My son is drooling over this reel. He is 14 and he loves vintage Penn Reels and he loves customizing stuff. He thinks this is the coolest thing.

It’s the best way to go.. the Penn and DAM Quick from days gone by are easily still top performers. They have stood the test of time, while many Chinese junk reels have found residence in the landfill’s.

I’m currently working on a completely Chrome Mitchell 498 large saltwater PUM spinning reel. I only work with the appearance and mechanics of a reel and not any changes to the actual structure of these vintage masterpieces. Prior to this Chrome reel I only stripped a few reels and used both highly polished parts like side plates combined with very nice multi-coat automotive paint and clear coating. I’ve also done a lot with power knobs and PUM conversions. I collect vintage surf spinning reels but have only recently started with these major appearance creations. I’ve tried to collect as many of these vintage surf spinners in pairs of bailed and PUM versions. I have more Mitchells and Penns like this than others. I did recently acquire a pair of French large Bretton 902 /903 reels that are really unusual. I also have a matched pair of the Luxor Saumon Mer surf reels in bailed and PUM. My rarest surf reel is a French Mer 52 PUNCH PUM spinning reel. I’ve only ever seen one other in my life. I loved your transformation of a Penn 710. I love my 6 Penn greenies so much like they are that I just couldn’t do this to one of mine. I have every style of the Penn 700 and 704 greenies that were produced including a 1st edition 1961 700. Looking forward to more videos of your creations! -- C T Jenkins, Apex, NC

That is an old Singapore 20cents coin you put on the reel. It is a swordfish. Cheers

Did you do the 712 gears also (higher gear ratio)? I'm currently converting all of my 710's that I use
I'm also on VPR, great page!

I have a Crack 300 with no bail it has a spring that holds the line on the roller so that when you stop reeling the line won’t fall off the roller

I have a Luxor No. 3 L (same reel basically) with a full bail. It has a thin wire under the line roller as well.

Nice reel. The crosswind roller, the brass grommet that connects the crosswind arm to the main gear, is installed incorrectly. It should be installed under the crosswind arm so it separates the crosswind arm from the main gear. I just finished bringing back what I believe is a very old 704Z with black spool. Paint is rubbed away in places on the body, rotor and spool but no corrosion surprisingly. I intend to have it powder coated with a clear satin finish if possible so no one mistakes it for a new reel and still have the metal protected.
