As a Tuscan-native guy i totally agree with Peter, 100% Sangiovese are the real "supers" The chianti classico or chianti "normale" here is usually called "annata" which is directly translated as "vintage" because it has no other mentions other than the vintage. We use "annata" to be polite because "normale" or "base" can be associated with the lowest quality. There is another level over the "riserva", it's called Gran Selezione, it has more ageing than the riserva nad is usually made from the selection of the best area and grapes. The "fiasco" for the gran selezione is also forbidden. The wine #2 and #5 are actually from bolgheri, which has a totally different production style from the chianti region. I've been in Sassetta Terme multiple times and i totally recommend it, the guys who runs the Terme were my classmates in the sommelier class in Livorno, they are also wine producers and they often do tasting in the terme in the evening! If you want to visit Tuscanyor maybe just try some other wines from the region, please DM me for some wine related advice, my girlfriend and i are sommelier and wine lovers so maybe we can arrange some tasting with the marvellous producers of the region :) PS: Never soak the cantuccino in a quality vinsanto! That's a tradition here in Tuscany, your friend is totally right, but is usually for the low quality vinsanto :)

I am italian and for years I refused to drink sangiovese. It is true that here is considered an ordinary wine, especially coming in a fiasco o fiaschetta format :D nevertheless, I am now going to end this tradition treating myself with a chianti riserva this weekend. Thanks peter
lol, it can be ordinary if an amateur made it. I make wine from sangiovese grapes every year, here in california from 30 year old vines that produce a really big dusty and massive wine, absolutely undrinkable for a few years thats how acidic and tannic and big it is. Comes out like nebbiolo in that it needs time to settle down. I have learned patience from working with it, I have less troublesome grapes like cabernet franc in my vineyard as well though so that its not all difficult grapes.
That was the most happy I think we've seen Peter lol. I feel like you should random add some sangiovese to future tastings just to cheer him up a bit lol

Nice video; 2016 was such a good year in Tuscany! Those old fiasci made good candleholders. A few years ago in Florence, I decided to try a different lampredotto each day for lunch; the first day, I had the lampredotto in the market and it was SO salty I stopped with that one!
The original Chianti recipe made by Baron Ricasoli in the 19th century included two white varieties in addition to Sangiovese and Canaiolo: Malvasia and Trebbiano and the must was subjected to a refermentation that produced fresh wines not suitable for aging. The market demanded this type of wine and producers adapted by using glass flasks embellished with straw. Obviously, due to the presence of white grapes, the wine did not have much stability and in a short time it spoiled. In 2005 the new Chianti disciplinary excluded the use of white grapes.
