- In this video I react to UK vs US Kit Kat. The Kit Kat bar is definitely one of my favorite chocolate bars, but I had no idea they were originally made in the UK. I'm excited to try some of the UK Kit Kat varieties as I know Brits definitely make good chocolate.

Many years ago I worked for Chrysler in London. My American boss had 2 children that had been born in the uk. He was going back to the USA for a holiday and was looking forward to giving them their first Hershey chocolates. When he came back I asked if they’d all enjoyed it. His reply, “why did I ever like this crap? It’s actually revolting and the kids thought so too”!!
Apparently the 'vomit' taste is a result of burning the milk during the heating process, and somehow it stuck as the 'American' way to make chocolate. You can experience something similar by trying to toast Parmesan cheese in the oven. Just put some on top of bread or something, and bung it in the oven. Mm. Enjoy the smell and try not to throw up.

@@o00nemesis00o No - the vomit taste is actually a result of the chemical they use in the pasteurisation process - it's the same chemical found in human bile, hence the vomit taste - seriously worth researching that yourself as it does sound so unbelievable!
Butyric Acid (as found in vomit) is used by Hershey's as a milk preservative.

The Chocolate Orange, you said your wife enjoys, is British. It was first made by the chocolate company Terry's in the early 1930s. When I was young, they were a staple at Christmas time - don't think I ever had one at any other time of the year! Unfortunately, Terry's was sold to Kraft in 2005 and the Terry's factory in York was shut down. Our beloved Chocolate Oranges are now produced in France :(

Ah yes, the Terry's chocolate orange. I once concocted a plot for a story my niece was writing for school where the murder weapon was a chocolate orange in a sock.

Chocolate and Orange is a classic flavour combination. What used to confuse kids in the UK was KitKat was a chocolate treat but Kit E Kat was a tinned cat food.

The reason why it says "May contain milk" is because the factory it's produced in will be using milk but they can't 100% say there's no cross contamination between the milk and that bar. You see it with other foods too
True, how many non-nut products say "may contain nuts"
To cover themselves incase of someone allergic to a particular ingredient. Some would try to sue the manufacturer but a well placed warning or mention of that ingredient stops any case against them.
Kitkat was invented by Rowntrees of York UK around 100 years ago...the reason for stopping the foil packaging is simply because food packaging rules changed, the foil could be easily torn and the food contaminated
You can still get foil/paper wrappers in multipacks IIRC, just not as bars sold singly.

And the other reason was that two-finger bars in vending machines suffered from condensation, which caused the wafer to swell and the chocolate to crack (and fall off all over your clothes). This doesn't happen to the foil-wrapped two-finger bars.
It also sucked when it was slightly warm and bit of foil tore off on the Kit Kat. D:

Terrys chocolate oranges. They are lovely. We also have Dark chocolate and mint ones which I got recently they are nice. Also we just call these biscuits sometimes used for dunking in tea.
Terrys chocolate orange also come in white chocolate (Terry's chocolate orange snowball) and Toffee flavour (Terry's chocolate orange toffee).

KitKats in the US are made under licence by Hershey and have a distinctly different taste than KitKats made by Nestle. Hershey was forced to reformulate their recipe for the basic Hershey bar for sale in Canada because the US version couldn't compete with Dairy Milk.
I'm pretty sure that when Nestle bought out Rowntree, the originator of Kit-Kat and many other brands, they "improved" the recipe to European standards and ruined the bars. The famous Yorkie bars became unpalatable until a new generation unfamiliar with the original took over.

The best Kit Kats are the ones where the machine hiccups and the wafer is missed out, so its pure choclate. As for Hersheys, the local supermarket got some Hersheys stuff in for Halloween. Its still on the shelf, price cut after price cut. In the UK we say 'One bite of a Hershey bar gives you the strength to fling the rest away and the resolution to never try one again.'
Hi Steve. Hershey's isn't available in many places in the UK. Kit Kat was originally made in my home town York by Rowntree Macintosh before that company was acquired by Nestle in the 80's. Where I lived from my early 20's near the factory you could smell the chocolate in the air!
Hershey's alleged chocolate is available in just about every supermarket chain in the UK except the ones like Aldi and Lidl. It's not good chocolate, in fact it's quite repulsive to someone brought up on European chocolate.
Norwich also had a rowntree factory, oh the smell 😍😋 it is something you can never forget. Such a shame when it shut down
Going to work before 6am - the smell of KitKat chocolate can be quite a strain on the stomach...
I used to work at the factory in york, I have made the chunky kitkats, that was my favourite job because it was easy.
The most interesting part was working in the polo mints department as there was a permanent cloud of mint and sugar dust in the air that tingled your eyes and your throat then you breathed in (it wasn't unpleasant)
We had to use special p.p.e. because of the cloud of mint and sugar, the factory had exploded a few times when someone had accidentally created a spark because *sugar powder is explosive!*
@@grindelston5968 I worked next to some of the Polos stuff, in Smarties & Vice Versas back in 93. They were high security (relatively) because Rowntrees were always paranoid someone would try and sneak pills in to mix with them.
Edit - any fine dry powder that will burn, mixed with air, is explosive. Flour, milk powder - even powdered coffee.
Most British chocolate was made by Quaker firms, such as Fry’s, Rowntrees, Cadbury and Terrys. Until the 19th century, Quakers were not allowed to go to university, so they started firms that made useful products and chocolate became popular.
No you're not, I always eat one finger at a time. Here in the UK we also have one not mentioned here, its the kit kat zebra, yes its striped, dark and white chocolate mix.
The Kit Kat advertising in the UK was iconic - "Have a break, have a Kit Kat" - I recall the "pop star audition" one well!
Kit Kat made in my home city , by Rowntrees long before Nestle bought them out . My dad worked there 52 years . It’s still made here in York , the chocolate City . Worlds biggest selling choc bar . Unfortunately Terrys that made the chocolate orange has closed and is made somewhere else . At its peak Rowntrees a Quaker family concern employed 14,000 people , founded in 1862 . 5 million Kit Kats made in York every day !!
Hahaha.. so pleased you pulled him up on eating the kitkat like a savage... each finger is broken off..and I even nibble off the edges... also love it when you get a 4 finger kitkat and one of the fingers is pure chocolate where the machine didn't put a wafer in... had that a couoke times but it's rare.

Terrys chocolate orange and kitkat are both from York in the north of England. Went to school in york and the smell was fantastic!
M&Ms (1941) were a diect US copy of Rowntrees' Smarties (1937 - although they were a rebrand of 'niblets', which dated from 1882), after Forest Mars saw Brits eating them in the Spanish Civil War. They were originally only produced for the US military (the sugar shell stopped them melting).
We have the Kit Kat Chunky which is that larger bar after the 4 bar pack.

@@SteveT--UK ooosh yes boxes of broken biscuits, lovely with a few cups of tea , I actually prefer them to normal store bought. I work with a few lads on the bins that worked at rountrees, was meant of been of great place to work

I had some chocolate from USA and Canada as a kid and I thought it was made to put kids off chocolate it was so awful tasting
When I was in school a teacher brought back some American chocolate with her from her recent holiday there and gave me some as reward for scoring the highest on a test. It was so vile that it astounded me how so many Americans can eat so much of it. I've generally found the same with other American foods I've tried too. They must have really screwed up their taste buds with all that crap they stick in all their food.

I think so too. The only American chocolate I like are Reece's because the sugary peanut butter taste is strangely good.
We have 2 kinds of chocolate powder in the UK that are used to make drinks - 100% Cocoa (pronounced like the "coco" part of coconut) and "drinking chocolate, which is a mix of cocoa and far too much sugar.
Terry's Chocolate Orange, Terry's was a UK chocolate company, founded in York in 1767. It became part of the Kraft Group in 1993 then Mondelez in 2012 6. It changed hands again 2016 when it was bought out by an investment
company, becoming part of the Eurazeo group along with Carambar, a French company, All Terry's products are now made in the Carambar factory in Strasbourg, France.
Lotus is a Belgian biscuit company. Biscoff is one of their products, a small biscuit flavoured with cinnamon, often given as a free accompaniment to coffee in independent coffee shops in the UK.
Lotus Biscoff is an oval biscuit that has become popular and therefore they also make a spread and many recipes using Lotus Biscoff.

17:35 - Biscoff, that's a caramlised biscuit (I guess what American would refer to as a cookie), made in Belgium and often served (individually wrapped) as a gratuity alongside a cup of coffee in car show rooms or waiting rooms. I do buy a lot of them. They have released a caramel spread and an ice cream (oh & McDonalds now have a Biscoff flavoured McFlurry!)
and it's hardly worthy of the biscoff part, just has biscoff crumble and toffee/caramel sauce... u can melt down the spread and use it as a sauce like we do at our ice cream parlor its not hard just literally warm it up and it goes liquid like
UK does or did have the jumbo/chunky single stick, brought in during the late 2000s or early 2010s.
Although it might now be on a smaller production run with a smaller range of outlets selling it, if it's not beebn cancelled.
I always wanted a jumbo sized 2 or 4 stick offering, but neste never did that..

Wikipedia says Kit Kat Chunky came out in 1998, probably near the end of the year as I first remember seeing them in college.

Chocolate in orange shape we call "Chocolate Oranges". One of the biggest difference in chocolate is the amount of cocao solids. In US needs to have 10%, in UK 20% and in Europe the amount has to be even high. What we call chocolate in UK technically doesn't qualify as chocolate in EU. When we were part of EU the rules around chocolate had to be adjusted to allow UK to continue to make chocolate they way we like it and still call it "chocolate".

The flavour of Kit Kat is Kit Kat. When they were first produced there were a lot of rejects or miss shapes, these were ground up and used as a filling for the wafer.
They're still made that way.
It's always been a required ingredient.
It used to be that you could tell the difference in taste, between the two-finger and four-finger, as they were made with different chocolates. The four-finger was made with 'export' chocolate, which was all cocoa butter (it's not legal to sell chocolate without all cocoa butter in some overseas markets). Thankfully, they upgraded to all the same chocolate in the late 90s, improving the old Rowntree chocolate altogether.

Dark chocolate can definitely be sweetened. If it’s unsweetened, it usually says so on the packet. Chocolate and orange together is a very old combination! Yum! And Chocolate mint combo is so more-ish!

If you think the UK has a lot of KitKat flavours - you should check those sold in the Japanese market! They even have a Wasabi flavour one!
Cadbury's, Rowntree's and Fays were all firms run by Quakers. They were ant-alcohol by their faith so they got involved in drinking chocolate and chocolate. Their religious beliefs also meant they looked after their employees very well. Cadbury's built a small town call Bourneville, will excellent houses, parks etc. for their staff. First companies to give staff pensions. Lobbied for walkers rights etc.

We do have peanut butter here, but it's generally considered a savoury thing that you might spread on toast, rather than in combination with something sweet such as chocolate. At one place I worked we had a canteen that made fresh sandwiches, and I often used to ask for a peanut butter and (hot) sausage sandwich. It had a sort of pork saté flavour to it! 😄
Terry's chocolate orange is also a British developed chocolate although god knows who owns it now all our traditional chocolate companies have been taken over but still made to our recipe in the UK, Twix & Starburst are also British
Years ago I had a kit kat which was all chocolate with no biscuit inside. Obviously this was a mistake on the production line, but it tasted great .🙂

17:10 - peanut butter is popular enough, however I haven;t seen any recent advertising for it (Sun-Pat peanut butter used to be advertised on TV all the time in the UK - although that was probably in the 80s!) Personally I stopped eating it and only use it as bait for mouse traps now...
They mention 'Snickers' which was originally sold in the UK as 'Marathon' by the UK company Mars. However When Mars was acquired by a US company who called it 'Mars Incorporated' it was renamed to the US name 'Snickers' although we luckily kept the UK recipe which is much nicer than the US version
'Mars Incorporated' says they are owned my the Mars Family but that is because 'Mars Family' is a business name in the US & the original 'Mars' family in the UK own 0.02% shares in the brand. Mars is actually owned by 'Berkshire Hathaway Incorporated'
In the US the company is listed as founded by 'Franklin Clarence Mars' which again is not true. Franklin Clarence Mars is the man who made the buyout deal for 'Berkshire Hathaway Incorporated' & changed his last name to Mars even though he never actually owned it.
Berkshire Hathaway Incorporated already owned many brands in the US & which became subsidiary's of Mars Incorporated along with several other UK & European brands they have bought out like Wrigley's plus many more they stripped for specific products & discarded anything they already had versions of or didn't think the US consumer would want. This unfortunately meant that we in the UK lost many types of confectionery we loved.
Because of the way the US legal system works they can claim many things about the 'Mars Incorporated' brand which are really from the 'Berkshire Hathaway Incorporated' company history but makes it seem like Mars is originally a US company with a long US history & they make no effort to include the UK company history in any of their information to the US public.
I'm in the uk. We have more sizes than that! Chunky, snack size fingers and more. Where does this guy live? Not in the UK I know. We haven't had riots, but kitkats are much more expensive usually.

Yes a lot of British sweets and chocolate bars with taken over from rowntrees Mackintosh in Halifax Yorkshire. By Nestlé. Most of the products what's what say Nestlé were originally rowntrees Mackintosh from Halifax in Yorkshire when they took the company over a took all the products with them and KitKat was one along with lots more chocolate products.

The use of the name Kit Kat or Kit Cat for a type of food goes back to the 18th century, when mutton pies known as a Kit Kat were served at meetings of the political Kit-Cat Club in London owned by pastry chef Christopher Cat.
The origins of what is now known as the Kit Kat brand go back to 1911, when Rowntree's, a confectionery company based in York, England, trademarked the terms Kit Cat and Kit Kat. The names were not used immediately and Kit Kat first appeared in the 1920s, when Rowntree's launched a brand of boxed chocolates entitled Kit Cat.

UK Kit Kat bars ares SO MUCH better than the US ones. Born and raised on Kit Kats (amongst other biscuits) when I came to the States I was so disappointed by the fake chocolate on the Kit Kat which I could literally peel off the wafers. The UK chocolate is real chocolate which tastes so much better and you can't peel it off, it just melts on your fingers. The Japanese have 300+ unique and interesting Kit Kat bars such as Green Tea, Wasabi, Strawberry, Rum Raisin etc. They have delicious chocolate also. In the UK we don't consider Kit Kat a "candy bar", we consider it as a chocolate biscuit. We have hundreds of varieties of chocolate biscuits which we enjoy with a cup of tea regularly throughout the day.
Terry's of York is the company that produces Chocolate Oranges. I prefer the dark chocolate ones, myself.

Rowntrees was an independent company in York, until the 1980s when it was bought by Nestle. So kitkat were always English. When Hershey bought cadburys a few years ago they promised that the iconic dairy milk would not change. They lied and it now tastes different. It was always a different recipe in america. I was told that the higher quality recipe was not allowed in america!!
With Cadbury's, we heard recently, our vendors of ice cream from vans and kiosks etc..... are "up in arms" concerning the current quality of the small Cadbury's flakes for catering, that they put in soft ice creams to make a "99" cone? We now know that the American owners, Mondelez International, have moved production of this product to Egypt of all places! Strange choice I would have thought. No wonder they're even more cheap and nasty now?
I love peanut butter. I’ve had the peanut butter KitKat chunky, it was fantastic. I’d always pick peanut butter in anything. BTW, I’m based in Scotland.

Dark chocolate is chocolate without the milk or butter, so "putting it in your shake" if it's milk based shake, it is NOT dark chocolate.
_Raw cacao powder is made by cold-pressing unroasted cocoa beans, this process retains the living enzymes and removes the fat (cacao butter)_

The 24 Pack is sold to shops (not the public which is why he couldn't find one) to then sell the bars individually.
They stopped using foil as it does not seal & gets damaged very easily.

'Biscoff' are small biscuits (Cookies) flavoured with Cinnamon, Butter & Caramel that you serve with coffee
We also get the Tubs of KitKat Ice Cream
As well as the 'KitKat Bunnies' & 'KitKat Santa's' we also have 'KitKat Reindeer'
Peanut butter is pretty popular here in the UK not as big than America but is very popular especially if like me you actually buy the best peanut butter which is sorry to say is American Skippy or Jif as ours are good but not so creamy like those I mentioned. Love Jif & Skippy yum yum yum 😋. Also America makes the best crisps ever which sadly we can’t get here in the UK and that’s yummy yummy get in my tummy Ruffles original lol.
I don't know about the Nestle chocolate, Cadbury's is different. Hersey's make Cadbury's chocolate to be sold in the States, there is the real deal in the States but isn't allowed to be sold the same way in shops/stores.
The reason that Hersey's isn't liked of here is because of an ingredient that is found in the chocolate, an ingredient/chemical found in vomit (mainly babies vomit). It has something to do with keeping the milk fresh for longer.
The original Kit Kat was made for the workers to buy, this was because of the price of chocolate. The workers were treated very well for the time, the company built a village for the workers.
Terry's chocolate orange is the one you are thinking of, they are originally from the UK like the Kit Kat (both based in York).
I think PB&J made it popular in the States, where as over here not so much (it is on shelfs in every shop).

They brought out a limited edition a few years ago with coffee flavour. Delicious, but they discontinued those. I like peanut butter kit kats, and the dark chocolate ones are great. Terry's make the chocolate orange.

Hi Steve, I enjoy a Kit Kat but I'm a bit of a purest, only 2 or 4 finger origionals for me, non of the fancy flavours, I don't even eat the Chunky. I agree with most Brits that a Kit Kat is a biscuit snack to have preferably with a cup of Tea or Coffee and not a 'candy' (how was my American accent there?)
Terry's of York (the same city as Rowntree who invented the Kit Kat), produce the Chocolate Orange and that is a firm favourite of mine, and for all those that whimsically say "it's mine, not Terry's" .... My first name is Terry, so they are all mine. 😛
A little known fact is that "The Big Three" in the confectionary world here in the UK (Cadburys, Rowntree and Fry's, plus Terry's were all started by the followers of the Quaker religion, along with many famous businesses, Clarks shoes, Barclays and Lloyds banks, Bryant & May matches and biscuit firms Huntley & Palmers and Carrs plus many more. It is a dark chocolate bar filled with a spearmint centre.
Peanut butter is widely available in the UK, but as you suspected, it isn't as popular as in the USA.
The reason for the may contain milk warning is because it's made in the same factory as the regular bars, similar to the may contain nuts warning.
The UK also has the mint version, which is very different to your mint version. The chocolate orange you mentioned is made by Terrys
Peanut butter is almost a staple food in most South African households. By the way, if you haven't tried a sandwich with butter, peanut butter and golden syrup you haven't lived! LOL That's a favourite memory from my childhood.

My favourite Kit Kat ad is where two women are doing the housework when they stop to hav a Kit Kat. The baby does the vacuuming, the washing up and cleans the kitchen. When the women finish their coffee break they find the house work has been done. “Have a Break Have a Kit Kat”.

Agree. I love peanut butter and always have a jar in the cupboard to put on my toast a couple of times a week. But i think we recognise that it's far more popular across the pond.

Until recently Crunchy Nut peanut butter was available in the UK but it looks like they discontinued it -- a shame because it was amazing.
I’m in my 60’s and Kit Kats have been here all my life. I love them. I dunk them in a cup of tea. Kit Kats are British.

Yeah it's not massively popular in the UK. It's the sort of thing you have a jar of in a cupboard for years, but never eat.
Japan has taken Kit Kat to another dimension! I haven't tried Japanese Kit Kats and to be honest, I wouldn't know where to start.
I know finding a solid chocolate Kit Kat is a rare event, but it's always a cause for celebration whenever you find one as you know you've got value for money what with the more expensive chocolate not having been bulked out by the cheapo wafer.
Some of the Japanese kit Kats are SOOO sweet it's unreal, but some very interesting flavours. I was pleasantly surprised by the green tea flavours!
Someone gave me a Japanese wasabi KitKat.
It wasn't hot, but was light green.

I adore peanut butter and seafood. My son is allergic to nuts and partner is allergic to seafood. I generally sob in supermarkets as i pass chunky peanut butter and the fish section...

Terrys Chocolate Oranges, a very english chocolate, used to get them in xmas stocking sometimes instead of an actual orange.
11:37 - that would be a Terry's Chocolate Orange, created by Terry's in 1932 at Terry's Chocolate Works in York, England. Sadly, like a lot of UK things it is no longer manufactured in the UK, nor is it British owned any more... There is a great Wiki article about it - they even made bars made out of orange segment shapes!

Your heading on this video says CANDY but in the U.K. Kit Kat and others are called Chocolate Bars and any sweets covered in chocolate are called ‘chocolates’ and not Candy; we call Candy ‘Sweets’ and Candy is only generally used for Candy Floss( cotton candy in the US).
Many Americans hate US Dark chocolate but love British dark chocolate, completely different taste, so try to get some of that if you can. Walmart have a British food section and there are US based websites that sell British foods so you could order from them too.
Having worked within drug rehabilitation in the UK, there was a reason that the old tin foil kit kat was the number 1 biggest selling chocolate bar in the UK and it was not for the chocolate, but the tin foil. Since the change it lost that spot on the selling list.
That’s really interesting. I had no idea about the foil and why it was changed. I know I miss running my thumbnail down the foil to open it. Those were the days.
