    I recently got a questions from Gomez about what size of landscape lighting wire to use for your LED landscape lighting system. This is a common quesstion so I tried to answer in this video and explain why 12/2 low voltage direct buria landscape lighting wire is the most common for most led landscape lighting systems. You can follow this link to see what kind of 12/2 wire we recommend - www.lightingdoc...

    I don't really understand the Voltage Drop chart. Why would a 5 watt at 10' dropping .01 be in the pink? I would think anything before the white in the chart should also be white..

    • @LightingDoctor
      @LightingDoctor  Рік тому

      If you are using a good LED lamp you do not really need to worry about the low end of the chart. If you are using halogen bulbs than you want to stay in the white range

    Hello
    I bought :
    14 LED spotlights, 10W each (140W all together), warm white 3000K.
    Transformer : 250W - 24V.
    14/2 gauge wire - 100 ft.
    But the whole setup should finally be 120 ft.
    So, I have some questions :
    1st : Despite the shortage of 20 ft, will my 14/2 gauge cable be OK ?
    2nd : To cover the missing 20 ft, what would be best ?
    A- Extend the wire from 3 fittings to the main line, in parallel connection, so that all the spotlights will be connected to the same 100ft 14/2 gauge cable ?
    With a 16/2 gauge cable from the 3 fittings to the main line ?
    B- Make a T-junction and add an extra 14/2 gauge cable for 3 spotlights ?
    C- Run that extra 14/2 gauge cable straight from the transformer towards the same 3 spotlights ?
    3rd : Should I try to swap my 100ft 14/2 gauge towards a 200ft 12/2 gauge cable and have 1 simple line ?
    Thank you for your advise.

    What gauge wire usually comes out of the landscape lights? Can I connect 12/2 wire to them and to the 200watt transformer that I have?

    Question. I am doing 4 different electric runs on my transformer. One line is 300 feet and I was going to put 5 led lights on that line at 4 volts per light for a total 20 volts . Will 10/2 be good for that run?

    • @LightingDoctor
      @LightingDoctor  3 роки тому

      It depends on the lights. General rule of thumb is no more than 80 to 100 watts on a single run of 12/2 wire up to 250ft. However some cheaper fixtures and transforners will not adhere to this rule but with 10/2 you should be safe. The better the quality of the lights the more flexibility you have

    I've got two old Malibu light sets that use 7 watt wedge bulbs in the fixtures. Can I replace the 12 gauge cable with 14 gauge cable? The cable run on both sets is about 45-50 feet.

      You can use this www.calculator.net/voltage-drop-calculator.html to calculate the voltage drop over the wire its self then each light will also drop the voltage to the next light

    Also is it required to bury the landscaping wire underground or can I just leave it un burried? I mean I am planning to dig and try to bury the wire probbaly when I have spare time to do it. But as of now I just left it un bury

    • @LightingDoctor

      Yes you are fine to keep it above ground for now. Eventually you will want to Bury so It does not get damaged but it will be fine for a short period of time.

    Totally agree with the 12/2 wire for LED's! The price difference for quality 12/2 and 14/2 is negligible in the big picture.
    Question, our yard is set-up with two (2) separate runs and my old Transformer has dual multi-taps .. should I buy a mult-tap if I have 25 or so LED lights max. (20 fixtures with 7W/250 lumens, 5 fixtures with 10W/500 lumens, and 3-4 accent/bollards with

      What voltage are the taps. Is therw a 12 volt and a 14 volt or some other combination?

    • @LightingDoctor
      @LightingDoctor  6 років тому +2

      Approx how much wire are you running. You should be able to run approx 100watts roughly 250 ft off a 12 volt tap without having to worry to much about voltage drop

    • @LightingDoctor

      Depending on something called the CRI rating of the lights you may have to be more conservative with those numbers. The lower the rating percentage the more conservative

      I'm running probably 150' to maybe 200' on one run with at most 20 7W fixtures and the other run 75' to 100' with the remaining fixtures. Oh by the way, outside I'm tapping off using some of the OLD 10 Gauge and afterwards converting to 12 gauge. The reason is simply because it's run underneath the driveway and sidewalk. I'm not up to the effort of yanking out all that burried cable and 100% redoing all the pulls and who knows what...

    Question. I have a 88 watts transformer which has 1 com and 1 tap. I have my 7 4w pathway light and 4 3w spot light total of 40 watts running in one line of 75ft 16 gauge wire. If I want to use a different line to run the wire in different direction , can I plug in a different wire in same com 1 and tap1 port?

    • @LightingDoctor
      @LightingDoctor  6 років тому +1

      To Really make sure it works without any significant voltage drop I would run another Line from the Transformer. If you were using 12/2 Wire you would be fine but because it is only 16 Gage you may have to limit the lights on the line.

    • @badboyxx99
      @badboyxx99 6 років тому +1

      Lighting Doctor Ltd. Ok so your saying I can run another line with the same com1 and tap1 port as I did it on the first line. And can I not use the same 16 gauge wire to run it to different direction. I know you mentioned about 12 gauge wire .but isn't that only if I am going over 100ft coverage rather than 75ft

    • @badboyxx99
      @badboyxx99 6 років тому +1

      Lighting Doctor Ltd. Also since you mentioned about using 12 gauge wire. Can I use 12 gauge wire even if I need to cover only 75ft ? I know some says that use 12 gauge wire of your going to run more than 100ft coverage . If it's short than use 16?

    • @LightingDoctor
      @LightingDoctor  6 років тому +1

      16 gage will be fine for a few lights and yes you can use the same tap. Using 12/2 will just give you more flexibility to add lights in the future

    • @LightingDoctor
      @LightingDoctor  6 років тому +1

      Really depends on how many lights and wattage you have on the line. I know with 12 hahe you can easily put 20 LED lights o 300ft cable with no issues

  • @illmatic33

    I have a question here... I have around 70-90 ft max for my house (lenght of current landscape light installed)... Call this line 'a'! I have an area I wanted to added three light so I split line 'a' at about 60 feet to add line 'b'. I found that once I added the second light on line 'b' the lights on line 'a' beyond that "split" start to dim significantly. Would it be better for me to undo line 'b' and extend line 'a' at that 60 feet mark I spoke about? The transformer can supply up to 300 watts and all my lights are led 4 watt bulb EXCEPT those I added on 'b' which were still led but much brighter (maybe 9 watts)...
    Hope that makes sense...

    • @LightingDoctor
      @LightingDoctor  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Don, does your transformer have a 14 or 15 volt tap? If it does try using that and it might fix it. Sou ds like a voltage drop issue

    • @LightingDoctor
      @LightingDoctor  4 роки тому

      You could also just run another line to the 9 watt lights from the transformer and that would almost definitely fix the problem, just be a little more work... hope this helps

      @@illmatic33 there would be more voltage drop on the 16/2 (use fewer lights) but wouldnt affect the 12/2 anymore
