How To Make A Clock In The Home Machine Shop - Part 1 - Making The Frames: • Clockmaking - How To M...
Abbreviated Transcript:
0:00:20 In his famous research paper "Gears From The Greeks" historian Derek De Solla Price put forward a stunning theory regarding the device known as the Antikythera Mechanism. That the origins of our modern day engineering achievements, what he called our "recent age of High Technology", could be found in this ancient device. He theorised that the profession of clock and instrument making had acted as a silent "carrier" of a larger, and much older technology tradition.
01:08 Clockmakers, he said, had played a crucial role in the emergence of our modern world, and that the clockmaking tradition itself, was part of a distinguished main line of technology that could be directly traced all of the way back to the Antikythera Mechanism.
01:25 The Ancient Greeks had written the original language of the mechanical engineer, and had left behind a record of it in this incredible device. A calculating machine, that used complex mathematics and precise engineering to model the Ancient Greek understanding of the Cosmos.
02:01 The phase of the moon, retrograde motion of the planets, and even barely observable details like the precession of the lunar orbit, were all modelled according to Ancient Greek astronomical theory.
02:23 Now I should point out that this is not the first time that someone has made a version of the Antikythera Mechanism, in fact far from it. There have been more than a dozen reproductions that I'm aware of, the most notable of which are the two constructed by Michael Wright.
02:58 But there will also be plenty of opportunity to investigate some of the construction, as it would have been undertaken but the original maker more than 2000 years ago. The data for the reproduction will be sourced from the latest research, mostly from the published work of Tony Freeth and his colleagues of the Antikythera Mechanism Research Project.
03:18 I've used his published gear schematics, and dimensions, together with the raw scan data to generate what I think is a faithful CAD model of the mechanism.
04:04 So while I will cast the raw stock for some of the parts from a homemade bronze, for convenience I'll make the majority of the device from commercially available brass stock.
04:32 These elements will be reflected in the reproduction, but the wood case presents a small problem with regard to this video series. It would obstruct a lot of the mechanism, and prevent you from seeing everything as its being built, and we can't have that.
05:00 At the end of the project, I can either remove the pillars entirely, and replace them with the original wooden structure.

The Antikythera Mechanism Episode 1 - Greeks, Clocks and Rockets, by Clickspring.
Chris- I know you're an extreme traditionalist, but due to the beautiful complexity of the mechanism, would you consider an acrylic case, possibly with LED lights to really show off your handiwork?
Hey Zach, appreciate the suggestion, but definitely no modern materials or technology - It will become clearer as the build progresses why this must be so, but its essential that the device be as consistent as possible with the historical evidence. The end result will still showcase the internals of the mechanism, but it will be done in a way that fits the evidence - Cheers mate :)
Could you use hand-poured glass, or would it simply not be clear enough to show the goodies?
The main issue with using glass/acrylic etc is that such materials are inconsistent with the idea of making a faithful reproduction - there was no glass in the original. Using different materials compromises the idea of it being a true reproduction, and turns it into something else. An interpretation rather than a reproduction. There are already many interpretations of the device, there s no point in doing another.
What has *not* been done before is a *genuine reproduction*, right down to the finest detail. To the very last pin and rivet. By following this meticulous route, there will be an opportunity to do some serious "engineering archaeology" - but the device needs to be the real deal, or the conclusions drawn about the engineering techniques would be meaningless.
Clickspring it's awesome to see how traditionalist you are. Are you going to include theories as to how the original gears were cast/shaped up? I find it hard to believe such mechanical precision from so long ago
+TheSameNameasYou Yes, it will be a lot of fun to make a few the hard way!!
Six years later... wow, massive dedication. Just finished watching the primitive hand powered lathe video. Absolutely gob-smacking the attention to detail. Respect.
I appreciate that Chris takes the time to get these things right. Each video has been a joy to watch.
"Now you're going to want to see me complete the project within a reasonable timeframe." - Clickspring ....... 3 years later
In all fairness, he took a break to write a damned dissertation and research paper on the mechanism
We're coming up on 5 years now...
@@cosmicrdt I’m here too, lol
@@cosmicrdt And yet we can't NOT get excited, and we're still here. :)
Still going!
Hey Folks, I'm back on deck for 2017 and we're off and running! I very much appreciate your support and encouragement with the videos, and I want to thank you for sharing them, it makes a HUGE difference to how much they get viewed - please keep sharing with anyone you think might be interested.
Re the build approach: I am aiming for maximum authenticity with the reconstruction, so I'm ruling out the use of any modern materials, including glass/acrylic etc for the final casing. This might sound a bit extreme, but I have a good reason for doing this.
By strictly adhering to the original artifact in all areas, we will all have a fantastic opportunity to do something that to my knowledge has never been done before with this device: To make a detailed examination of the problem solving of the first Engineers - all of the good, and all of the "less than good". The device is *packed to the brim* with engineering precedents that we all take for granted today. But there are also quite a few engineering decisions that went down an evolutionary dead end. Its essential that I keep everything authentic to ensure that we can all see why the good solutions survived, and the others were abandoned over time. This includes a wooden support structure. One way or another, the internals will be easily viewable at the end of the project, and protected from dust - it will just be using a method that is consistent with the original device.
Stay tuned, more on the way soon :)
Please use a acrylic clear cover instead of wood. May be later you can change to wood as well.
This is a great project,
All the best Chris
Clickspring hi Chris welcome back. so been looking forward to your new video , hope it all go well from elliott uk .
Hi, Chris. I love your videos. You're awesome. I hope you go into a lot of detail (both historical and mechanical) with this project. I would also love to see your decision-making process during the build step by step.
Clickspring I from Brazil and I been watching your channel more than a year, I like to help but money its quite short at the moment so I think I could Maybe transplante your videos to portuguese. Do you have i kind of Script you use in the make of your videos? If so I Would be glad to translate then tô subtitles for portuguese
Clickspring hey Chris I was thinking about your idea with the wood and brass pillars supporting the device and what if you used a more modern acrylic or maybe a glass or stained glass with different supports throughout or you could have something like small windows in the wood shell in key areas so you can see how the device is working and what's going on while it moves I love your videos keep up the incredible work
As an hommage to the original antikythera fragments an x-ray of your replica to compare it to the x-ray of the fragments would be so phenomenal !
Wonderful, I remember the shivers I felt down my spine when I first learned about the amazing research work that enabled mere mortals to understand how a corroded lump of melded, crusty old scrap was an ingenious and exquisite piece of the most sophisticated thinking and creation.
This is the best thing to happen to UA-cam! Culture, craftsmanship, relentless striving for beauty; you, Sir, are a worthy heir to the Greeks!
The Antikythera Mechanism is truly fascinating. It will be lovely to watch your work from four years ago.
A true benchmark for all youtube content. Absolutely premium! I've always been really fascinated by lathes and lathework, but seeing your carving techniques just blew my mind.
I wish I had discovered this series a few years ago. What a fantastic project.
Rbh I wish I hadnt discovered it yet so I could binge beginning to end it's such a great series
This is it. This is fucking it.
Man, my life has been so empty and futile without your soothing voice and machining erotica.
This is gonna be fucking *EPIC*
No worries mate, it will soon get lost in the vast sea of comments that every CS video brings.
Btw I hope those kids aren't the ones you are referring to in your channel description.
Chris does have the most mesmerizing voice in his videos lol
I think a little swearing in comments is the least of your worries, especially if your kid is mature enough to enjoy these videos, there is far worse in the supposedly kid friendly videos youtube's algorithms suggest to a lot of children.
It's just a word
So is "respect" trust me every 2nd word I say starts with a f ! I to share your enthusiasm, but sometimes you just have to hold back. If this was AVE 's channel I'd say go nuts
I was seriously impressed with the amount of detail and craftsmanship that went into your clock build..and now this??.. You've got to be a wizard or something to have this much patience and talent; not only in machining, but also in videography. You, sir, deserve every single subscriber you've gained so far and many millions more. I can't wait to follow along with all of your future projects.
I can't wait Chris. I wonder how come PBS or Nat Geo hasn't contacted you about making a series. Your content is more than worthy. Now off to Patreon help support the good fight :-)
Ha ha! Terrific to have your support Chris, much appreciated :)
Sarcasm?
0_o You must have been one of the viewers that gave this video a thumbs down.....
I don't think so. He was attacking PBS and NG, not Chris.
Exactly :-)
Must.......keep.......calm...!
Can't wait much longer .
Bites back of hand with excitement.
Love it Chris.
Absolutely stunning already! Can't wait for the series to continue. In awe at how much research you must of had to do before even starting to machine anything.
The day I heard about the original mechanism disproved most of the history I had ever learned - the day I discovered your series had the same effect on my ability to work with hand tools. I have learned so much from watching your videos including much from the tool building and metal work. Thanks for sharing all of this information and your skills - these videos are so well done, keep up the good work!!
This’ll be the third time I’m watching these videos through because I love the camera work, the editing your narration. But I don’t think I’m alone in thinking Adam savage should make the wood box. He praises you in numerous videos and he would absolutely make a case worthy of such a device.
Beautiful. Simply beautiful. There is so much value in your work.
You make such awesome videos! I am really excited to be along for the journey. This series will be epic. Cheers
Thank you mate, terrific to have your support :)
I'm in awe of the skill and craftsmanship of you and the original builder. Simply amazing to watch.
Lately in my life I have felt very empty and meaningless but now I came back to my passion, construction and creation. So I would like to thank you, Chris. Continue with the excellent work.
Cheers Thomas :)
Great to have you sharing your shop with us once again, Chris.
An ambitious project to be sure. Will certainly follow along as it progresses. Thanks.
I can barely come up with the words. You absolutely astound me. Thank you so much for sharing your adventures with us all in such exquisite form.
Absolutely thrilled by both of your projects, Chris! Good luck!
Hi! Im Greek and I livei n Greece, its amazing how our ancestors made all of these gears and parts without using any power tools! Im looking forward in watching every part of your build! I really like you video! its inspiring how you make everything from scratch!
I'm hyped for this series. I'm sure it'd going to be even more awesome than the skeleton clock. For the casing you may use plexi glass, it's easy to shape however you want, and you can see through it.
I'm really happy that you've given us a brief education on the antikythera. I'll enjoy the build all the more for knowing its significance!
Great introduction. hybrid version of the casing gets my vote.
There is one other UA-cam channel worthy of comparing this one with @foureyes woodworking for the quality of the end product but this is my favorite in all the millions of channels that there are. Thank you sir.
I'm more excited about this series than Star Wars!
The fact star wars finished before this says a lot!
It feels like ages from your promo videos of the new builds. I am looking forward to new videos so much. It's the greatest thing I ve been every watching. Please keep them coming
This is the coolest project i´ve ever seen on youtube. Thanks for that!
the production values in your videos are always astounding. Thank you for taking the time to make them for us.
You're a beast Chris!
I'm so excited for the new build. Cheers!
Cheers Andrea!
Yes Chris! I'm so excited and this seems like a fantastic challenge for you to do. Alls to ya!
You just know it's a good day when you see a new Clickspring video in your feed.
I haven't felt this excited about a series on UA-cam or anywhere else since you started the clock. Truly amazing!
Commenting to remind you to watch all the videos if you forgot.
The quality of your videos is just out of this world! Always a good day when you release a new video, thanks for the stunning content!
2:50 "Now you're going to want to see me complete the project in a reasonable timeframe"
That didn't age too well. Emergent research projects are too important!
Glad to see you back, however :)
I have just started watching this Amaizingly good video series for the... Actually I've lost count of how many time over the past few years. Thanks Chris, your videos are still my go to when needing to chill and see something of absolute beauty being created with incredible precision and narrated so eloquently, informative and insightful.
Absolutely awesome subject and consistently awesome videos. Best wishes
Hi Chris, welcome back! It'll be a big pleasure to follow your steps on building this machine as I did before with the clock. Can't wait for the next video!
This is going to be incredible! I've said it before, your videos are the best about engineering/modelmaking I've come across, and it's always a treat to see the latest one pop up in my subscriptions ;-)
Cheers Lindsay, terrific to have your support mate :)
;-) You've maybe seen it already, but have you come across Tatjana Van Vark's replica of the mechanism? She's a bit short on details, but has some nice photos - tatjavanvark.nl/antikythera/antikythera.html (Check out her other work too, like the Enigma machine, it's pretty neat!)
Thanks for all the hard work, Chris.
I like the columns. always thought Michaels wooden box to be something you would buy shoes in. maybe some greek carvings or bronze cast panels might do it justice. ive been thinking about this build, you have some seriously interesting machining to do, the spirals on the dial for a start. really excited to see how you tackle this! very exciting.
Its gonna be a hoot for sure Emma! Agreed on the box needing to be as delicate and pleasing as possible. I'm aiming for maximum authenticity throughout the build, so will likely go for the wooden casing suggested by the recovered artifact. There is some evidence that pillars may have been used in the construction process, and then subsequently removed and replaced with the wooden casing, so I think leaving some (or even all) of the pillars in place after the build is complete will sit ok too. Cheers mate :)
Well it`s only an idea, and I suspect your very far along or possibly even finished building it. The only possible and logical way to keep it as authentic as possible (which I agree with) and still properly display the internal workings as they should be would be to make two of them. :-) Clear plastic of any type used as a case on the exterior would cheapen the whole effort. Proper float glass at the minimum would be my vote. This should be an amazing build series and I`m looking forward to it very much Chris. Some interesting machining challenges in that for sure.
Oh my God, this is gonna be HUGE! I cannot find other videos as interesting as yours, these are just mesmerising to watch! Please keep going, I can't wait to see the rest of the construction ❤
This is going to be amazing!
When ever I get that notification of a new video from Clickspring I stop what I'm doing. When you where 1-2 videos from finishing your skeleton clock I was over in Italy for vacation and had to sit down and watch it.
I'm extremely excited to watch this series and can't wait videos! Thanks you for producing amazing content for everyone to watch.
Legend has it, this is where it all started.
Can't wait to follow you on this journey! Thanks for sharing.
Man I am really looking forward to watching these build videos! So interesting project. As a Greek I got the shivers with your intro! :)
I really love your attention to detail and my favorite part of your vids is when you apply the purple dye to the metal and start etching a part. BEAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUTIFUL!!!!
my UA-cam is broken! I can't give this more than one 👍
I really enjoyed your clock series and I'm really looking forward to this next set of videos. Thank you!
Dude, your production is top notch! This could easily have been made by the history channel!
Do R/C! At this point, that's kinda an insult.
Here we go again!! Super excited to see this beauty unfold.
The absolute worst part about Clickspring is also the worst part about most UA-cam channels: waiting for the next video.
WhiteKnight Leo hahaha it's part of the charm. otherwise it's gonna be like in the click movie with Adam Sandler
In our instant gratification society, I welcome the wait.
Well there would not be gratification if it was WHAAM clock is done. This way piece by piece u see details and slowly it turns into what it is. Depending on how much time you invest yes it's gonna take 2 years lol
I agree partly
Id rather a nice high quality 15 minute video every few weeks than a 5 minute rushed video each week
The genius involved in planning this machine is awe inspiring. I can't wait for this series to really take off.
Would something like a combination of the pillars and plexiglass be possible for the casing to enclose it but leave it visible? or would that detract from the overall quality of the build?
I'm aiming for maximum authenticity, so that rules out modern materials like acrylic and plate glass. I will likely go for the wooden casing of the original artifact + pillars in a hybrid form to open it up.Whatever display option I go with, its important to me that it be consistent with the evidence of the recovered wreckage.
lol xD guess that's a no on the glass i suggested in my own comment then
While Clickspring goes for authentic which is wood, you can of course substitute it with Acrylic if you build it yourself. Thats what i would do. And i would probably even add some lighting in there.
Plexi gets gooy.
Tempered glass? That would be great.
this must be the single most epic trailer that I have seen in any home workshop video. please keep up the great work and I wish you the most of luck with your build. cheers!
So glad Adam Savage recommended this!
Wow wow wow, I almost feel all tingly. The epicness of this project is unmeasurable.
Yaaaaasssss!!!!
It's soo good to hear your voice again :) Can't wait for future videos on this project.
Amazing series. Top notch. Landed here after listening to lecture on Antikythera mechanism in an Ancient Astronomy lecture series. Very helpful to understand what this machine looks like and fully appreciate the absolute beauty of it from a technological and technical capacity point of view. It points out how advanced human technology was in places on the earth in the ancient world.
I suspect that the original Antikythera machine is actually the one that we are about to see Chris build and it fell out of the time machine that he is bound to build at some point.
Chris, your machining talent is second to none. Your CAD/video abilities exceeds those of lucus film works.
+1 for open frame
jesus christ, the quality and detailing of this video is insane! absolutely stunning
my brain screams ACRYLIC but my heart wants to see a stylish hardwood case
Yup, its gotta be wood - a very special, highly figured, one of a kind cut of wood.
Perfect fit to your very special, highly figured, one of a kind videos
My god Chris, I'm thrilled to see this! I couldn't have picked a better mechanism to replicate!
If I don't see your name in the credits of the new Indiana Jones, I will be most disappointed with Hollywood as a community.
The work you are doing is fantastic, but even more how you are doing it: extremely well explained with a relaxing mood an voice. As a viewer you can even feel the quietness and the resulting precision and exactness. In addition I‘m deeply impressed by the photographic super quality with regards to lighting, framing, cuts asoasf.
I really am enjoying your videos in every aspect like peace of mind it gives me, learning about the depth of studies you are going into, admiring the craftsmanship, visually enjoying the images, increasing my respect for the greeks and their time period and so much more
Thank you so much for this extreme dedication and all the energy you are putting into this. I hope you are getting as much motivation, energy and joy out of it as you are generating for all of us!
Why don't you case the thing in glass so you can see it? I'd love to see you work with glass.
It’s been a year since I watched this, had to start it again- mind blowing work
i vote for naked... or else glass... make a single piece frame from cast glass ! because i know that you like difficult things... :P
Excellent subject ! thanks for sharing
but do not use plexiglass please, it's a cheap and ugly material that doesn't last, doesn't fit with your job
precision cut sheets of sapphire crystal.
a skeleton casing would be better.
Brilliant intro to your new series... I can hardly wait... and I am so exited to see all your explanations, suggestions and solutions for this grand project! Thank you so much for all the effort and time you are putting into this and of course for sharing it with us!
Couldn't you replace the outer case with a clear acrylic case? This would allow the project to be totally visible after completion.
See top post above :)
I still think it would be cool to be able to see the workings without the risk of damaging them, but it is your project and I stand by your decisions in the construction.
Clickspring Why not make two interchangeable enclosures-one that's original, and another that allows viewing of the mechanisms?
I don't think I've ever been so excited for a youtube series! Chris, best of luck! We all support everything you do and know that this will be worth every second put into it.
One of the things that occured to me when watching this was how special the people were that could appreciate such a device. People today have become so intellectually lazy, they could never appreciate the joy of understanding even how to read it.
The world needs more people like you. I think extremely smart, creative, giving, talented, selfless, and I could go on. I love you videos what hat they bring to an internet full negativity.
build the case in acrylic
Saw this in the sub feed and immediately watched it. Chris is back again and it makes me happy.
Be sure to follow up on the previous build to see how it it's going and how well it is also keeping time 👍
How the hell did they made this in Greece in 150 before christ.... Thats the real puzzle :)
What a challenging project!!! Cant wait to see the finished product
I am SO excited to watch this series. When you posted the teaser announcement a while back I lost it! I've always been facinated with the Antikythera mechanism. This is gonna be great!
It is really fascinating, the tool, the process and everything. thanks for the delight
hands down the best UA-cam maker channel by a mile! keep up the good work, this is TV quality content, I just love seeing one of your videos uploaded.
This is stunning.
And that was an understatement.
Before I get to what I want to say to you, let me tell you that I appreciate your videos--and your voice. Both are extremely soothing.
Now, let me thank you for the information in the description box. You went above and beyond with it. Transcript, links, credits, the whole 9. Thank you for being an excellent, excellent video maker.
So inspiring and beautiful. Projects, filmography, voice, choice of music, this is by far my favorite channel.
Let me say thank you for all the work that goes into this. It has been years since the last time I was this excited for something!
Fantastic intro to the project Chris! I am voting for the hybrid casing. I cant wait to see how you tackle this project.
So excited for the new series. Both of them.
I am so. Excited. To see this process happen!
Fabulous Chris! Very excited for the new series of videos. Thank you
Oh wow, I am so looking forward to this, just watching you make the temporary supports was great - loved the broaching.
Wow!! I'm so excited for the coming episodes!! Both projects are extremely interesting and I'm looking forward to the next episode!
Count me in.
I really enjoy watching you work.
Top shelf talent in building and photographing it.
Yours are by far some of the best videos on the web.
Thank you.
