Album Queen Elvis 1989
Location: Los Angeles
Many thanks to Andy at BigBeef.com for digitizing the VHS version of this clip.
I was working in a record store in Providence, RI, when this album was released. After hours, late in the evening, I’d often stop by the store after a night out and play this song and “Airscape” at full, enchanting volume. Both songs have enveloping arrangements with bass lines that need to be loud to be fully appreciated. RH is a master of melody, among other things.
I remember back in 1989 my friend Sid saying, "That kid is already cooler than we will ever be."
Andy Metcalfe is such an underappreciated bassist.
Great arrangement to this song. The piano brings so much to it. And the bass player on this album is just magnificent.
The first time I saw Robyn Hitchcock was during his Queen Elvis tour at the Boathouse in Norfolk Virginia. Saw the Soft Boys reunion show at the 9:30 club in 2001.
a shimmering prism of a melody, perfect for a song referencing light, colour, vision and changing perspectives.
First time hearing this song today and hit me like Freight Train. Music is life 🖤
probably the most insightful and best songs about unibrows ever.
I loved the album! This is one of my favourites!
One of my favorite RH songs.
one of my favorite songs!
The song has that quirky Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds vibe to it.
What a beautiful video
I’ve noticed that you are often on a telephone in your videos. Who are you on the line with?
Sad to say I didn't discover Robyn until 2008!!!! On the plus side though, I managed to get hold of about 25 CD Albums in a very short space of time :)
There are a few gaps in my collection though and I don't recognise this song, but as with lots of Robyn's work I like this immediately 👍 is it from an album I haven't got??
The album is called 'Queen Elvis' by Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians (1989 or thereabouts)
