- Hello friends, welcome back to 'Sujata Magical Moments.' Today, I’m sharing a very special recipe close to our hearts, the Shradh Special Pitru Paksh Thali. This thali is prepared to pay tribute to our ancestors during the sacred Pitru Paksh period. It’s a time when we honor them with prayers and offerings, and what better way to show respect than with a delicious, homemade thali?
The thali we’ll be preparing includes Urad dal ki Puri, Aloo Sabzi, Lauki ki Sabzi, Rice Kheer, Dahi Vada, Pakode, Arvi Ki Sabji, Chola and Aaloo Raita - all traditional dishes that are ideal for this ritual. Let’s explore how to create this soulful meal step-by-step.
•Urad Dal Ki Puri
Puri is a classic dish during Pitru Paksh, made using Urad Dal Paste and flour. It’s gluten-free, light, and pairs perfectly with the other dishes.
Ingredients:
2 cups Kuttu atta (wheat flour)
Urad Daal Paste
Salt to taste
Water (as needed)
Oil for frying
• Aloo Sabzi (Potato Curry)
Aloo Sabzi is a simple, flavorful potato curry that complements the puris perfectly.
Ingredients:
4 medium potatoes (boiled and Mashed)
1 tsp cumin seeds
Black Peppt
Salt (namak) to taste
2 green chilies (slit)
Oil
Water as needed
• Lauki ki Sabzi (Pumpkin Curry)
Lauki ki Sabzi is a sweet and tangy pumpkin curry that adds a unique flavor to the thali.
Ingredients:
500g pumpkin (peeled and diced)
1 tsp cumin seeds
salt to taste

Oil
• Rice kheer
rice kheer is often included in Shradh thalis as it symbolizes prosperity and sweetness in life.
Ingredients:
1 cup basmati rice (washed and soaked)
1/2 cup sugar
Chopped Dryfruits
•Aalo Raita
Aloo ka Raita is a simple, refreshing yogurt-based dish with boiled potatoes, making it a cooling side dish for the thali.
Ingredients:
2 medium-sized boiled potatoes (diced)
1½ cups fresh curd (yogurt)
Rock salt (sendha namak) to taste
1 tsp roasted cumin powder
1 green chili (finely chopped, optional)
A handful of chopped coriander leaves
• Chole (Chickpea Curry)
Chole is a flavorful dish that adds a rich taste to the thali, making it more wholesome.
Ingredients:
1 cup chickpeas (soaked overnight)
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper powder
1-inch piece of ginger (grated)
2 green chilies (chopped)
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp ghee
Water as needed
•Arbi ki Sabzi
Arbi ki Sabzi is a delicious and nutritious dish that’s commonly prepared during fasting periods.
Ingredients:
250g arbi
Ajwain
1 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper powder
1/2 Curd Yoghurt
Oil
•Pakora (Moong Dal Fritters)
Since besan (gram flour) is not used in Pitru Paksh thalis, these pakoras are made using moong dal paste, resulting in a crispy and light snack.
Ingredients:
1 cup moong dal (soaked for 3-4 hours)
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 green chili (chopped)
Salt to taste
Oil for Frying
Sliced Pumpkin
• Dahi Vada (Lentil Dumplings in Yogurt)
Dahi Vada is a classic dish that adds a soft, tangy, and creamy flavor to the thali.
Ingredients:
1 cup urad dal (soaked for 4-5 hours)
Rock salt (sendha namak) to taste
1 tsp cumin seeds
1½ cups curd (yogurt), whisked
1 tsp black salt
1 tsp roasted cumin powder
Oil for frying
Water
