The teaching now on coming down the whipping side is to keep his head between your legs but if you want to do it old school then with your knee lift his head and position your feet under his flanks, because most of the time you have more control as the sheep is just wanting to see what is happening and will be less prone to squirming and kicking with his head in the upright position.
This is the most useful footage of footwork combined with shearing pattern I have found so far. I think the only thing missing is an obvious orientation to the shearing tube - maybe paint a triangle on your shearing board with long edge parallel to orientation of your downtube? Can't wait to go out and see if I can get it right tomorrow!!
