The Rays should move to Orlando,a team in Orlando will highly likely outdraw what they draw in St.Pete as well as what the Marlins draw in Miami for one simple reason, tourists.Tampa is a poor city and St.Pete is not highly populated.Miami is highly populated but it's a very expensive city and people just don't find it in their time and/or budget to go catch a Marli s game.Florida is obviously not going to have three teams so what makes the most sense is the Rays going to Orlando. If the actual city of Tampa can get something done then build it there but I still feel Orlando is the best location, right there next to Sea World and the convention center but it never made sense to me to stick another stadium in St.Pete!
It would be a better location because there are lots of Yankees, Red Sox, etc. fans here and tourists that would go to games when those teams play. But but no one in Orlando gives a damn about the Rays, so I don't see how a new stadium could be funded. And the place I still call the Citrus Bowl will not cut it.
I was born and raised in St Petersburg. It's already unlivable there due to cost of living. I had to leave after almost 30 years. St Petersburg needs more housing, not a new stadium that taxpayers will have to pay for.
I say Raleigh...take the new stadium concept meant for St. Pete and bring it there, but make it with a retractable roof and try to get it opened by 2029. Their AAA team plays in nearby Durham and those two teams can share the Durham park for three seasons (2026-28) with a big sendoff at the end hosted by Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, considering 2028 will be the 40th anniversary of the release of the Bull Durham movie. The Raleigh ballpark should be located on the west side of town near both the recently re-named Lenovo Center (home ot the Hurricanes) and Carter-Finley Stadium (home of NC State football). This would even things out as well between Raleigh and Charlotte as each city would now have two major sports teams. This would also be convenient for Yankees and Red Sox fans living in the Raleigh-Durham area. As for the team name, the Carolina Rays would work best, but Mudcats could be considered.
I've been weighing the arguments for what to do about the A's and Rays' situations, and I've come to a conclusion. No team should be permitted to participate in MLB competition if they aren't playing in a Major League stadium. It's not as if the A's didn't have plenty of advance notice. If a team is planning on moving, they need to make a deal with the new location to have a steady ready for them BEFORE their current lease expires. I know Fischer assumed (mistakenly) that Oakland would give him an extension on the Coliseum, but he needed to have that extension signed and unbreakable at the time the new location broke ground for a new stadium. To wait until his lease ran out and just HOPE that Oakland would give him an extension (why would they do so?) was incompetent, irrational, and unbecoming of any business person. The Rays' situation is somewhat different, in that they had a deal with Tampa to continue leasing the Trop but the hurricane destroyed the stadium. A tough break, but it doesn't change the fact that they don't have a ML stadium to play in while the new stadium in Tampa is being built - if that even goes through. If the A's and Rays are banned from playing MLB until they have a MLB-worthy stadium ready, what is to be done about their players? Obviously the players under contract can't sit home the next 3-4 years. I conclude the only feasible solution is to force both teams to trade all players who are currently on their 40 man roster in return for prospects. Their Minor League franchises would continue as always, and the prospects received in return for the players on the 40 man roster would play in the minors until a MLB-worthy stadium is ready. If anyone has a better solution, I'd like to hear it. Forcing the owners of the A's and Rays to sell the teams doesn't change the fact that the new owners wouldn't have a stadium ready for 2025 either. Voiding the 40 man roster in return for prospects seems the only practical solution.
I see where you’re coming from but Fisher and the A’s are a completely different story in terms of playing at an MLB facility. Fisher always wanted out of Oakland and the reason he’s playing at Sacramento is because it’s rent free and it expedited his and MLB’s desire to abandon the city. Fisher has been a greedy, conniving piece of shit owner since day one. We knew he and Lew Wolff his former co-owner wanted to get the team out of Oakland since they took over, it’s just that they played us and the city as far as they could then right before the clock struck midnight to solidify the Howard Terminal project, they abandoned everything/stopped stalling and set forth their true intentions all along. With the Rays, it’s nothing short of a true tragedy. Nobody could’ve predicted that a natural disaster would’ve left their ballpark in ruins, which given the whole new stadium situation sadly creates an easier exit strategy for their ownership and MLB. I believe their plan all along was to bait the fan base and the state like Fisher did with Oakland only for them to pull out last minute and relocate somewhere else. Whether it be in Florida or the most likely situation to relocate to another city, that’s been on MLB’s map I firmly believe their time in St. Pete and the state of Florida altogether is almost at its end. Putting the franchises on hold would never work when we still have major league level ball parks all over North America. The Oakland Coliseum can be ready in days, Montreal still has some life left, and there’s still other stadiums like Turner Field and the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington which are still being used by other local teams now that could suffice for a temporary solution. My heart goes out to Tampa Bay Rays fans. Losing a ball team like how we lost ours in Oakland is heartbreaking, evil, and something that I hope no fanbase ever has to deal with. But looking at the track record, I’m afraid TB is next.
Orlando is the most logical choice outside Tampa. Bigger population and growing faster than Nashville, Charlotte, Raleigh. Plus Orlando gets more tourists than those 3 places combined and then some.
I believe NO politician in Nashville or Tennessee would endorse or attempt to use public funds for a baseball stadium for the Ray's. Montreal didn't even want to pay $600 for baseball stadium in 2002, let alone paying for a 1.8 billion stadium in 2025. Only hope for Rays is Salt Lake City.
