I find that theater/acting exercises really help me get into a new character. Like you mentioned, how do they walk? Where do they lead from? Their head, chest, hips?what kind of gate do they have? Do they shuffle, stride, limp? Do they have any ticks or nervous actions? Always adjusting their glasses, ringing hands, snapping etc. If I feel like I'm coming out of character start doing one of their ticks. I find the physicality helps get into it mentally. Do they have an accent or dialect? How fast or slow do they talk? Sometimes I find a voice super fast with just how they physically act but sometimes I have to play around. There are tons of personality and morality question sheets out there for d&d that you can use to to help flesh out how your character would respond to situations and interactions. Costuming is so fun and wearing an outfit of someone else can really help you get into character as well. Maybe you have a piece you want to make a whole character around! Maybe you have nothing. Thrifting is a great way to find clothes for any setting and I mean any! But keep practicality in mind as well as why the character wears or has that item :) loved the video, it had lots of great tips!
I may not larp but I do a lot of character design and I will just act out my character in my room when I’m by myself and I think the hardest part of creating a character is character design
I'm not quite old enough yet to do larp but I'm very close. I do a LOT of character design and a friend and I created an entire universe called Fortaare that we roleplayed in online. My character's name was Feyra Suoh, an ex-noble, dragon-human hybrid woman. Fortaare is a world full of fantasy creatures and the main kingdom is made up of humans. Sadly, the present King of Fortaare's wife was murdered by dragons (in this world dragons are sentient beings that can shapeshift into human forms once they reach a certain age. I'd say about 6. They are nicknamed "Beasts of Deception" because of this ability). Resulting from the Queen's death, the King went mad and has spread propaganda around the kingdom about how dragons are the epitome of evil and should be hunted down and killed. All dragons used to live in Fortaare but after the massacre started, they fled through a portal to another dimension. It's sort of a pocket dimension created by a wizard if you will. Some stayed behind, some fled. The Dragon Empress' daughter decided to stay after falling in love with a human man. He accepted her for who she was and they had a daughter, Feyra Suoh. She's a redhead with piercing orangish-red reptile eyes. She's a funny and curious woman with a charming and fiery personality. She's got three other friends, two of which are made by my friend. Their names are Dax Longwei, Luna Nightingale, and Ackley Thomas. Dax is actually my character as well. He grew up with Feyra and is a full blooded Wainani (water) dragon, unlike Feyra, who is half Hestia (fire) dragon. Luna and Ackley are my friend's characters. Luna is a very quiet and serious demon who is four years younger than Feyra and Dax. She is an actual demon and has the ability to control souls within a person. Ackley is quite the opposite of Luna. He is also a demon but he's surprisingly cheerful and goofy. He has quite the little crush on Luna and always has. He loves trees. He has the ability to control shadows. So yeah. I love lore building and character designing. It's something I do in my free time.
I recommend always having a goal of some kind. What does your character want to do in life? Give them long term goals so you always have something to focus on when you dont align with the narrative around you. Also great to have you back, looking forward to more videos!
Great video! I wish I had this before stepping into LARP because I got rocked going into bigger fantasy LARP scenes, they are intense. Through trial and error, I discovered I flourish in the post apocalyptic scene where my real life experiences carry over into the LARP and my actions tend to speak for me. Great video and great information! Thank you!
My first (and curretly only) larp character was more or less just me in the Empire setting. But overtime he's actually evolved, into me with more exagerated character traits. And since our Empire group has now grown my wife and I have started to gravitate to a den mother/father sort of role, which is fitting giving our house is wolf themed. But I spent ages coming up with his name, i knew I wanted something French sounding. The House name was easy, it had to be wolf themed, so I went with de Loup, I'm aware it should be du Loup, but I worked that little mistake into the house's backstory as a quirk. For his first name I spent weeks thinking up French names, I decided I wanted something that could be shotened to have a "ie" sound to it. Eventually I picked Bertrand, which has been shortened to Bertie, and it really fits.
Nova : he’s from the Mediterranean Sea. He’s a enchanter/ bard but his combat style is magic and rapier . He seeks knowledge and the arts but times of war has made him who he is. He wants to see the world in peace .. but in order for there to be peace, brave men/ women must need to rise and battle evil .. Personality : he’s the boy next door, he gets hyper fixated on solving problems, From spells, potions, to quests .. he goes from village to village giving aid to those in need to give them courage to rise and fight .. Clothes: functionality: he’s from The southern kingdoms .. so he wears open neck shirts .. however functionality is key .. he is mostly in the wilderness so clothes that last long is key. ( leathers , wool, hides ) In the cold he will wear pelts, furs, heavy boots, cloaks.. he learns from the cultures he meets and adapts to survive in the region. Weapons: Gladius, magic orbs , knives. Bow for hunting.. But again nova adapts and will use any weapon at his disposal he seeks knowledge and learn new combat styles Race: it is believed that his tribe was once mixed with the fallen messengers from the sky . The messengers from above taught them to make swords, precious metals , music .
Thank you for this, I’m currently making a new character for Dawn and was struggling on getting some specifics down and this really helped! Let’s hope Empire will be running in 2021 ;-;
Also remember that you don't have to scream and make a seance to be dramatic, once my characters best friend died and he scolded him for being a idiot but then later that he drank alone
Watching this has led me to spend like 3 hours designing a general lARP character and trying to find Larp things (Groups events and that stuff.) In London... And not having much luck.
I have been wanting to try out LARP for a long time now, but I'm really not sure where to start. I do reenactment and have been afraid, to use my reenactment gear for LARP, as I'm not sure if it would be looked as pretentious, and I'm not sure what I can use. What would you recommend to start out with, and how would you recommend I get into the comunity when I don't know anyone in the comunity ? Ps: Love your videos, and it was your Empire Larp video that got me really considering finally trying out LARP.
question: how do you make your audio sound so good with a blue snowball ice? i have the same mic and it sounds like literal garbage... do you use a mixer as well?
It's good to see you back, I loved the video and every advice you gave, and thanks to you I only want to try larping even more! Let's hope some day I can 😋
