When motors get locked up due to the rust, hobbyist on the Chasing Facebook Group would use WD-40 to unlock them. And even though it avoids warranty to use silicone spray, a lot of Mini owners use Q8 silicone spray to keep their motors rust free and running smoothly. I use the Liquid Wrench brand which is supposedly safe on plastic and rubber gaskets, I used it on my old Geneinno T1 and worked fine. I have a Chasing M2 on the way.
And yeah, what you're pointing out is a big problem, how the saltwater sits and sand in certain places within the motors and with time, everything oxidizes and rust with time, then stuff becomes like sand paper and locks up. Chasing and these other underwater drone companies "need" to come out with their own silicone spray that doesn't avoid the warranty and can extend the life of the motors tremendously.
I'm sure you're running the Mini in a bath tub for 20 minutes afterward a dive to get rid of the saltwater?
It's always good to record a video or photo, when taking something apart, that way you know how it looked before or even tag the parts.
Mini has the smoothest video footage, just needs replicable batteries or longer battery. Chasing is coming out with a "Mini S" that will be equipped with a claw, sd card slot, and better battery in April supposedly. Maybe sand those tabs down on the reel with a dremel tool.
All a learning process man, it's a new hobby, thanks for sharing. I wrapped my T1 up in some rope twice at the marina, had to take it all apart, get most of the remaining thread out of the motors, what a pain. Now I've very careful when navigating around poles or pilings... lol What's nice about the Mini is how easy it is to work on, the Geneinno T1 on the other hand, a lot harder and has styrofoam all over the insides that falls apart when opening it up.

Hey Eternal Angler, great comments. I checked out your channel: great content! Yes I do run the mini in the bathtub everytime but really the only way to get the sand out is to take apart the motors or you can run them and then buy new ones which I'm glad Chasing lets you do.
Interesting that people use WD-40 because it looks like a cheap epoxy paint over the inside which will eventually get sand and salt and will corrode. Even the silicone. But I think the wd-40 or silicone would displace water which is good.
It is definitely a learning process especially out in the ocean when the currents are ripping it is very hard to keep the drone over the boat and get footage before you run out of tether.
Definitely fun I'll be doing more soon! This weekend I plan all day.

@@franklindmurphy I just checked the directions of the M2, they want me to let it sit in a bathtub for up to 1 hour after using in saltwater, then spin the motors for at least 10 minutes.
Yep, it seems to be that way doesn't or they start to rust and corrode, wonder how the M2 will be. I'll have to keep it away from the bottom! Someone recently posted on the Chasing Facebook Group how they had to unlock two of the motors on the M2 by using some WD-40, hard to say if that was from salt or sand though.
Yeah, probably where having a boat or kayak comes in handy, but even then you probably have to anchor and you're limited on the tether. But definitely get to some deeper points on the lake or ocean with a boat versus the shoreline. They do make a longer tether for the Mini now I think, 200 meters.
      Looking forward to the footage!

Have you attempted to fix the motors that become corroded? I got my dremel tool out and made some progress but not sure if it’s worth it. Probably need to repaint the inside too. Thanks for this video. I wish I had watched it sooner!

    Great video.
I didn't know that these motors needed so much care. All 5 of mine are seized up. Used 3 times in the waters of Narragansett bay, RI, I rinsed the whole thing thoroughly, but never took it apart.
    Would dielectric grease be advisable?

I think any grease would be good I started using 2-4-C and it still needed help. I think the best thing and easiest was to spray silcone lubricant or something like that into the motors after you washed out. It didn't matter if salt or fresh was in the motors, just merely having water in between the stator and the prop would rust and seize. I have since retired my Gladius Mini and will look into another brand that doesn't have this problem but I haven't made a decision yet on which one. Good Luck!

Hi Frank.. is there anyway we can substitute the new anti -stuck motors for the regular ones of the gladius mini ?

    • @franklindmurphy
      @franklindmurphy  3 роки тому

That is a great question. I don’t know if they would fit. I have not opted to buy the M2 yet to see but if you blow out all the water from the motors with an air compressor, the Gladius Mini motors will last a really long time. As long as you don’t have sand in them.

How much did you pay for the new motors? Waiting on a quote but no idea if it's going to be tens or hundreds

    • @franklindmurphy

They were $25 bucks each. I ordered a whole set.

@@franklindmurphy Brilliant ta, that's a bit cheaper than I was expecting. Did they come as a complete thruster unit or just the motor on it's own?

I fucking HATE this drone. I’ve spent nothing but more money on fixing it. Complete black hole.
