Am not sure if you are fully aware who this is - this is a top notch, highly pedigreed plus highly trained and highly skilled, drummer and teacher, a fantastic cultural resource, a guide to the wonders of African music. You guys are super lucky to have him in the middle of nowhere in Minnesota - someone of this caliber should have access to tons of opportunities to perform and teach, usually metropolitan area. I do hope that there is enough support to share his knowledge.
The joy part comes from really jibing with the music. This guy is a djeli, or a grio, which means he comes from a long lineage, from a family that has done music/dance and peacemaking for many many generations. They are masters of it and most of them (I can't say all because there is always bound to be one :) are really peaceful and loving kindness kind of people. The joy is a natural part of it. It spills into the music and makes it very pleasant and energizing at the same time. Study some more
