with right before I did this. Might try to make a song around it at some point.
@johnosstreeter Yea it is different, but I like it a lot. I just re-tubed it and it clean things up a bit. The crunch channel is unreal; it seems it can do the classic rock tones well and takes a boost extremely well. It also seems pretty effortless to record with too. The lead channel on this amp is pretty dark, but if you tweak the EQ enough you can get it to cut through.
@staytrue0407 post when done? Where'd you get the Framus and for how much? The sound is so clear.
Love the lead channel tone!
What would you say is the best amp for hardcore/metal, the 6505 or the Framus?
Wow that sounds amazing! I have been looking for a cobra for some time now but Im about to purchase a fireball 100. How much did this bad boy cost and how does it compare to the peavey?
@slash5155 Thanks dude. Yea I will keep it. I figured I would post a video of it since there is no decent videos of it mic'd up. I am going to re-record a song I wrote (hopefully soon) and blend the 6505 and the Dragon.
@schecterguitarsfan Thanks dude. I just re-tubed the entire thing and I'm still tweaking it, but it's definitely improved from this video.
@johnmarquis1983 I'll try those settings sometime soon. As for a boost, I use a Rockbox Boiling Point. The BP has a few different settings on it, so I can get a plexi style tone out of the pedal. It would really help if I had a different guitar set up for the classic rock stuff. The ESP really isn't that versatile in it's sound.
@staytrue0407 Awesome i will check that out. Im in a hardcore band from the UK called Honour Your Pain and we recorded our EP with one of these and ever since iv wanted to get my hands on one
That riffs you played starting from 1:51 and 2:15 is that songs, or your own stuff?
sounds really good, and great demo by the way! ;)
This is what Geordie Walker from Killing Joke uses live.
@ma4400 Yup I plan to. I got it used from a guitar center. I believe it was about $1000, but I sold another guitar so I basically didn't pay anything.
@Gazorz That's hard to answer. The peavey is by far the best amp for the price, and is somewhat of a one trick pony. There is a reason that a lot of metal bands use the peaveys to record. The Framus is a very clear amp and can definitely get the metal tones with a boost. The Cobra would be better suited for a more modern metal sound. You can get both amps to sound very similar with a boost pedal and an EQ.
Just realized that the splitting carry handle would be more of a leather issue, but still quality. If memory serves me, it was a leather strap connected by two metal fasteners/semi-loops. Just wasn't pleased when it snapped and nearly fell. Luckily enough I was actually able to hang on by the frayed strap! close call to say the least with $1100 dangling from your hand
That's an awesome tone! I was wondering what song you were playing from 1:51? Thanks!
Hey! nice demo.. where did you place your sm57? It has a nice "cover video" tone really capture that live roomy feel lol
i made mention of mine being "for sale" yeah (the backup head) but i wasn't trying to sell it. i suppose i could have just left that out entirely i have asperger's syndrome and do that. yeah i was just hoping to get my clips heard and also further promote these amps. they really are incredible imo. they do need the bias set properly and even in this clip it sounds a bit cold. i've got mine set perfect and it's warm and taught classic to extreme. Just amazing amps imo. though....
@Hylianmetroid New they are about $3000. Used they range from 1200-1400 depending on the condition, but I got mine less than that.
i have had a dragon for a long time now. how do you like it so far?
it takes some times to dial it in, first day i got it i thought it sounded bad, but as you learn to dial it, thing get great.
Mate , the isp decimator, you are using it through the effects loop or infront of the amp, cause framus has parallel effects loop which i heard that does not work well with noise gate pedals(serial loops works better).
please tell me your best setup with your dragon, whats the best infront and whats the best through the effects loop.
Dude that thing is so sick!
Are you keeping the 6505?
@floydian961 For versatility, I'd go for the framus. For a great metal tone at a cheaper price, go for the Peavey. Both are great amps none the less.
Hey man can you please tell me if you know what the difference is between the framus cobra and framus dragon are?
Thanks
since marshall couldnt make him famous, he got a framus
What overdrive do you use? is it used on the front of the amp on inthe fx loop?
V nice
you look like jeff from parkway drive awsome gear dude do you ever play gigs with a band?
@onthronez2003 I run the ISP in front of the amp.
@staytrue0407 Ok, I think i'll go with the 6505 with a boost :) thanks for the tip!
Do you like your peavey 6505 plus or framus dragon better?
is this an attenuator? the purple one?
How much is this amp head? And where did you buy it?
Do you think this head has enough gain to take on dying fetus/ suffocation and in general death metal stuffs?
I've had mine for over a year with no issues. Are the built like my Peavey? Absolutely not....the tolex is thin on the Framus and the internal boards are not as stable as the Peavey. It just takes a little more effort to keep it in good shape.
As for the fizz, you can get rid of it by increasing the bias and keeping the channel volume above 3 o'clock.
In front, Rockbox Boiling Point Overdrive.
@Splinter2101 Thanks. Yea I get really tired of "demos" that have shitty audio.
I've a got a rack tuner, I'll trade you the Framus for it😁
@PJRake Yes, -16dB
Thanks, those are from songs of mine.
Where did you buy it?
great amp;relatively cheap in europe (1800 euro). ,only a diezel and a boogie mark 5 are more versatile i think.
@staytrue0407 nice man.
Cobra is a more aggressive sounding amp compared to the Dragon. The Cobra is more dry and compressed than the Cobra as well. Most people use the Cobra for modern metal, but with a boost, the Dragon can get into the same territory.
@staytrue0407 4530$ for a framus dragon? :O
over here in germany you can get it for 1400€
ha yeah i see. no my only sneakiness was in hopes you'd hear my clips. yeah i sort of have one for sale but i have a buyer already. i just wanted you to hear my clips because i got some very different tones and wanted to share them:)
but definitely not trying to sell the amp to you. more shameles self promotion of myself and of the Framus Dragon itself. i loved them so much i bought two! lol
need to hear it without a overdrive pedal! to see what it really sounds like. without a hotplate too...
you did in the intro it would sound bad in that tiny room w out a hot plate
Have Framus stopped making this amp now?
after 8 years thoman selling it for 1000 euros.iam thinking to buy it
Jeff Ling!
Napalm Death`s guitarist uses this)
Finally a video where someone mic'd the thing! you cant judge a tone that was recorded througha piece of shit camcorder, sweet tone and riffage dude.
@maugiguitar Nope the harmonics are great with this amp.
Can't really say which one is better. The Peavey is easier to dial in, but not as versatile as the Framus. Price wise, the Peavey is hard to beat.
i can send you some more links if you are interested. they aren't fizzy at all unless you bias them cold (and all amps from the factory ARE biased cold). i own two Dragons (one's for sale) and they're very impressive. drop me a line or check out "descend to abyss(with Framus) on my soundcloud profile. that's all dragon, no post eq or anything.
@ImaDjentleman Versatility, yes. All out metal, no.
Wanna sell that dragon?
Do you have tabs for it ?
no i wasn't trying to sell mine to you i was trying to send you clips of me playing mine. i'm not the poster here. i have different tones and thought you'd be into hearing them. mine to me are smoother than this clip though this guy's got some great clips my dragon sounds a bit smoother plus i'm a different player so if you decide oyu're interested check them out:)
Always the same - beginners who want to show the capabilities of professional music gear. In the worst case they are talking like professionals and play that you can not find a word for it.
I dont see any videos of you playing on your channel bro.
if you have a mesa cab and a framus dragon, for god sakes man, PLAY SOMETHING HEAVY!!!
