Even if we did not have the anime scenes of the original Gotei fighting, I could imagine them fighting in the same level of brutality as that of zombified Hitsugaya. Remember when he fought Ikkaku and Yumichika? He immediately slashed Ikkaku across the back after freezing his leg, and was about to finish the job. With Yumichika, he created a spike of ice on his kneecap and friggen' kneed Yumichika; he then proceeded to slash Yumichika across the chest. The way Hitsugaya fought against those two is pretty much how the original Gorei fought.

In my view, Ywach's critique over the strength of Gotei 13 is not over raw power but attitude. They were a ruthless militia, with few attachments to taboos/customs and not overregulated by Central 46 at that point in history (i even wonder if Central 46 even existed around that time) Plenty of examples like Orihime not restoring Yama-ji arm, Vizard captains forbidden of using their hollow forms in TYBW etc
I think the original Gotei 13 was like the phantom troupe from HxH. Stealing and killing as much as they want. After the first war against the Quincies, soul society offered to pardon their crimes if they work as officers under central 46. While Yamamoto and Unohana wanted to do better in life, I’m 100% certain the other members didn’t want to tag along and pretend to suddenly be goody two shoes. Since they enjoyed their freedom.

So while you CAN argue the original Gotei 13 weren't the strongest, that is the main differences between both eras. Look at Unohana for example, she legit could kill Zaraki in one shot and leave if she REALLY WANTED TO as even Zaraki himself said that she changed with dealing damage regardless of how it was done

I'm a simple man and this is my simple analysis about this subject. The Quincey were at their weakest during the first war unlike the gotei 13 who were at the peak of their prowess but unlike the current war in question the Quincey learned from their last blunder and worked towards growth unlike the gotei who were overconfident and let themselves go. Quincy at their strongest and the gotei at their weakest because of overconfidence, they didn't feel urgency to improve or keep up the standard unlike the Quincey

Their lack of morals and brutal nature is what made them the strongest coupled with the fact that they were probably massively OP and skilled. The current Gotei 13 are too moral and full of integrity to do what the 1st Gen did so they’re much softer than their predecessors. I can only really see Shunsui, Zaraki, Gin and maybe Byakuya fitting in with the original Gotei 13. Mostly Shunsui and Zaraki though.

If they would return to Zanpakuto it would mean Oetsu Nimaya would take them and turn then into fresh asauchi :D I highly doubt that
I actually assumed they were the weakest Gotai 13, but also the most brutal and cunning (I suspect that Sasakibe was the first shinigami to achieve Bankai outside of Ichibe and shown a Shikai wielding Yamamoto the potential for Zanpakuto evolution during their duel)
I mean until we get a sense of what they can do, it doesn't make any sense to question that canonically, they are strongest. Moreover, a lot of the later generations of captains are propped up by a select few individuals so I can see why none those iterations got that title. Either way, we have to wait and see before making any concrete conclusions.
