And they're doing it still...Aaron Terrence Hughes was saying in 20 Years, what will be left? He creates perfumes, and he's a cosmetic chemist. Love his channel❤
THANK you!!! I have my original Poison Eau de Toilette from 1986 (it was a Mother’s Day gift 💝), and I was too frugal with it. Like your original bottle, my top notes went off, so I splurged for a 1 oz. bottle of the Eau de Parfum a few months ago from Sephora. Was I ever angry! It wasn’t the same. I looked at the reviews (should have done that in the FIRST place, looking back), and sure enough, the reviews resounded with, “This is not the same formulation!” Only one commenter said that everyone was wrong, that it hadn’t been reformulated, but she had not tried the original. Of course, I sounded off, stating that I had the original. I’m still so mad and upset with Dior, but thank you SOOOOOOO, so much for your Amazon dupe recommendation! ❤
The only fragrance Dior hasn’t completely butchered is Addict. I have all three formulas now and yes the first one is AMAZING with second coming in very close, but while the third maybe isn’t a mind boggling wonderful as the first and second, it’s still a gorgeous scent. They better just leave it alone now though 😡
Loved this video! And would love to see one on reformulations that ARE worth buying. I hate that I never got to experience some of the original formulations of these, like Stella and Miss Dior Cherie just because I wasn’t buying perfumes as much in the early 2000s. But I do remember some amazing fragrances from back in the 80s and 90s that I’m sure aren’t as good now - YSL Paris, Givenchy Amarige, Guerlain Champs Elysses, Ralph Lauren Safari, etc. They were perfumes that either my mom wore, or I wore in high school. I find it hard to wear certain vintage fragrances now, but love to smell them for the nostalgia.
Sarah I think this is a great video cuz your so spot on with your impression of how good they used to be.. so so true! Thank you beautiful for your time an will definitely use when purchasing!! ❣️
Hypnotizing Venom by Dua is an excellent dupe for the OG Hypnotic Poison. I even returned my recently purchased bottle to Sephora and I am not mad at all lol
Arpege - My grandmother wore it in the 1960s. I wore it in the 1980s. I grew suffered some nostalgic loneliness for Arpege about four years ago and brought a tester from Fragrance X. It was horrible. I figured the tester was old, so I tried again and brought another bottle about a year later. It was as bad as the tester. The newly formulated Arpege smells (to me) like an old residue scent that was trapped in a wool coat that had been stored in a closet for years.
It’s so sad. I hate it when they butcher amazing fragrances like that. A lot of people assume that they are getting fakes. Nope. Just a reformulated mess. 😭
I was in my early 20s in the mid to late 1980s and was already a perfume junkie. I had Vanilla Fields and Sand & Sable and used to get so many compliments. I wish I knew then what I know now because there wasn't any thought of fragrances being discontinued or reformulated. I repurchased Sand & Sable about 5 years ago and I liked it but something was different. I thought it was just me until I discovered the perfume community on UA-cam and found out that many of the fragrances I loved back then have been reformulated. I used to love Tribeca by Paul Sebastian and Inoui by Shiseido. There was also a really nice little spicy drugstore perfume called Ninja.
I think Ninja was supposed to be a dupe for Poison, if I remember correctly (I used to buy the Ninja body spray). But back to Sand & Sable, that was another one that I loved, and when I recently repurchased it, Tabu, and Chantilly, none of them were the same. 😢💔
Yes please do the good reformulated video!! I love vintage and I buy all the reformulated classics knowing that they aren't what they were..I miss the days of real perfume when I was a kid.
You are so right about the Dior. I originally thought I liked the new 2021 but the more I wore it I realized I don’t. It has a sweet screechiness to it. I never smelled the older versions but the 2017 was definitely special. I have no desire to buy any more Dior. I like blooming bouquet but I just found a Zara dupe that literally smells identical and lasts about as long. I also loved the Stella perfume. I wore it in the early 2000s. I got a bottle a couple years ago on fragrance net and I honestly have no idea if it’s the new formulation or not because I just can’t remember the original scent. It smells enough like it to me but I don’t think it lasts long so it probably is reformulated. I hope Dior sales go way down. 😅😅
I don't know why, but hearing you talk about reformulations so passionately, almost made me emotional. I understand the heartbreak that comes with a company ruining something that was once so beautiful, so perfect, and so iconic. Fragrance is seriously so special. It can make you think of a time, a memory, a person, a place, a year, an emotion, etc There are so many iconic Fragrances, that I've yet to be able to try. It makes me sad because I don't think I'll ever truly get to at this point. I doubt I'll ever get to experience the beauty of what so many of these Fragrances, once was. I don't think all of this would be so bad, if the companies had at LEAST disclosed the reason why so many are being reformulated. It's kinda like Mugler fragrances. L'Oreal absolutely butchered what a lot of Theirry Mugler masterpieces once were. Nobody can do it like he did. He is forever missed in this community.
Sarah, This is a great topic! I went thru a bottle of Light Blue super fast because I was always respraying every hour! Same problem with the Alyssa Ashley Musk. It had been several years since I owned a bottle and I was so disappointed! It lasted a hour at the most. It’s in my pan perfumes but I’m so annoyed with it I’m not sure if I will use it up or give it away. I’m so glad you did this video ❤️💐❤️
the original light blue was amazing!! Used to smell like fir honey. Now it is a whole new fragrance....they changed it so much that should be illegal!! they made a watered down version of light blue eau intense instead.
One classic house that is absolutely still very well done and potent are the Jessica McLintock's. Those were designed for formal weddings and proms etc so they are floral. But absolute BOMBS and good quality (not synthetic). The blue version is the old Lauren heart notes.
Dior addict is excellent I have the reformulated one and wore it yesterday it lasted all day! Not kidding , like 12 hours. I have miss Dior edp the 2017 version and wow it is soooo good!
I completely agree with you about Dior. They have absolutely butchered their classics, including Miss Dior, which my Mother wore in the 60s and 70s when I was a little girl. I also agree the Gucci is not a good house. I don't own even one of their perfumes. oxJulia
Some ingredients are endangered or no longer available, like certain varieties of sandalwood, and also due to allergies and health concerns regarding certain fragrance oils. So it’s a trade off. The components of perfumes are generally more synthetic now.
Back in the 80’s Sand & Sable was beautiful and beast mode! My sister’s signature scent. I actually miss the bottle it came in! It looked and smelled like it’s name. It’s such a shame. If you find one that’s been recreated to smell like it, please share! I’d love to surprise my sister with it. It didn’t have the urine smell in the 80’s. I could recognize it anywhere! Alyssa Ashley white musk pales in comparison to the old formulation. Gucci is so disappointing these days! I have the D & G Lemon Zest, I gave it to my Mom. It smells incredible but literally lasts an hour. It’s all so sad, especially for the price we pay!
Great video, yes do the other one also. D&G Light Blue is the worst on lasting power the only one that works is the intense. I agree Gucci Flora is the best and such a shame that it’s being discontinued too!
Hi Sarah! I completely agree with your list! I used to own Coty Vanilla Musk and whoa what a beast it was back then. Pure Poison was so much creamier back then. Dior has completely watered down their classics. I also don't think Exclamation or Arden Green Tea smell the same anymore. 😕
Totally agree on Dior! What they’re doing It’s a disgrace. The new versions of Miss Dior EDP and Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet are a total fail. One might very well go to Zara and get some floral perfumes. Same effect
Hi Sarah, I thought my nose was going awkward with perfumes and it’s all these reformulations that the perfume houses are making let’s water down it down create the hype and charge more. I have the original poison hypnotic, Safari, Vice Versa, Lou Lou and you could buy really good dupes and save money. I bought Guess Red and it smells identical Tom Ford Lost cherry!
Vintage are amazing for me too, they age and improve with time..I don't understand how some perfumes turn bad, I saw some videos where they would say some were off and old..my mom also said perfume should t spoil, it must have some crap in
Back in the day drugstore perfumes were great and really affordable. And the designer ones were in reach ($) for a special bottle or two in my collection and they were unique and long lasting. Lately, I’m “meh” on the fragrance world. 🤷♀️ (Compared to the 80’s & 90’s formulations)
Whoa! I took your advice and ordered Position from Amazon, hoping to learn what the old formulation of Hypnotic Poison might smell like. It just arrived today, and it certainly is nostalgic to my nose. Unfortunately, the scent memory it gives me is the old style Aqua Net hairspray that my Mom used back when I was growing up. Interesting how different noses pick up different things. For now I'm going to stick with my bottle of Hypnotic Poison Sensuelle, which I adore, and can't get anymore. I still enjoyed the video though.
I like Dior, but I have to agree with you about their reformulations. They do it too often so it makes rebuying a fragrance next to impossible. That whole Miss Dior Cherie fiasco will be long remembered.
I feel like Dior reformed Miss Dior again in 2017. I have that one. I kinda hate it! And yes Hypnotic Poison.... it's a sad reminder of what it once was! However it is a favorite of my 17 Yr old daughter! She had the same reaction I did when I was younger and first smelled Hypnotic!
Also recommend L'Interdit rouge(ILLEGAL WOMAN) and MY WAY (YES WOMAN) dupes from JFENZI amoung their stunning dupe of FAME (FIESTY) and MISS DIOR (MISS JILL) . JFENZI are $15 max and last well
That’s why I haven’t bought any of the miss Dior’s … however, I do have the Dior addict, poison girl (edp) and hypnotic poison (edp) I love these but the rest I haven’t even considered because of all the complaints of the reformulations
GOOD NEWS ! There is an excelLent MISS DIOR dupe (yes , that popcorn note!) by another Polish brand much better than La Rive ! It is calletd MISS JILL and made by JFENZI ! LIGHT BLUE is far from the magic it was originally it smells like washing powder with some toilet cleaner citruses ...
Love Gucci flora. I scored a tester bottle (original formula) and I have the eau fraiche one. I was also lucky to score the light blue Italian zest. Poor performance :( not worth it. Smells so nice though.
I don't think the new Mugler Aliens or Angels are worth purchasing. I luckily have a full bottle plus a backup of OG Alien!! I can't live without my Aliennn. I have to agree about vintage style perfume being intoxicating ageless and timeless. I wore my vintage Revlon Unforgettable and thought now THAT is a perfume!!💘
Hi Sarah. With the Vanilla Fields… If I find one that’s the original (like the bottle style you have) on mercari or wherever do you think it will smell like it went bad? Yes. Do the opposite, do perfumes reformulated and still worth buying 👍🏻
Yes!
Has it been done already or not yet? It's been a while now, would be nice to see this video
IFRA has ruined much of the perfume industry, and sometimes certain ingredients are just over harvested. Like what happened to Indian sandalwood.
