  • Placing books on a music stand and keeping them open is a problem for many musicians. Books with spines that prevent them from staying open is very frustrating when studying music. Many music books are quite thick and although many modern music stands are able to accommodate a large amount of music, it is often difficult to stop the books from closing and remaining flat when trying to read music.
This video shows my simple solution to this problem, which has been used on my music stand for many years with my guitar students.

Great idea. You can also try elastic instead of string (the kind used in clothing). I tried that and it works a little better as it allows some flexibility.

I did experiment with elastic bands and a piece of elastic. although they did not hold the thicker books open as well. I can see that a stronger piece of elastic with a bit of give would work Weill. Thanks!

    Great tip!
I play guitar and sing. All I need are lyrics and chords, so I have a Fire HD 10 tablet with screenshots of my songs. I have a tablet holder clipped to my mic stand. I use a photo organizer app with folders like "60's" and "Open E Slide." This solution is lightweight and allows for expansion.
    Have a great day!

I would say maybe not tying the string so tight so it just about hugs the book. So page turning isn’t as tedious. The elastic string also sounds good as someone else mentioned.

Or just string with a bit of give. Definitely great for those annoying closing books!

I have the books rebound with a coil binding so they stay open and page turning is easy.

Any book that contains notation should really be spiral bound or somehow designed to open flat. I have hundreds of music books and the majority have regular binding. Combining this with my not liking to see books damaged results in music stand frustration... hence the string. Having books rebound is the ideal solution.

@@PaulHillGuitarist I agree, but nowadays most books are bound in the cheapest way possible which means they do not lie flat. Having them rebound costs some money, so I guess doing a whole bunch can get too costly! I have one of those metal page holders that you put on top of the book but turning pages is still a pain with those.

@@knittysong I tried many solutions over the years and the simple string solution works really well. Once you find the optimum string length, it is not too difficult to flip off the string, turn a page and put it back.

How do you turn the pages in long songs?

    • @PaulHillGuitarist

This is more for study purposes if you have an annoying thick book that decides to constantly close. All music books should have some sort of spiral binding so they open flat!
