How I fixed rough idle & misfire code P0302 + Where is PCM ECM ECU Computer on 2014 Chrysler T&C?

- *Update. Plugs, coils, fuel injectors, and Gas additives did not fix the Rough Idle, or the engine light on with code saying I had a #2 cylinder misfire. So I elected to do 1 more thing to see if I could fix it before heading to the dealer to spend way more than a person should. The ECU computer I figured, was being affected by heat, so I exchanged it for a refurbished, re flashed one from Flagship One. It instantly fixed my rough idle and the engine light has stayed out. This may not work for you, but it worked for me, so am happy about it, as this car is paid for and works well for carrying my aircraft and pulling my boat. After this change for me, I occasionally still get the misfire code, but I reset it and it goes for months at a time without a misfire. So not 100%, but better. I also found a new battery and cable ends helped as it needs to have good battery at idle to provide spark. If your headlights flicker at idle, you may also need a new alternator or regulator to help keep the voltage up enough to make a spark. Good luck with it. Thanks for watching and stay safe!

As an owner of a 12 Grand Caravan I found this video useful. I got the same misfire code and changed the spark plugs and coil packs and got no more codes. Thanks Mr. Herbert!
Yes. I thought I was done after changing the coil packs and plugs, but it didn't work for me, so had to take this next step which appears to be working really well. It idles better than it ever has. Thanks much, Mike.
Could a bad pcm be a reason for the car to not start at all?
@@josephgarza9377no crank, no start could be a battery that outputs only low voltage, starter relays, starter fuses. Test you battery then; You should be able to jump the starter from the relay box without crawling under the car. If that doesn't work, then remove starter, bench test it. If the starter is good, it's probably the PCM, which is last resort.
Dave I work on Chrysler's for a living and hats off to you for taking that on! I can tell you that I have seen my fair share of misfire faults on the 3.6 and it runs from coil to plugs to injectors to rocker arms to wiped cam lobes to burnt vales and broken valve springs. I have not replaced a PCM for misfire as of yet. Intresting to see if this is the long term fix. Just did a coil on one yesterday and a head last week. If you have to go deeper it gets costly. Good work!
Coming from a Pro like you, I really appreciate your comments. So far it is running and idling smoother than it has in a long time. It was 80 here yesterday and I let it Idle a long time, with no issues, so I think it was heat related. The car only has 79k on it, so I was not worrying about heads, or valves. Thanks very kindly.
I'm having #2 misfire also...Chrysler already changed the heads under warranty....I've tried switching coils didn't change the misfire on #2. I was thinking about changing the injector next
Hi Dave ....I’ve 2015 t&c 3.6 ( Nov 2014)have the same issue 302 code idle rough hesitated taking off full stop...change spark plugs/ coil #2 oem parts and intake gaskets “upper “ and pc valve as well....all that did not fixed the problem 🤦🏻♂️...my extend warranty just expired by 2000 miles ( now 77,000 miles).....not sure what to think next.....how you check the fuel injector.....then my next step is Head pressure test 🤷♂️....van drive strong and smooth on the hwy ...what do you think 🤔
ViperTech maybe you can help me out. 2014 T&C, 305 code. New coils & plugs and swapping them around and also swapping injectors around did nothing. Had a friends shop check my work and do compression check. All passed. Their lead mechanic did what he called a PCM/ECM reset by disconnecting the battery and shorting positive and negative cables for 15 minutes, to drain all power out of computer. Did nothing however after I left 3 miles down the road everything went to shit. Missing/skipping and bucking like a bronco, started throwing a bunch of new codes. I think that "reset" messed up the computer. Ordered a replacement from FS1 which still has the misfire on 5 but not throwing any other codes but also has no throttle control. FS1 says I need to do a throttle relearn which I can't find a procedure for and I believe is for if the throttle is not working properly, not for a completely non working throttle. It looks like my cyl 5 miss is caused by the head. Can this head, by the firewall, be pulled without removing the engine? I'm out of ideas
@@pilot61F believe it or not the misfire can be caused by a bad rocker arm. engine will have good compression and pass leak down test on all cylinders. the roller bearings fail in the rocker arm and it rolls off set and holds the valve open momentarily. One other possibilty is a broken valve spring. Now to answer your question, yes the head can be pulled in the van.The throttle body relearn requires a scan tool with reset capability.

Just ordered my pcm from FS1 before even watching your video. Hope it’s the issue because I’ve replaced every sensor and component you could think of. Fingers crossed.
Right on. I hope it works for you. Make sure you do the connectors right, as they are tricky. Not hooked up tight will cause errors. I occasionally still get the misfire code, but I reset it and it goes for months at a time without a misfire. So not 100%, but better. Fought with a "check engine" light on our 2005 Equinox for over a year.. Got a new gas cap from ########, and that didn't work. Friend finally said get an 'OEM' cap and try that... no more check engine light! Well done, Dave!
Yep, first thing I tried, but code reader kept saying misfire #2. No way gas cap would fix that sadly. Thanks much, Dick.
I think I might have the same problem. I have a 2014 Town and Country Van. The warning lights come on the dash and blinks of and on. Then the windshield wippers come on and won't shut of. I was told to find the comp. in the same spot as your van. then blow it out, put a heater blowing on it and the connections. This will get rid of the mildew I am told. What do you think???
Did you have the check engine light on when you replaced the computer?

Great video! Thanks

does anyone have a pcm wire diagram for this i have a p0882 code and want to run a relay off the trans module. but cant find a diagram anywhere!!
I've changed the injectors, plugs and swaped coils for the 0205/0305 problem on a 2014 Grand Caravan.. It occurs when the vehicle is hot. I want to try chilling the PCU with component cooler or ice pack to see if it clears the problem.
Any opinion on that?
I think that would be a futile act. Forget that idea. Trying to keep that cold. Sometimes my light still comes on, but after I reset it, it stays off for weeks sometimes, but yes, at idle. Doesn’t need to be programmed?
Mine didn't. It was already programmed.
Do I have to disconnect the battery terminals
I would. I only lost radio memory.
Thanks man for your feed back just got my computer today but it didn't do much lights just came on but not the angine I guess the computer wasn't programmed right to my van or vin number didn't match . So I'm hopping I'll get a refund for it 😜,

Could it be a fuel pressure issue ?

Nice video, very good details!!
Good morning! Thank you so much for the great information! Does this apply to the 2015 Chrysler 200?
I do not know, but am sure it can't hurt. Make sure to read the notes in the video description box and good luck. Thanks much.
My misfires were solved by replacing the thermostat.
It wouldn’t let the engine get quite hot enough.
Wow. That is great. Mine sometimes would come in even just sitting after starting up when cold. I still think is all has to do with low voltage at idle, as my lights flicker during idling and that is the only time the light ever came on for me.
@@NightFlyyer check your crimped connections on the battery terminals.
I soldered mine and that fixed the flickering.
@@donmartin7460 I replaced both cables, but still have some flickering. I thinks voltage reg or low output of alternator, but at this point it rarely comes on. I just reset it and forget it. Thanks.
Alternator

Great video, I went on the flagship one website to order the part and the part cost is saying $337.49. 😏. I have a 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan same problem.
Thanks. That sounds pretty high of a price. ???
PS, a low battery or a bad cable to ground can also cause this.

Did you have to take it to a dealer?
No. I did did the work myself.
NightFlyyer so the company sent you the Computer pre-programmed to your car?
@@justinbouy3153 Yes. The link is in the description box. It works perfectly and is actually updated.
@@NightFlyyer I wish mine work perfectly. The one they sent me has no throttle control and they are saying I need to do a throttle relearn which I do not have the diagnostic equipment to do myself.
@@pilot61F That really sucks. Sorry to hear that. I'm just a customer and guess I was lucky.
Who ever designed pcm location must been high in drugs when he designed it
Geez resetting the light wasn’t a repair. Who would have thought. Then replacing only 1 spark plug, then just guessing by throwing parts at it
Why am I watching this when you don’t know what your doing
Chrysler bulletin said it is was the Plug and/or the Fuel injector, or a warped head. I'm 75 and did all this starting with the most easiest. So I changed the fuel injector and the plugs. And all the rear plugs is difficult, and besides I did not get a warning on my OB tester that said I had misfires in all plugs, just #2. That did not work, so I did this.. and it worked. Geez!
Thanks for this video, it lead me in the right direction. Have a 2014 T&C with 190K. Rough idle - especially when cold, had P0301 misfire cylinder 1 and would not clear. Replaced plug, coil, rocker arms, performed compression test (in the event it was a valve leak, no audible tick), to no avail. I even got a Chrysler mechanic on JustAnswer and he told me it was the head - needless to say I was crushed - but soldiered on. I know this is poor science (doing more than one thing and not testing variables independently)... Here's what solved it for me: 1.) Carefully unplugged and worked ECM harnesses on and off several times as to re-seat in case of corrosion. 2.) Found every conceivable ground in the engine cavity and removed, wire-brushed and secured(there were three). 3.) Replaced the PCV valve (I doubt it had any effect, but you never know). 4.) Cleared OBDII codes - (basic and advanced). Running fantastic now, not a single miss or hesitation. My wager is on the electrical portion. Hope this helps someone, I've read if the upper end is taken care of and good PM practiced, that the lower end of a Pentastar can go as much as 500K before the timing chain fails. This is my new goal - lol.
Right on, and good on you. I also have stated in the video notes that "After this change for me, I occasionally still get the misfire code, but I reset it and it goes for months at a time without a misfire. So not 100%, but better. I also found a new battery and cable ends helped as it needs to have good battery at idle to provide spark. I just did the same with my Subaru sti that has a po302
My 2008 3.8L had a p0300, p0302, p0340 & p0344 code last year, and I replaced the plugs, wires, ignition coil, camshaft position sensor.....the misfire codes went away but it still ran rough and shifted hard. Last month it had issues starting up, and now this morning I got the dreaded p1607 code for PCM/ECM malfunction. I think its been the PCM all along. Fingers crossed, and feeling hopeful. Thx for your video
WOW. Well, lets hope this could fix it. I know that if those connectors on the Brain aren't connected just right, you can get all kinds of erroneous codes. Good luck and thanks kindly.
Those PCM plugs are overly engineered with cheapy parts. Make sure the backside where the wires are, are snapped in and lines up before pulling the lever. Those gears have to be synced with those slide rails. Thank you for the video.
It could be this or it could be sand and dirt in your fuel lines- check out this video I made on this if you have a misfire related check engine light. ua-cam.com/video/wx3tY0CDbjc/v-deo.htmlsi=ltVASqLL3L5LymyM
Excuse me sir but I have a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Model SE.i have a mis fire in my number 4 I also changed what you did and I have a rough idle also does my year and model carry this part that helped your van if you may know ?thank you for your time sir my name is Joseph
Same problem here, starts fine but after the shock is off I'm starting to feel the misfires from cil. 2. After it heats up further ~40 min of driving the cil. 2 misfires dissapear but cil 1 and 4 start to misfire apparantly from a coil signal issue (all backed up by VCDS reports) and of course I've changed spark plugs, and spark plug cables, coil pack, injectors, and harness verification all the way to ECM plugs.
Thank you for confirming my suspicions, I will try to add some thermal paste between the drivers inside the ECM to the aluminium case since it seems to be a heating issue. This method worked with a swirl valve actuator on a diesel engine
There was nothing electronic left for me to check, and all is good now. Hope your plan works for you.
Fantastic! It works like new, and looks like new in your video. Oorah, Dave, job well done.
Thanks a lot Bud! Semper Fi!

Thanks Dave . I’ve been having the same problem with my 2015 . Glad I checked .
Hope that was your problem too. I also found a new battery and cable ends helped as it needs to have good battery at idle to provide spark. If your headlights flicker at idle, you may also need a new alternator or regulator to help keep the voltage up enough to make a spark. Good luck with it. Thanks for watching and stay safe!
The pcm and ecm is the same part right? The code popped on my mother's 2012 town and country and says low voltage and it keeps draining the battery if i leave the battery hooked up
Howdy! Did you had to program the key fob? I ordered one ECM and TIPM from Flagship one. Sent vin number. Really Plug and play? When go to shop to ask for help, they confuse me trying to scare me about key fob programming
I had not problem with Key Fob. Everything worked great. Also note that an old battery that is low in charge, has those stupid Connectors, or a bad ground on the negative wire will also cause the misfire, as the voltage is too low at idle to fire the coils properly. Hope this works for you.
@@NightFlyyer That is good info too Dave. I just bought a twenty ten Dodge Caravan [keyboard numbers don't work lol] and it is rough on start up and also rough at idle. I will start with the battery... it only has seventy eight k miles... but I think original battery. Should I just replace the negative battery wire? or how do you check it pls? Thank youl
@@uber2tuber I know a Misfire will also happen with a bad battery and/or Cable. I changed the connectors on my cables. To see the ground cable, you must remove the battery and holder to get to it. If it looks corroded where it bolts to the frame, wire brush it. It was me, I would start with a new battery before switching out the brain. Mine still runs rough at idle, but I don't get the engine warning light anymore. Good luck.
So how did it go CSR? Did you have any issue with having to program a key or was it truly plug and play for you as well?
Hi ... I have a Dodge grand caravan 2013 ...and in have the same problem p0302 still showing up after we replaced spark plugs, coil, inyector .... Is not blowing smoke , dealer say Maight have a low compression ... Do you think I should replace the ECM? ... THANKS
Like I mentioned in the video notes, I still get the code only once in a while even after changing the ECM. I just keep resetting it. I know it only happens at idle on mine and I notice my lights flicker at idle, so am thinking an alternator or regulator. Some say low compression, but it is high as it is an E85 flex fuel machine, so I dont know on that one. But as long as it isn't blowing smoke, overheating or misfiring when driving, I drive mine and not worry. Good luck.
Oh Dave 😔
And do the pcms come pre programed so all i have too do is hook it up or do i need a computer too add the new vin
You all be very careful on ordering this part from Flagship.
I just ordered it put it in and the car turned on but when I pushed my gas pedal the car wouldn’t even Move the gears would change but I could not get no acceleration all bad be careful
That is what happens if the connectors aren't plugged in all the way.

Did you have to program the ecm?
No, I did not. It came programed for the car. After this change for me, I occasionally still get the misfire code, but I reset it and it goes for months at a time without a misfire. So not 100%, but better. I also found a new battery and cable ends helped as it needs to have good battery at idle to provide spark. Did u have program a key to it agian
I did not. The key's receiver is in a different place and not related. Good luck, but know this may not fix your problem. I think the idle is just a bit too low, as even now, every once in a while the engine light will come in when idling, but I just reset it and keep going, as it runs great.
Thank you, thank you. I would have looked for a week to find the unit. It was driving me nuts not being able to find it.
Hope it works out for you. Note also, at low idle, my lights flickered, so I changed the battery and cables to make sure there was enough juice to fire the plugs. Also a new alternator may be needed to fix that, if the battery does not fix. It is all quite the challenge for sure. Good luck.
Hi Dave, we have a 2016 town and country w/ 85K miles on it. lately my husband noticed that the idle is a little uneven. We're not getting any engine light of warning lights. Just the rough idle. Fuel economy is still ok (18 mpg w/ ac on and 23-35 mpg highway)
Still has original spark plugs. Any ideas on what he can do himself.
Well mine still has a rough idle. I would check the battery cables or the alternator. Some times at low idle, there is weak spark to the plugs, due to low voltage. Plugs can be changed and will probably help. It is not that hard. Good luck with it and be safe.

My husband replaced coil, spark plug and fuel injector and did not stop the misfire, he's looking to replace the pcm now. Did your van run fine for a while?
It still idles a little rough, and the light comes on only once in a while only at idle. I replaced the battery and cable battery connectors and that also helped, as the headlights were flickering at idle, telling me there was not enough spark, thus triggering the code. I can reset it and it will run fine for weeks. The alternator might be getting weak as well. This has been a tough one for sure. I have resigned to just resetting the engine light and just drive. If it gets worse, I might go ahead and change the alternator. Wish I could be of more help. Good luck with it.

Hello question my 2014 chrysler town and country is idling and the engine is like its shivering vibrating and rpm needle goes up and down a little I changed the spark plugs already what can be causing this can it he the brain
Well, It helped mine, but not 100%. I changed the battery and cables too, as I think the rough idling on mine may also be from such a low idle, the plugs do not get spark enough. Que fue tu solución?
Ojalá pudieras ayudarme.
Is the vehicle mileage stored in the PCU? Did you need to take any action to input the mileage?
The mileage is stored in the Speedometer, so it can't be tampered with. There was nothing else to do, but I think the best thing was changing the battery and cables, so more juice gets to the ignition at idle, but my fix was a culmination of all the things I changed. Sometimes the light comes on, at idle, but if I reset it, it will go for weeks with no problem. I think my alternator may not be working that great either at idle, because the headlights flicker, so I also figure, it is not getting enough juice at idle. But it drives fine, so check all before doing the PCU. Good luck.

Well mine still has a rough idle. I would check the battery cables or the alternator. Some times at low idle, there is weak spark to the plugs, due to low voltage. Plugs can be changed and will probably help and this computer would be the last resort. My light still comes on occasionally and if I reset it, it will be out for many miles, then sometimes come on when idling. It is hard to say, but I am still driving mine about 200 miles a week and it runs good...just idles bad. Good luck with it and be safe.
The new part 100% will need to be reprogrammed to the car, It is not plug n’play
Mine was programmed (FLASHED) at Flagship one. It plugged right in and worked fine.
@@NightFlyyer got mine from eBay programmed , $125 total
@@racingdreamz8021 Then why did you say it needed programmed (Not true) in your first post?
@@NightFlyyer Because people will go out & get one used & think you can just plug it in……You cannot
@@racingdreamz8021 Right on. Your comment implied it was this one that needed programmed, not a junk yard one. I never suggested a junkyard one anyway.
How did you reprogram the computer?
It came already flashed for my car.
In my experience, on properly maintained vehicles, these dang misfire codes are RARELY fixed by replacing plugs, coils and fuel injectors. I have to wonder how many perfectly good plugs, coils and injectors have been tossed by ppl trying to chase a misfire code.
If you're only having issues when it's hot out i wonder if there might be something with your MAF or IAC.
Back in the day you could simple turn a screw to slightly increase idle which seemed to resolve a lot of idle misses and rough idling in general. These newer cars you need a bi-directional scanner to increase the idle. Or leaving the AC on sometimes increased the load and RPM enough to smooth things out.
Hello, I would love to know how you got that part for half price ?
At this date 10-16-21 the price is double that $364.49
Unfortunately we cannot afford to do this repair with the price doubled.
Great video and would never have thought to change this component to fix the issue.
I think the best thing was changing the battery and cables, so more juice gets to the ignition at idle, but my fix was a culmination of all the things I changed. Not sure why the price doubled. Thanks.
I got mines just order it today for 180$ and I have the dam I change coils to plugs took it to a shop they told me rocker arms but mine don’t tick loud and I only have 60,000 miles on it they want 2500 to fix my head I think I’ll spen 180 first before I spend 2500 thanks for dis video I hope mine work maybe I’ll make a video of my own to show others people how it work for me wish me luck from Oahu Hawaii
Sounds like an expensive gamble to me
Still Cheaper than a dealer by a long shot.
