I think this is one of my favourite tracks on the album. The way panning is used so effectively, and so is gating and compression. I like how the drums are so head-bobbing hip hoppy, and the way it switches the (awesome) melody around a couple of times (e.g. at 3:14) is great. Going for a walk while listening to this, I felt almost as though I was floating up into the air, sort of weightless. It's happened with a few other tracks too; specifically Prac-F and Bladelores. Awesome.
The spatial qualities of the first 40 seconds or so is astounding. Listening on a very small set of computer speakers and these audio dancers are twirling all around the environment. Will have to listen in headphones...
More specifically, they are the product of aliens. Aliens who program computers to make music. The computers then become self-aware and decimate the alien race that created them. In doing so, no other organic sentient being can hear and appreciate their music, thus making them obsolete. In a final and desperate attempt, the malevolent computers of alien origin, synthesize and bring to life a group we know today to be 'Autechre' as organic sentient beings who can appreciate the artificial music they program. Many planetary orbits pass and all is well; until a computer virus spreads violently and ravages Planet cHk90-q. Knowing this to be the end of their existence, the computers of alien origin send Autechre in a capsule to Earth. The group now simply share the songs of their creators to a naive group of organic sentient beings who can then in turn appreciate as well.
Listen to Untilted if you haven't already! LCC, Ipacial Section, Pro Radii, and The Trees might be my 4 favorite songs by autechre entirely, it is a force of un-nature.
My favoruite ae album! Saw them live and asked for autograph in backstage. Recieved huge autographs with mountains and stuff drawn by both of them on the silver cover paper of the CD
I can picture a row of miners heading underground, and then breaking the earth apart in sync, the beat hits slow and heavy like their tools against the bedrock
Everyone was talking about stereo and stuff and i didn't notice anything, then i realized midway through the track that i had set my phone to mono,,,,, 💀💀
Zegra47 "who cares?" The musician in me cares. The explorer in me. When I am in my studio recording sounds then mangleing and processing them it's not some boring "analytical" reality. That is when I'm going to other worlds the more the sound/s changes the deeper down the rabbit hole I go. It's an exploration not only in technique but art and imagination. It's also an exercise in discovery and honing of skills combined into one extremely fun, curious, and creative process...
People would rather be lulled to sleep by music than have any degree of analysis.. acting like it 'should' sound a certain way, coming with expectations and not getting them and labeling it as weird or whatever. 'Where are the words'.. 'This isn't music'.. 'This isn't art' - Art has no rules, despite what the popular minded minions think due to their conditioning. Breaking from that box and discovering the world of the underground will enlighten you more than any formulaic radio nonsense ever could. That is all.
Yo! I play classical & jazz guitar, and also make some electronica on the computer. So, you are right when you say Autechre enthousiasts tend to be interested in making music. Same for a lot of challenging music like free jazz. What striked me in your original comment was: " I'm studying the sounds I hear and thinking about how they acheieved them rather than listening for simple rhythmic enjoyment". Ok now let me tell you. When I listen to music, I am first and foremost a spectator that is here for a ride. Sometimes I can look behind the scenes and start to notice things like "oh this is a Fmaj7" or "they used that FX". It's ok to do so but if I do it too much and forget to play my original role which is the one of a spectator with suspension of disbelief, I risk loosing the spirit of the tune; my "emotional receptors" start to shut down to make place for analytical focus. And this isn't the purpose of music in the first place. Music shouldn't be for musicians. If I do a track, I don't want people to say "wow nice use of the DR910x whatever EQing echo"; I want them to be enjoyed & touched in new ways. I believe the way you care about sound studying is very important for musicians but the other road which is opening your spirit to the music to the maximum is even more vital. The sounds you listen go through your inconcious and rise up again in your music later; and your being is the filter.
Agree, when I wrote that, 4 years ago, I was heavily into sound design and in that frame of mind when I commented. Little did I know it would get so many people in an uproar. Yes one can enjoy it for whatever reason. I was making an assumption about autechre in particular as they really are into sound design themselves and it comes across in their art/music. They don't follow typical genre song compositions which made me think a lot of their fans may be musicians be cause most people won't listen to music w/out a typical structure let alone without lyrics. Never meant to come off as some elitist musician just a thought in passing when written. Thanks for all of the respones...
Many years after, but I'd like to add that I do listen to music in the last ten years with an analytical method in order to understand and learn to develop my own music, but is that analytical experience the one that makes all the different emotions or places that music puts me in to tend to be enhanced or be felt more strongly or deep. And one of the things I like the most about Autechre is that when you start analyzing their music you forget completely about synths as a "nerd" and focus more on sounds and production itself, rather than "woo dude, listen to that prophet 5", as they use mainly max msp and found sounds. You go straight to the point, which is the music itself.
Como me gustaría que vengan a la Argentina... pero eso es algo complicado creo... En este pais debe haber muy pocos fans de Autechre para un show en vivo...
I suspect the indside out, head-hurting thing in this track is from mixing parts out of phase, which often gives this odd sensation of pressure inside one's head
Excellent, thanks for the recommendation, will check it out.Have heard some Tipper stuff before and quite liked it, not heard this album though. Thanks again.

You are not smart or have some heightened sense of understanding if you listen to autechre, its just shit.
know what you mean :) there is a lot of confusing elements in their production lately, or since untilted? duno. but this for instance is a realy interesting track. the ting is that we used to listen to it as kids... now I'm almost 30 so it's a bit hard do get into it. but each album was also a chalange back in the days. the question for me is what the hell is in the music/structures/noise that keeps people return to it over and over? they are one of the kind
Klistern2 You really couldn't be more wrong. Art is inherently subjective. If you don't find much value or enjoyment out of it, is anybody forcing you to listen or comment on the video? Why are you here? Killjoy much? Saying anything is "shit" as an objective statement is insanely stupid

SO good! The rapid thumping of the bass drum between 3:33-3:36 is so badass. Gave me goosebumps.

The fuckest track on the album. Absolutely badass.
