How have only 16K people watched this so far?!? Tariq makes such worthwhile observations. More folks should share it with their peers. Thank you for what you keep doing Tariq!

you only hear what you want ot hear. It's simple : a non-white person speaking of trump in a different way messes with their worldview.
It's like a hispanic or a black libertarian.

"Nothing that has happened has made me change my view." Same here. Back in 2015, I said I would support a candidate that I wanted: anti-war, healthcare for everyone, no student debt, etc. So that's what I did. I voted for Jill and voted for Greens I liked at state and local too. I'll support people who I would like to shape government policy. :)

Me too. I look forward to that. I appreciate Tariq lots but I think he jumped in a little too soon on this. The possibilities Trump represents are stunning. What the creature himself is doing today ( 12.03.16 )with it is frightening. I never expected anything different from him.

Dear Tariq, your heart is in the right place but I am surprised you called this one so badly. Yes definitely the system can be blown up, to some degree, and he has done that but that is where any praise for Trump must end. As you know there are similar precedents.
It is now 25 days after the election and it is more than clear that Trump IS ABSOLUTELY beholden to wall street and the predatory fascist capitalistic system ( just "Good Business" per Mussolini ) than even the most aggressively neoliberal Democrats or Republicans. Those laggards were simply not deceitful or immoral enough to try to pull off what Trump has pulled off and now unfolds - just exactly as many of us already knew. Is the country a bunch of stupid uninformed reality show voters? 'You betcha.' What Trump did makes the Clintons look like 4th rate incompetents. And of course the more Trump unfolds his baldly predatory process of appointments (not exactly a plan) the more the Clintons and Obamas bask in the light of self appointed moral righteousness. Military aggression? He has now appointed a number of the crafters of the Project For The New American Century - the most militant collection of toxic swamp creatures ever known in the US. There is and will be more and it ALL will be privatized exactly as in Paul Ryan's wet dreams. Sure this is a good opportunity to criticize sitting officials and that is due them in full. But you jumped in a bit too soon on the shining beauty of Trump.
Yes there is a desperate need for a third party in the US. I think of that as The Second Party.

Thank you Tariq. One of the great thinkers of the European left Tariq Ali providing a tonic to the firewall of propaganda coming from the liberal/establishment press. An analysis intellectual substance. You arent forgotten in Scotland for the support you gave to the grassroots independence movement. You need to be giving your wise council to Sturgeon who seems to have lost her way in backing Clinton.

Peter Hitchens and Tariq Ali on Castro's legacy - BBC Newsnight - Never heard of this guy or heard anything from his lips and I am a staunch anti-socialist but there are two sides of the brain that will never get on and I listened to this man, fully took in what he had to say, liked what I had heard, didn't agree with it but the temperament and orator skills made it a pleasure to discern

Yes, one can attempt to predict and analyse post hoc voting patterns but I prefer to look to history for guidance; America has always been split between the mainstream parties [working primarily for elites eg Wall St], and the lower classes, who occasionally find a leader, or simply avoid politics [40% did not vote], ie its always been the rich [mainstream parties] oligarchy and everybody else [sometimes appealed to by populists]. Trump posed as a populist, but its become clear by February 2017 that his government is not populist, but a kind of right wing elitist [cowboy clown]. There are many in Congress and statehouses that are cut from similar cloth.

In other words...Tariq Ali saw Clinton as the "greater evil" than Trump. In his defense, this WAS made on Nov.9th. I'd like to get his opinion now that Trump's cabinet picks are becoming apparent.

But... Isn't Trump himself also a Neo-Liberal capitalist? He may not be with the Establishment but he's a self-made capitalist. Why would anything change in terms of social equity/justice?
BTW... Instead of always talking about the unsuccess of Siryza or Podemos, bear in mind that in Portugal, the left has won. It's in power and resisting the EU bureaucrats and loan sharks.

Not to mention in the face of a "Do Nothing" Congress obstructed by a Republican minority in the Senate and the majority in the House.
The same "white working class" that elected Trump to fix the problem, were the same white working class that elected Reagan, both Bushes and the Tea Party Republicans with their neoliberal policies to government.
They were the ones who lived in "right to work" states and fought against unions. They were the ones who took jobs from companies who relocated from unionized states and wanted to pay workers less with fewer benefits. These were the same people who told Democrats to become more like Republicans in order to start winning elections. "God, Guns, and Gays" was their mantra. They were the same ones who cheered on neoliberal policies, so long as they were being implimented in other countries.
But now, when it hits their counties and states, and they see the real face of capitalism, it's Obama's fault for not being the change they SAY they wanted but really didn't.

Trump did two important things. No TPP and no war with Russia (one hopes) then he paid attention to the working class although his only use for them is to offer the narcissistic supply he so badly needs. Clinton didn't deign to mix with the rabble. The previous Clinton administration destroyed the American working class. Either way we were going to get a narcissistic neoliberal administration and more austerity. Bernie would have won. Clinton could not possibly win and it wouldn't have been much if any better or different if she had won.
