Man I used to love Marathon Bars. Shocked to hear they were gone by 81. Anybody remember Bottle Caps? They had root beer, grape, lemon, orange flavored chewable candy in a bottle cap shape.
I grew up one street away from members of the Brach family. Halloween was always fun; they'd thunk an entire BAG of one of their candy brands in your little plastic trick or treat pumpkin!
Yes indeed. The Brach's candy section also had another cool feature. Did yours have a nickel, dime slot take just one or two? That was my favorite part 🍬🍫👍
I miss penny candy. For the young people that have no idea what I’m talking about: on the bottom shelf were individual wrapped pieces of candy that were one penny each. There were a variety of flavors that you could mix and match. After school, while walking home, we would stop by the convenience store and buy some penny candy. This started in the first grade.
Oh man the news stand in my town sold penny candy, I very often got 100 Swedish Fish for a dollar and always wanted to count them to see if it was really 100 but never did.
I loved those wax soda bottles and I tried some a couple years ago. I wondered why I ever liked them because they weren't good. Thank you for watching and sharing some you loved.
@@RhettyforHistory I loved them as a kid. I'd bite the top off and spit it out, then drink the 'soda'. Then I would chew on the wax bottle for just a couple of minutes before spitting that out as well. I liked the wax lips better, though.

I grew up loving chik o stix and when they disappeared I assumed that they were gone forever but then they came back to the store shelves probably 20 years agoish and I still love them today...
I remember when something similar similar to chik o stix was called "Chicken Bones"--presumably because of their yellowish color and the way they would splinter when you bit into them. They were tasty, but that name was quite a turn-off..."Chik o stix" is much more appetizing.
I miss Chunky made with the original formula, before they cheaped-out and substituted peanuts for cashews. Even the chocolate isn't as good as the original, which I recall was darker and less prone to melting.
anyone remember those paper sheets that had those candy drops lined on them and when you peeled them off paper usually stuck to them but you ate them anyways paper and all? I always wondered if those things were still around.

Always lived near a variety store in my childhood so I retuned deposit bottles and bought candy. Best memories from the 60s and 70s. Worked at a vending machine company through the 80s and got to try everything new. I have three crowns on my molars as trophies. 👑🦷😮
We had swedish fish for a penny at my parents variety store. We had tongs but the kids would always grab them with their hands after they got done digging through the trash for the 5 cent deposit on the cans.
I miss Nestle Alpine White so much, they were just so so amazing. And so awesome to see someone else remembers Bonkers, I loved them so much. Also Bar None and PB Max, I ate so many of those back in the day.

Every major department store would have a candy department where you could buy candy in bulk, and high quality boxed candy, as well as hot popcorn, fresh hot roasted nuts, and and other goodies.
I remember those nut-and-candy counters. And not only department stores had those counters, but also five-and-dime stores...another institution of my childhood gone (most likely forever...sigh).
I remember when United Artist movie theaters dropped fresh popped popcorn for pre-popped bulk in big clear plastic bags that they dumped in their bins to shovel out in buckets. Their popcorn sales tanked because there was no smell to entice sales...

The ones wrapped in gold paper? That was one of my very favorite candies. I always wondered why it was taken off the market. I would think that they could have changed to a different food color.
How the times have changed. That Brach's display at 00:23 used to be a staple of supermarkets; if we were lucky, we could get a bag as our parents shopped, but that was usually out of the budget. The Neapolitan coconut candies were a favorite in my household. While some places we'd visit would have the old-timey penny candies (usually gift shops in places like Harper's Ferry), the 5-cent Bazooka Joe gum and candies were still common at 7-Elevens in the '80s. Saving our lunch money could get us a Pepsi and a small bag full of candy. On a military note, the Mars Bar that was packaged in early (brown bag) MREs wasn't bad. It was just a solid chunk of chocolate and was often chalky colored by the time I ate them (late-'90s, most were five-plus years old by then). I recall getting some M&Ms in MREs that had '92 Summer Olympic promo codes. While not candy, the dehydrated fruit was pretty good either reconstituted or eaten dry like a candy bar. For throwback candies, Tractor Supply has a decent selection, and I just noticed that my employer (Bass Pro Shops) has a candy display that seems to have some older brands.
Those little Brach displays were great. You could get a little candy for a little money and it was a great way to try new kinds that you hadn't before. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories anonymousm9113!
So many delicious candies gone… yet somehow, Whoppers still exit… the only person I’ve ever known who actually love those malted milk balls was my late Papa! We bought him a carton every Christmas 😂😂😂❤
My dad loved those things but I have never been a fan of them. I do have a daughter that likes them but probably not as much as my dad did. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us!
I loved Butterfingers BBs! Some of my favorite candies from childhood that are no longer around are the little boxes of Jawbreakers, Butter Brickle, BB Bats, and Kits.
My sister loved those! When I got them, I used to have to soak them in a glass of ice water to cool them down enough to eat. She got them whenever she got the Brach's pick-a-mix.
@@KB0101 I bought a container of Atomic Fire Balls in mid-June at a very large candy store. I remember when smaller ones were sold in a box for a nickel at the local movie theater.
We used to have a candy called "Bleep Blips" that we could get from the supermarket candy machines at the front of the store. They were a sour-sweet candy, like Sweet Tarts. They were each about the diameter of a quarter, but more like an oval shaped UFO-looking candy with a thick ridge around the diameter. I always wondered what happened to them. I never knew what company produced them.
Rhett, I enjoyed your discontinued candy video. I remember a candy that I absolutely loved years ago that you couldn't buy in a store. You could only buy this whenever a school, church or social club was having a fundraising event. The candy was in a round tin box that you opened with an attached key, it was named Katydids it was chopped pecans and caramel with a milk chocolate coating. Have a fantastic weekend. Take care 🐎
I used to buy Marathon bars when I was a kid. The bad thing about it was because it had a lattice shape and the chocolate layer was thin, when you took a bite, the chocolate crumbled and fell off the bar in little pieces.
I miss the Alpine white bar, there's no white chocolate bar like it now. I also liked Jolly Ranchers. I remember how hard the paper was to get off the extra large flat ones! My favs were orange and peach, out of the bag. The big ones only came in apple or watermelon, as I recall. I liked Bonkers, they were good and the big soft Sweet Tarts that were chewy. Thanks for the memories Rhetty! Keep up the great work!
Back in the late 90's there was a television series called "Brimstone", The main character is sent back by the Devil to return escaped souls to Hell. One episode has a sub-plot where a box of "Reggie" bars is tracked down from a collector... You know what I miss, That gum that used to come in packages of baseball cards. It would be stale and was like eating a piece of pink glass, But I miss it and that's my 3,483 cents...
Of all those candies, I miss TasteTations - the chocolate ones. Individually wrapped they were perfect to tuck into a pocket or purse for a quick, sweet treat. Here's one nobody seems to remember but they were wonderful: York peppermint Mints - They were small balls of chocolate coated in a hard, white, mint shell and came in a round tin.
In college and my first job, the Milkshake Bar was my main chocolate bar whenever I felt the urge for chocolate. It tasted great. I still remember working late at night and eating one of those things to give me the energy for overtime.
For all you 70 year old kids out there, the real 50s, 60s candy and snack experience! Milky Way and Snicker Bars in translucent wax paper wrappings, Look, Big Hunk, Lik-m-Aid, Pixie Sticks, Chunky, Bominos Turkish Taffy, Chicklets, Black Jack and Beemins Gum, Seven Up Bars, Kits, David's Sunflower Seeds, Charms, Sweetarts, Long penny Tootsie Rolls with folded not twisted end wrappings, Fizzies, Flav-R-Straws, Bit-O-Honey, Pez, Milk Duds, Raisinetts, Good and Plenty, Smith Brothers and Ludens Cough Drops, Rolos, Raw Jello powder. More I'm sure, but these come to my senile ridden mind!
I miss those Brachs candy displays in stores where you bagged it yourself. Also Bonkers, raspberry gum and various other gum flavors, as well as early 80s novelty candy.
I loved Good & Plenty pink and white black licorice candies, the small jaw breakers that came in a box ( at the movies) and Jujubes by the Heide candy company. Jujubes can be found at Walgreens still today. My sister and I would stop at our town's popcorn and candy stand before we went to the drive-in movie. Charms suckers, red vines licorice and hot buttered popcorn were our "double feature go-to's"!😊❤
My favorite chocolate bar was called Zero, one of my favs I cannot get anymore. They were the licorice gobstopper jawbreaker. My favorite candy now is called Rockets and I hope they stick around.
You forgot Nestles ChocoLite. It was the first aerated chocolate bar. It had little rice crispies in them. I was really hoping you'd cover that one on this list. Chocolite was popular in the 1970s
As a child in the 1970s my favorite flavor of jelly bean was called ICE BLUE MINT and it was discontinued for tasting too much like toothpaste but I loved it it was so darned refreshing. No other version of "mint" compares to it for me.
I'm not a big candy fan by far. But, I did like Rally Bars. I eat Mounds and peanut butter Twix a couple of times a year. My fave is the 100000 Grand Bar! Thank you, Rhetty!
Thank you for watching walkerk777! I still see the Zero bar but I'm unsure on anything from Tom's. I love Tom's products but I could only get them traveling away from where I am. I specifically remember them in Georgia and other eastern states. They had their version of a Butterfinger which I liked even better!
I remember when Bazooka bubble gum came in a tube, but you couldn't blow bubbles with it, and you ended up swallowing it. There was also "Phony Baloney", bubble gum shaped and packaged like baloney. It was sold at Begley's drug store back in the 1980s along with Black Cows, which were hard dark caramel all day suckers covered with chocolate. Yum! They have been reincarnated as Reisen chocolates.
I liked this!!!! popping candy is used in a lot of chocolate bars in the uk. its always nice to have. i remember having candy corn years ago ,but now the taste is not nice now it has totally changed. Im from the UK but still remember a lot of these American bars. There is always something so charming about the old commercials and advertisements for these things. Thankyou for sharing
We were lucky that at Halloween the stores would sell mixed bags of little boxes of good n plenty and good n fruity in one big bag. Well, Dad loved the good n plenty but would not buy them just for himself, but at Halloween, he would buy a bag, justifying it "for the holiday," and give us girls the good n fruity and he'd keep the good n plenty. Those were the days!
A few of these candies are found in farmers markets, and restaurants like Crackle Barrel. I found gum with licorice in the restaurant. My favorite and still is Reese's Peanut Butter cups, and Musketeer bars. Though today, they cost about $2.50 for a small bar but you can get them at the Dollar Store for $1.25 plus tax. Everything today is pay more get less!
Zagnut Bars were my favorite! They were like Butter Fingers rolled in toasted coconut. We have a store in my town that still carries so many of these discontinued items. They even have penny candy and bottled drinks from when I (I’m 67) was a kid. Anybody remember those little bottles of delicious Brownies soda?😋
Thank you for this video, I grew up poor, but I would use my allowance to buy a Marothon bar on Friday, and eat on it all weekend,I could still taste it when I watched this video! Sometimes the worst of times, are the Best of times😊😊
Here's a few I miss!! Abba-zabbas, Rocky road bar and See"s raspberry cream with dark chocolate Off the subject, Hostess made a powder sugar donuts with raspberry jam inside!! I missed them!!!!
Abba-Zabba's where you bite it and then see how long you could pull on it before it broke off the bar and that soft marshmallow & nuts chocolate cover bar
Now you have that jingle in my head again, Rhetty! When you mentioned Powerhouse from Peter Paul! "Powerhouse, No Jelly, something something, Caravelle. Peter Paul makes a mouth taste swell...! Different bites for different likes...!"🎶 Haha! I'm glad the S'mores Bars were mentioned because I had Halloween miniatures in the early 2000s and thought they were the greatest!
Candy cigarettes are the best. Barely anyone sells them now Bec of the stigma of what they represent to kids. I don't understand why they don't call them candy sticks or change the shape Bec the actual candy is unlike any other candy ive ever tasted.
I like the taste of those too. I also liked the gum. I remember blowing on them and the corn starch around the gum would come out of the paper looking like smoke. They got rid of then so kids wouldn't get the idea to smoke the real thing. I had them my whole childhood and never wanted to smoke the real thing.
I can find them but it's difficult, and a lot more than I paid for them as a kid! I liked the big bubble gum cigars also, I only remember them being in bubble gum ' pink' and some in blue. Our local hospital use to sell along with real cigars at the gift shop.....back when a proud Papa bought & gave out cigars to celebrate a birth,!
Along the same lines were the tattoo candy/gum with at least one temporary tattoo in each pack. We wore them at school much to the dismay of our teachers. I think they were discontinued for the same reasons as the cigarette candy (which was very nice from memory).
When I was in 3rd grade, back in the 70s, As a treat every Friday our teacher would go out and get the entire class candy. Yeah I know, back in the day you could get away with that but it was awesome! I remember when she used to get the marathon bar, it was a super special day because those things were so huge it felt like you were eating three entire candy bars! That had to be my favorite.

“The world may never know.” 😂
I’m always Rhett for these Saturday videos!
Thank you for watching every Saturday jkxelor1295!
Here’s a popular one you left off of your list: The Caravelle bar - Made by Peter Paul. 😉
Thank you for watching and mentioning that one Super_Chief!
I remember the caravelle bar, they were so good!
@@VickySwindoll One of my favorites! 😋
We used to love Atomic Fireballs. They were sold out of a glass jar on the candy counter.
Now they are in plastic containers when you see them. Thank you for watching KB0101!
My sister loved those! When I got them, I used to have to soak them in a glass of ice water to cool them down enough to eat. She got them whenever she got the Brach's pick-a-mix.
In South Africa they sold Fireballs in a three ball packet…i remember the strong cinnamon taste of those Fireballs…and boy, they were HOT🔥🔥
Take care 🐎
Whatchamacallits, Payday and Butterfingers. And of course Snickers.
Thank you for watching and sharing some of your favorites!
oooh yea, looved Whatchamacallits! :)
Which all of these are still available
Good Morning Rhett 🙋🏽. I had forgotten about a lot of these candies.
Some of these were really good! Thank you for watching Carole!
@@RhettyforHistory you're welcome Rhett 👍🏽😃. Have a wonderful day ‼️❤️
I loved the Powerhouse bar, I haven't been the same since it went off the market🎉.
I used to buy Marathon bars when I was a kid. The bad thing about it was because it had a lattice shape and the chocolate layer was thin, when you took a bite, the chocolate crumbled and fell off the bar in little pieces.
Butternut candy bar was my favorite. They need to bring it back.
My dad's favorite candy was the Butternut bar. He would one every Friday to reward himself for another week of work well done.
Oh and I really love the candy cigarettes especially the chocolate ones wrapped in paper
Found a nostalgia candy store in Branson , MO. My Mother in law , and I had a blast in that place . The marathon bar was my favorite.
Back when I was a kid we had those candy Easter eggs with a candy shell and a white cream in it.
I love old candy stores!
They should definitely bring back the 7 up bar…I loved those so much.
Thank you Rhetty for History for a fantastic video. All of a sudden I have a craving for something sweet! Keep up the good work.
You're welcome Mikey! Thank you for watching and hopefully you found something to satisfy your sweet tooth!
SNAPS !!! Licorice candy in the red box marked "Still Only 2 cents"
The prices of candy back then! All of a sudden candy price has skyrocketed! Thanks for the memories Rhetty!
You're welcome and thank you for watching travelingwithmikeandpam9074!
What I remember most about Nestle Alpine White is actually the commercials. They had a very dreamy music score!
Yes, you're right about that. They made you feel like you were fancy to go get one. Thank you for watching and mentioning that.
I remember going to Yankee stadium as a kid and they gave out free Reggie bars when it first debuted.
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us mq3177!
I loved the Seven-Up bar. It was a candy store in one bar. I remember the Milkshake bar was hard to unwrap.
Astro pops, whistle pops, and Mr. Bones are all candies I miss.
Thank you for watching and sharing what you miss justmejenny7986!
Yes! Loved Mr. Bones💀☠️🦴
I think they are sold in a box or a patty still.
Would love to see you do one of these on discontinued cereal! Discontinued cookies would also be great!
Thank you for watching and the suggestions. That's a great idea!
Are there any videos on the old vending machines? Like the ones that contained toys, gags etc?
DOES ANYBODY REMEMBER THE SUGARDADDY & SUGARBABBIES ? DAMM ME & MY LIL BROTHER USE TO LOVE THOSE CANDIES.
I remember those. Thank you for watching user-rc2rk9eu4n!
That gum you like is coming back in style.
My husband bought me some Black Jack gum recently at Giant Eagle. 😊
Thank you for watching NeutronDance!
Loved the Milk Shake bar, especially frozen!
Thank you for watching and sharing one you loved!
4:20 Coconut Grove bar: Rich In Dextrose!!! Hahahaha🤣
Thank you for watching Brian!
Thanks for the memories ❤
You're welcome and I appreciate you watching Monika!
Another great video. Thanks Rhetty!
You're welcome and thank you for watching Lone-wolf-1982!
The Power House bar had a unique taste that was addicting. I would love to find one out there somewhere. Great video!!
I miss those Brachs candy displays in stores where you bagged it yourself. Also Bonkers, raspberry gum and various other gum flavors, as well as early 80s novelty candy.
Some stores let you put a quarter in a box and take a sample piece of candy and eat it right away.
Odd, I can still get Zero bars at Wal-Mart. =0[.]o=
This is one senior that can say I’ve never heard of half these candies.
I had only one Reggie bar.. I remember thinking it reminded me of the others that had the same combination, like a Snickers..
Next time I'm out shopping, I'm gonna look for older candies. I miss candy cigarettes and Twix peanut butter and those smarties lollipops. 😢
You forgot Nestles ChocoLite. It was the first aerated chocolate bar. It had little rice crispies in them. I was really hoping you'd cover that one on this list. Chocolite was popular in the 1970s
I definitely remember those. I will have to do another episode with some more candy. Thank you for watching!
Try Aero bars!!❤
Loved that one
Born in 1970 and I remember eating the Marathon Bar in the mid-70s. you probably meant 1973 for the debut
Agreed -- my father had an ice cream truck in Bklyn NY & definitely remember the Marathon bar in the early 70's . LOVED IT !!!
@@pamelalapierre6678 the video says they came out in 83 later saying it was discontinued in 81. lol
Grade school 1970 something I watched a kid pick up a marathon bar from the dirt and ate it 😮 I never had one 😢 memory's last a good long time.
I caught that error as well.
@@billmadison2032 Yeah , I caught that too . I suppose he meant 73 not 83 . I've been looking for that bar since then !!!
As a child in the 1970s my favorite flavor of jelly bean was called ICE BLUE MINT and it was discontinued for tasting too much like toothpaste but I loved it it was so darned refreshing. No other version of "mint" compares to it for me.
Oh Henry! That used to be one of my favorites. I think they still sell them in Canada. Thanks for the video brother.
I think that I have seen them in the U.S. recently. I will have to look and make sure though. Thank you for watching Russell!
I'm not a big candy fan by far. But, I did like Rally Bars. I eat Mounds and peanut butter Twix a couple of times a year. My fave is the 100000 Grand Bar! Thank you, Rhetty!
You welcome Jen. Thank you for watching and sharing some of what you do like.
Thanks for another great video. In addition to the Milkshake bar, I miss the Zero bar and the full size Tom's Peanut Butter Logs.
Thank you for watching walkerk777! I still see the Zero bar but I'm unsure on anything from Tom's. I love Tom's products but I could only get them traveling away from where I am. I specifically remember them in Georgia and other eastern states. They had their version of a Butterfinger which I liked even better!
Zero bar now made by Hershey's. It's pretty good!
In the penny candy, I loved the individually wrapped chocolate nut caramels. We just called them "Squirrels" as that was the brand on the wrapper.
I remember a few I miss
Zebra stripe gum, the wax bottles, bazooka gum,
I remember when Bazooka bubble gum came in a tube, but you couldn't blow bubbles with it, and you ended up swallowing it.
The one I thought you would put in the good n fruity candy. THAT was way better than good n plenty 😂
I’m surprised how many I’ve never heard of. Must of came and went so fast. Now I want a candy bar really bad. 😁👍
Hi Jodie! 👋😁🇦🇺
Hi Paul 👋😁🇺🇸
@@swansfan6944 👋😁🇦🇺
My favorite was the Snickers candy bar. I remember buying them in the 1950's for five cents. Compare that with todays price.
Definitely a lot more money now. Thank you for watching and sharing your favorite with us.
Yes, you're right about that. They try to trick us but we notice. Thank you for watching and sharing what you like and have seen.
remember Chunky? a thick chocolate chunk with raisins and peanuts? a real tooth destroyer that one.
Thank you for watching and mentioning Chunky!
Swoops had catchy commercial too. They used that song "whoomp there it is". I liked the pringles shape to them
Yes, you're right and they were definitely catchy! Thank you for watching RockFan89!
Thank you for this video, I grew up poor, but I would use my allowance to buy a Marothon bar on Friday, and eat on it all weekend,I could still taste it when I watched this video! Sometimes the worst of times, are the Best of times😊😊
I remember the Seven Up bar! One of my favorites.
Thank you for watching and sharing one of your favorites nickimontie!
Is Chik-O-Stik still around? Loved it!
Here's a few I miss!! Abba-zabbas, Rocky road bar and See"s raspberry cream with dark chocolate
Off the subject, Hostess made a powder sugar donuts with raspberry jam inside!!
Candy cigarettes were an entry level type of candy conditioning kids to smoke. That was a terrible candy to target kids with- candy cancer sticks. smh
@user-ct3oq5ez8elol!! That was great! Don’t tell me it actually worked??!❤️🤗🐝
