nice vid - one tip: when using annular cutters like these (also the ones used in mag drills) the bit will last approximately three times longer if you simply grind the hardened mill scale off the hot rolled steel where the cutter starts. (cold rolled, no problems) - also remember to use a bit of cutting oil on these high speed steel bits.
hmm, cool tip thanks! funny thing is i was just drilling a hole with one through mill scale as you commented. i will try grinding the next one. thanks!
It actually binded in the video and what do you know, he still has his fingers. It's probably belt driven with a weak motor or maybe has the belt set loose. Don't assume a man doesn't understand his tool, and we all take risks when we are willing to accept the consequence. He's not risking his life, and if he was, well that's where natural selection comes into place.
REDNIC79 ....VERY CUTE DUDE...BUT...good working technique and shop safety is #1 and you are setting a poor example for beginners who are watching your video. Old fabbers know better novices do not. I liked your video and hope you keep making them....but...."YOU" have a responsibility to your viewing audience to teach and practice safety. AvocaSingleTrack made a valid comment and I support him in expressing it. It's your fingers, but I hope you never lose them !!!!
Nobody has challenged his right to express his opinion. I simply don't agree. Common sense is one of those things that can't be fixed when it's broken. Should he tell them to make sure their shoes are tied when they are walking up to the drill?
Bob Ordewald true enough....i just like these for one shot holes in thin stuff...thanks for the comment! sorry for the slow reply, i was on a canoe trip
I think the annular cutters can go up towards 3inch.. I’ve seen 70mm cutters that can go 100mm deep. They are made by rotabroach and have carbide tips braised onto the cutting edges.
Thanks for the vid, that's really impressive. Searching online now. You're obviously more experienced than me but it freaks me out that you don't clamp that down and holding with no gloves. I realise that some metal workers don't use gloves as they can get caught, but you really should clamp it right? Drill presses have insane torque and if that catches it'll rip your hand to bits! I know someone who permanently lost the use of a finger doing exactly that. I've almost had the same happen just with the battery drill. Also, it'll cut faster and bits will last longer with some cutting fluid. Awesome video though and I appreciate it. Pease look after yourself lol
I have many hours of putting large holes in thick metal with Rotabroaches (annular cutters). As far as I know, about 5" in diameter and 3" deep is as big as they get. Hougen makes some pretty cool mag drills for pushing these types of bits. Oh, and a water based oil will works great at getting the most mileage out of them.
+brainfarth cool thanks, i've never tried the water based stuff. sounds like a plan. some of those big ones must me fairly gnarly to watch cut through a big piece of steel.....very cool
+userwl2850 Had to google trepanning and only came up with this: In ancient times, holes were drilled into a person who was behaving in what was considered an abnormal way to let out what they believed were evil spirits.
I need to drill a one inch hole in the steel frame underneath an RV, so can't use a drill press. Have you tried this with a hand held drill? Is it possible to hang on as this goes into the steel?
Need a close up to show exactly the type in use. I assume they are HSS but unsure if the cutting tips are carbide, if not would not carbide tipped teeth be a worthwhile improvement ? BTW don't want to be unduly picky, but use workpiece clamps & use coolant/lube for better life. Finally what RPM were you using. Thanks
TY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!REDNIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! now if you could steer me towards a drill press/brand THAT'S GOT UNDER 200 SPEED FOR UNDER $350.00 , YOU'LL BECOME MY NEW DIY GOD! LOL
could always try and run a cheap one on one of these... www.amazon.ca/MLCS-9410-20-Amp-Router-Control/dp/B001NIK6PC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501029046&sr=8-1&keywords=router+speed+controller
Thanks for the video! I know it is from quite some time ago. But, was wondering the brand you are using. I can't seem to find small any with a small arbor. 🇺🇸
mag drill broach ,,,, use a clamp , and some cutting fluid , the broaches will last longer , so will your fingers , and a slightly lower speed , less heat.
+tjsnordic I agree, Working with machinery is no joke. He should have secured his stock. Good way to slice your hand open or take a finger off. If you are going to make you tube videos, do it responsibly.
They last fairly well, as long as you are nice to them, which i am not..... i have 2 sets now. One for butchery, one for precision stuff. They last longer than my drill bits do. They all have lifetime warranty for breaking
Thanks for sharing. Would these work with a regular old Dewalt cordless drill? I'm without a drill press or a mag. I wouldn't be doing anything thicker than 1/4 inch mild steel.
work fine by hand, just have to be careful as the bit first starts cutting that it does not walk all over the work piece. i use the same drill all the time
Please do us all a big favour and ignore the nutters that make idiotic comments.I enjoyed the vid.,was greatly enlightened by it and thank you for sharing.I am much obliged Sir.

most people in a home shop dont have a big enough drill press or a mill to run 1" and bigger trist drills.. speeds only go so slow and you cant increase feed if it just stalls.. these along with step bits might not be as accurate or quick as a good twist drill but theyre the only option unless you have a monster mill to plunge in big twist drills

Been waisting 3/4 bits on 3/4 metal beams for the past month, thank goodness I
Finally decided
To check an easier method.
Cobalt bits last 5 times longer than titanium and and fairly cheap
Great work! we sell these in the UK and your video really highlights the advantages of the Mini Cutter 👍
This was a good real-life demo. Most of us don't have the tools handy so we just hold the work real tight.
Dear lord please clamp your work piece down. if that binds, you're losing a finger ! Great vid and thanks for showing the annular cutters !

hehe, nice. and yes! you win! I can grab the chuck with my hand and stop it, loose belt.

REDNIC79 anyone with a big ass drill press is not a novice. It wasn't a safety training video and each man has to think for himself on safety.
Use oil. They will last longer! A sharp twist bit does very well provided you know how to sharpen the bit. This is a bit of an art....

+brainfarth happy new year. look at my videos I have a few that show it on a bigger scale.

This is actually quite amazing. I'm really glad I came across this video! Thanks for sharing this with me. :-)
Les Mack yeah they work great! glad you enjoyed it
Hello can you share the link for the drill bits
do you think this will work on angle iron? i've got lots of bed frames and I always need lots of metal brackets. Let me know and great video!
works on most steel, unless super hardened ...bed frames no problem

Blair Rota broach

Annular cutters are great but scary the way you hold your work.
I was just thinking the same thing. I was waiting for the stock to spin around like a lawn mower blade.

Oh wow.
These things are amazing.
Where the heck do you find one compatible with normal hand drills? Post a link?
blair rotabroach
what company do you used?
haven't seen in the comments yet so I'll ask. hope long do these last for you. I'm going to start needing stuff like this soon is why I ask

I don't see how that's any better or worse than a regular drill bit. Isn't it still a good idea to use some lubricant and to clamp your work down?

Thanks for the video, I was searching for something like this. What drill press are you using if you don't mind me asking?
I need a half inch can't find them local smh
Been trying to find a set like this for ages. impossible or id need a special drill press or milling machine.
How do you attatch it to the drill press?
I need to drill holes half way thru the base thickness. Can you advise? Thanks.
I would just use a regular style drill bit for that. use a drill press with a depth stop to adjust you depth
how deep is the deepest i could drill a 25mm precision hole through steele .. do you think 100mm is possible ?
No. I don't know how deep you can drill with this, perhaps 3/8". It's cup shaped so the bit will bottom out,
Can These be used in ar plate?
how many hole can it make before replacing?
this can work on copper material.I have to make plug for copper connecter which have 18 mm bore and 10 mm material remain inside the hole .
it's called a core bit, and they have been out for years .at least 25 that I've been using them for my mag drill.there is nothing better.
Where can you buy a 5/8 cutter
Where did you get this drill set from?
I want this drill bit set
Thank you
Thank you.
No oil?
Why no cutting oil????
how about 5" diameter into 1/8" alum plate. we need something that wont burn the finish on the plate too?
kevykev913 is say it should work fine if you can find one that size
thanks, I will pass along the info to our guys and let you know how it works out
Nice
Where can i get this tool?? Thanks.
+manuel rivera you can buy them all over, just google them
I want to drill a 1 in hole in 14 inch steel . I hope I can buy the 1 inch bit by itself.
how much power does the press need to do this and up to 1.25" cuts?
1/2hp drill press? not a crazy amount anyhow
use lubricatng fluid.........will last longer
so we're do i buy these at?
there made by "blair" and called annular cutters
thanks
or if you already have a mcmaster account www.mcmaster.com/#4093a81/=15ybt9g

Don’t clamp your work pc. Always enjoy work related accidents.
You never showed one of those cutters close up... I'm not convinced you aren't just using hole saws and calling them annular cutters.
Do you mean to say drilling holes with bits is boring??
lol
Yeah, the hole thing is a real bore.
i can do that with a sharp twist drill
👌
Annular , spit weld drill
congratulations you discovered what a rotabroach is..........
oil
don't you need lube?can you re sharpen like the video bob
Cutting oil unless you wanna spend another hundred !!!
