I've been shooting seascapes for over 20 years and published a book on it in 2014. Over the years I have learnt a great deal about how best to approach this amazing genre of landscape photography and in this, and the next 2 videos I hope to share some of that inspiration with you.

I would say the same goes for Forest/Woodland photography … chaotic woodlands and the weather and wind.

I love the dynamic nature of seascapes …. Always changing, always new opportunities, and different shutter speeds can completely change the mood.

Always time well spent watching your videos, Alister. I love seascape photography because I love being by the sea. Time dissolves out there, especially on overcast and foggy days, but I like how it’s always changing and always fresh and new with each tide. I love how you can find endless subjects and compositions on the same stretch of coastline for years and never run out of things to capture your attention and to photograph. There’s motion, action, activity, calmness and timelessness all juxtaposed. I grew up next to one of my favorite beaches to photograph but now I live 1,300 miles away in the Rocky Mountains. It’s true what they say: distance makes the heart grow fonder, and scarcity creates value.

For me, Alistair, seascapes are fascinating and change all the time with light, weather, tides and I never get tired of exploring them. Really enjoy your photography and how your share you experience.

What excellent feature to be able to crop in camera and yet have the rest of the image available. I took some fall color images this morning that had some beautiful light, but I'm not sure I can crop the uninteresting from the shot. Some excellent shots to illustrate your points.

For someone who doesn't always have the opportunity to pick my time out with a camera there is no "classic landscape photography weather", just the opportunity to make the best of the time one has (I think you've made that point in past videos). Great to see how you made use of the conditions and to hear your compositional thought process.

Admit that I enjoy your perspective of creativity in framing during post processing. Can’t really relate to those who insist on getting it all decided and dictated in camera. Part of the thrill in making an image is to see what I can make of it as I process it to the point of how I felt when I took the photo. Realize that this is also significantly related to my lack of skill but that’s part of the learning process for me.

Very good... My relationship with seascape photography needs to be developed because I am not out in the "seascape" very often.

Another excellent video Alister. The nearest rocky seacoast is 750 miles from me. Need to put that on my bucket list. I just love the informative info you share with your edits. The video is certainly not too long.

These are fantastic images. I love the image at 15:55, but I am leaning more to the full frame version. Thanks for sharing

Such beautiful shots, Alister, thank you ever so much for this one! It´s very inspiring to listen to you explaining your decisions. And don’t worry about the length of the video or yourself being lost in details and passion - I find it very infectious that you are presenting your „babies“ so enthusiastically, you have got good reasons in my opinion.

Another excellent video, Alister….good to hear you saying such nice things about geology (I’m a geologist). Other than the geology, I think one of the things I like most about seascapes is exploring the creative possibilities of varying shutter speed to capture or smooth out wave action.

I thought you were going to say congratulations for getting this far as you tend to waffle pish 🤣 Always interesting to see your mind work and the explanation as you tweak the crops. That first one I had a 9/16 screaming at me with the top of the central rock anchoring the frame giving a light path on the stones curving back to the central one. You were playing with it but each to their own 🙂
As for the sea, I live foe the sea, the power, the motion, the texture yet throw on a ND and it can flip everything. Looking forward to RT then week 3, feel free to extend the run 🙂

Thanks Alister! I eagerly watched the entire video. The sand image at 9:07 I enjoyed your comments re: cropping etc. I seek out similar images at sunrise and low tide. So far, just not happy with my images, I'll look at mine again.

Really enjoyed this video; especially liked your creative cropping choices and your hands-on shot by shot explanation of these choices. I have an interest in the north Spanish coast and didn't realize that you ran workshops to this area in the fall as well as the dead of winter; ill have to keep a better eye out on your future announcements. Cheers 😊

Love listening to your passion Alister. I love the seaside but don't live near one. I could watch and listen to waves all day long. So soothing. Really loved the images at 15:38 and 22:22. Looking forward to part 2 and also to your conversation with Rachel. I'm still trying to find my fave shutter speed for waterfalls and water. All depends on the feeling one gets at the scene I think.

Hi Alister, thank you for your timely content as I'm planning a trip to the stunning Moray Coast next week, at the edge of my home county. As you suggested, I'll approach things with an open mind and hopefully avoid the pitfalls that can arise from having rigid expectations. Your videos are a great resource, and I appreciate all the effort that goes into creating them. Best regards. Sandy

Goodevening Alister, fantastic video as always, i would love to shoot seascapes but i live right in the alps so i guess i have to experiment with waterfalls and rivers ( cool patterns and textures on the rocks here too ). i also wanted to say that today i received the kase revolution filter kit so i'm so happy, but unfortunately I wasn't able to use your code cause I ordered in europe from the german website... is there a chance in the future that kase could give you a discont code that work in europe too? thank you anyways :)
