Easy Way To Drill Holes In Steel

  • I have found that using a annular cutter to drill holes in steel up to 1/4 inch thick is the fastest and most accurate way. Although the tool can be more expensive than traditional drill bits, they are far superior in most cases. Well worth the investment!

nice vid - one tip: when using annular cutters like these (also the ones used in mag drills) the bit will last approximately three times longer if you simply grind the hardened mill scale off the hot rolled steel where the cutter starts. (cold rolled, no problems) - also remember to use a bit of cutting oil on these high speed steel bits.

It actually binded in the video and what do you know, he still has his fingers. It's probably belt driven with a weak motor or maybe has the belt set loose. Don't assume a man doesn't understand his tool, and we all take risks when we are willing to accept the consequence. He's not risking his life, and if he was, well that's where natural selection comes into place.

I liked your video and hope you keep making them....but...."YOU" have a responsibility to your viewing audience to teach and practice safety. AvocaSingleTrack made a valid comment and I support him in expressing it. It's your fingers, but I hope you never lose them !!!!

I assume they are HSS but unsure if the cutting tips are carbide, if not would not carbide tipped teeth be a worthwhile improvement ?
BTW don't want to be unduly picky, but use workpiece clamps & use coolant/lube for better life.

Thanks for the vid, that's really impressive. Searching online now.
You're obviously more experienced than me but it freaks me out that you don't clamp that down and holding with no gloves. I realise that some metal workers don't use gloves as they can get caught, but you really should clamp it right?
Drill presses have insane torque and if that catches it'll rip your hand to bits! I know someone who permanently lost the use of a finger doing exactly that. I've almost had the same happen just with the battery drill. Also, it'll cut faster and bits will last longer with some cutting fluid.
Awesome video though and I appreciate it. Pease look after yourself lol

I have many hours of putting large holes in thick metal with Rotabroaches (annular cutters). As far as I know, about 5" in diameter and 3" deep is as big as they get. Hougen makes some pretty cool mag drills for pushing these types of bits. Oh, and a water based oil will works great at getting the most mileage out of them.
