Mr. DiBlasi, My words might be inadequate to express the enormous help that your video instructions have been to me. It was so comforting to me. Many of my worries of aloneness and being a novice dissipated as I studied your constant, pleasant, and well-trained actions. Thank you for extending that to me. Why would anyone dislike this video? This is the exact method used for tiling a ceiling. Everything in this video was done perfectly, and yet someone disliked the video. So to all of the butthurt jealous pricks out there, after you click 'dislike', be so kind as to say why you disliked the video. Explain why, instead of just clicking 'dislike' and misleading people into thinking this is not 100% correct. To everyone - this is a 100% correct method used by someone who has obviously been doing this job for decades. Ignore the dislikes, because those people don't know a single thing about tiling. Hi Sal, firstly I would like to thank you for making the time developing your tutorial videos. If could get your advice or if you have a video of tiling a sloped shower cieling with porcelain tile up to a skylight. If anyone has any tips I would be greatly appreciated.
Drats ! Thanks for the video again. Now I know that my ceiling tiles in my marble shower may not be as good as they need to be although I did put a ton of mortar (on ceiling and on tile). The guy I got advice from told us to make a CIRCLE/bullseye on the tile instead of back buttering with just straight lines. This did make a difference since I was also putting thinset on the ceiling. Have you heard / seen this? I tired pulling down the tile off the ceiling after putting my bullseye on the tile and it wouldn't come down. Seemed like a good strategy - what do you think? On other SLATE tile shower I had to put 2x4s to hold up on ceiling (didn't know about bullseye method)... these were 18 x 18 very heavy slate tiles. Ridiculous but they are still up today after 10 yrs...holding well. (I'll never do that again though) - The mortar did a great job... Current Project: Master shower ceiling is little 1in glass mosaic's ...another different type of challenge for the ceiling...Was wondering if I should do a skim coat over the kerdi prior to installing my glass mosaic tile. The master shower is a steam shower... the ceiling is a 3 in rise vaulted barrel type ... fun...my thoughts are to do the below for this ceiling - what do you think? (Mortar - TEC Super Flex ... based on several of your videos... I don't trust the Schulter all set...) 1. Keyin mortar to ceiling, then use the perfect size trowel for my tile; Knock down ridges 2. Roll on a little mortar to the tile (paper backed) with small paint roller (saw this is other manufacturer vid) - just get it a bit sticky 3. Then use a kerdi board to hold my tile while pressing it into mortar (trick of yours)... Best, Connie
Can I put those pebble sheets of tile on my shower ceiling? It’s got a skip trowel texture on it. Could I or should I just peel that off the dry wall already there or do I have to completely replace it with a fresh, flat piece of drywall or hardy board?
@@SalDiBlasiI think he was asking about the tile that you put straight up on the bare ceiling. I watched the link in your reply but that didn’t include bare substrate. Thanks for sharing all your experience!

Hey Sal! Boo Boo says hi! Great video Sal. One question though. Would it benefit having green board on the ceiling instead of regular drywall. I actually thought to tile a ceiling, cement board or what not should be up there just as the walls.
+flight0508 Unless it is a steam shower dry wall is just fine, green board does not give you any added protection, it is not water safe. If you want to use cement board there is no reason not to.
Sal, I love you videos. Thanks for taking the time to make these available to us. Wondering do you use silver tape specifically? I imagine that its good tack and maybe a clean release. I've never used it for a short period so not quite sure, you peaked my interest. Thanks again.
Mr I have done so much tile in my life what are you doing is right but when you do celling tile I never put tile on sheet rock is wrong plus you have to back butter your porcelain tiles for 100% bond to surface and the tile
The ceiling will never see any water, if it was a steam shower, then you would be right, and those tiles do have 100% coverage. You may have installed a lot of tile, but this is what i do for a living for the past 32 years.
Sal thank you for the videos. Please explain any advantages/disadvantages to installing tiles on the wall first and then the ceiling vs the other way around. IYO, is there a max tile size for a ceiling installation, is a 24 X 24 inch (or any large format tile) tile possible if supported until adhesive dries? Thank you, Tony
ts302 The reason i did the walls first on this bathroom was because the wall tile was on a diagonal, and the ceiling tile was set square. Much easier to measure a tile set square than one set on a diagonal. if it had been the other way around, which is usually the case, I would have done the ceiling first.
Sal, tile ceiling first or walls? I plan on using different tiles for the ceiling so they don't match. I figured on tiling the ceiling first, any explanation?
You can do either first, when tile on the ceiling js on a diagonal it is just easier to do the ceiling firtst and then cut the wall tile to the ceiling, and vice a versa
Chris deloach you are correct, I just did what the interior decorator wanted, in the end it is all a matter of opinion and taste, and that is why there is an endless range of choices and possibilities. If the homeowner is happy everybody's else's opinion is of no consequences.
Depends on what will be easier as far as cuts goes, if the more difficult cut is on the ceiling, do that first so the wall tile covers it, otherwise do the walls first.
+Stevie Mcgreevy have not had to do that in quite some time. As long as you can secure the board properly by screwing into the studs, or strapping or whatever else the old board is secured to. it will be fine.
What is your advice for tiling over areas that have already been painted with emulsion? It looks like the ceiling has already been painted with something. Loving your videos btw
Sal, I am using 12 X 24 tile on the wall and would like to tile the ceiling over the shower area, 32 X 60. Using the thinset specifically for large format tiles I was thinking about also using it for the ceiling tiles, I have Hardie Backerboard on the ceiling, would that thinset be okay to use?
Hey sal. Do you think 12 x 24 in porcelain tile is too heavy for the ceiling ? as long as I have good coverage, and the ceiling is flat I should be okay?thanks
Mr.Sal, good video. I am an architect from India. I have few doubts. Can we paste 24x48 inch vitrified tile on the ceiling which weighs about 20kg each tile. How long this would stay, what is the possibility of it falling down. How long we should hold the tile to get it fixed with the ceiling. Is this advisable for large format tiles, please share us some technical specs on the adhesive also.
arth agam India probably has different specs than the USA so i would research what those are and install the tile accordingly, however the size of the tile i don't think is the issue, the weight per square inch for a tile of similar thicknesses will be the same no matter how big the tile is.
Because of cultural differences, you probably miss understood my reply, when I Said "I would do some research" It actually means that you should do the research. It is a saying that means if i were in your place. I do not have the time or means to do the research to find out what adhesives are available jn your country.
I have always installed tile on a ceiling with the same thinset I use to install the rest of the tile, if however you are nervous about it, try a non sag thinset.
Great video, Sal! I am considering using Litokol (Starlike) as both adhesive and grout, do you have any feedback using Litokol as adhesive vs. Thin-set? This is for a small shower (36x36) for tiles on the walls and ceiling above a shower unit. Thanks!
@@SalDiBlasi Do you think I will be ok using OmniGrip premix rather than mixing Thin-set. It's a small job, under 20sqft with 9sqft on the ceiling (36x36" shower). We're using 12x12 mosaic tile sheets. Thanks for your expertise, Sal!!
+fvfgx I never mix a whole bag at once because i like to use a 3 and a half gallon bucket, i find the 5 gallon buckets to be too deep for my liking. Add some water to the bucket, add the powder and mix until it is at the desired consistency, if it is a bit dry add a bit of water, and visa versa.
+Sal DiBlasi Pot life varies depending on type and brand of thinset, temperature and humidity. The directions on the bag should include what the pot life will be.
Mr. Diblasi, I can't quite tell from the video; but, it appears that some of the ceiling had been defaced of it's paint. Is it necessary to remove paint and texture prior to installing tile on a ceiling and/or a wall (not in a shower per se)?
Your videos are amazing Sal! I noticed in this video there is a half wall, what is the purpose of it? Will there be glass placed on top the the half wall to the roof? Also, will you post a video on how to make those walls? Thank you!
Thank you for the response, I am planning on doing something very similar. Is there a specific name for that glass, are they typically custom made? The big box stores don't seem to carry them in stock/on display.
Hey Sal I have a totally unrelated question, How do you keep safety glasses from steaming up while wearing a dust mask.. I always have this problem when doing the demo part of the job and using a grinder or sawzall. Lately I have given up and just wear the mask, while getting red and sore eyes
Hi Sal great videos! I was wondering if you could for those tiles did you use a 1/4" square notch trowel? Also if I wanted to install some 3"x9"s, 3/8" thick on 12"x12" sheets on shower walls and ceiling . Would a 1/4" trowel be sufficient?
For smaller tiles a 1/4" trowel will usually work just fine sometimes an even smaller trowel will work. As the tiles get larger, so does the notch of the trowel, so for those larger tiles probably a 3/8 or 1/2 inch trowel.
Sal DiBlasi standard procedure to not match the pattern to the ceiling?.... I'm not buying that one...that's taking a shortcut to get job done without making all those cuts...lol
Mr sal I was watching the video again but for some reason I never saw the end anyway why are you putting tape in the bullnose and the field tile when you put a all celling tile without any tape seems like you are lack of confidence doing celling tile
When putting the bullnose up I like to put some tape to keep it tight to the tile so the spacers don't fall out and they stay in place while working on the next piece.
+Robbery1211 That is a common misconception about wet saws, the blade has no teeth and is smooth covered in diamond dust, it will not cut flesh unless you really push hard against it. However it will cut through a fingernail without any trouble.
You can gauge the experience level of a tradesman by how he operates around dangerous power tools. If it doesnt look like he's seconds away from making himself into a fountain of blood, he's newbie.
Or..measure off your walls (which should be straight and square anyways) and snap lines..your boards are funny...backbuttering is key but so is flat troweling the surface.. so that you know that there are no "dry" spaces and like with any bond..both surfaces should have the adhesive for maximum hold and bond..that's just basic chemistry and science Sal..
I've always thought that a true professional passes on his knowledge to others. Sal is a true professional.

Can't say I have ever tried that, but what I do know is that you want as much thinset on the back of the tile as possible if you want it to stay up.
Can I use ready mix tile adhesive or should I use thin set morter mix?
I would stay away from mastic, stick with a good thinset mortar.

It is a saying that means if i were in your place. I do not have the time or means to do the research to find out what adhesives are available jn your country.
Hi i am willing to put marble on ceiling of my barrel vaults, please guide me what should i use to install it???
It is much heavier than tile.
I have always installed tile on a ceiling with the same thinset I use to install the rest of the tile, if however you are nervous about it, try a non sag thinset.
Does anyone know what color is this tile?
Great video, Sal! I am considering using Litokol (Starlike) as both adhesive and grout, do you have any feedback using Litokol as adhesive vs. Thin-set? This is for a small shower (36x36) for tiles on the walls and ceiling above a shower unit. Thanks!
Never used it.
@@SalDiBlasi thinset over durock (covered in redgard) should be fine for tile application, yes?
@@h1pst3r88 Redgard is designed to accept thinset.
@@h1pst3r88 I never use mastic these days, and when I did it was always in a dry area, best to just use a good quality thinset.
How do you keep the spacers from falling down?
Magic. 😊 if they get in the thinset they will stay up.
what kind of tape do you use?
+Munja Nashua Tape, but I usually just use painters tape.
can you do a video on how to mix a quarter or half a bag and how long of a work time do you have before it sets
Ok thanks, so I guess its like dry wall mud Ive never read the back I just mix it by sight and feel
Is there a reason why you did not continue the diagonal pattern on the ceiling to mach the walls?
yes, because that is what the customer wanted.
I think it actually looks better not placing diagonal on the ceiling. The pattern should be broken up when changing planes like that in my opinion.
Mr. Diblasi,
I can't quite tell from the video; but, it appears that some of the ceiling had been defaced of it's paint. Is it necessary to remove paint and texture prior to installing tile on a ceiling and/or a wall (not in a shower per se)?
+David DeMarsh No paint just the joint compound smoothed over to the backer board
+Sal DiBlasi thank you
Your videos are amazing Sal! I noticed in this video there is a half wall, what is the purpose of it? Will there be glass placed on top the the half wall to the roof? Also, will you post a video on how to make those walls? Thank you!
Yes the will be a glass enclosure, to give a feeling of being more open, I will put that on my list of videos to make.
Thank you for the response, I am planning on doing something very similar. Is there a specific name for that glass, are they typically custom made? The big box stores don't seem to carry them in stock/on display.
And seriously, you're an artist. Hopefully I've gleamed enough from your videos to do this right!
Yes the glass is a custom thing and it is quite expensive.
What is the tape for at 11:23?
So not safe? Not trying to die by shower. Sounds like it needs to be taken down and redo with thin set method.
If he is using liquid nails to install tile on a ceiling, who knows what else he may have screwed up. No not safe.
Hey Sal I have a totally unrelated question, How do you keep safety glasses from steaming up while wearing a dust mask.. I always have this problem when doing the demo part of the job and using a grinder or sawzall. Lately I have given up and just wear the mask, while getting red and sore eyes
Use one with a valve. www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dtools&field-keywords=dust+mask+with+valve
Let me know when yu figure it out 😊
breath out the bottom of the mask by over hanging your top lip just a little and move glasses a half inch down your nose.
How do you prevent the tiles to fall down?
Use the correct thinset and technique, usually not a problem.
comgratulations good job
Muy buen trabajo!!!!
Un saludo desde España.
Nice video
where do you get those snips that you cut the circle with?
+Andrew Mclovich You can find all kinds here www.contractorsdirect.com/search?keywords=nippers&order=relevance:asc
+Sal DiBlasi thanks sal that site is amazing
Thanks for the videos, here's a tip!
You ever use a laser square before?
Yes, and yes, i use both when I need them.
@@SalDiBlasi So what would be considered Small and large? Are my 12"x12" sheets of 3"x9" tiles considered small?

Im a helper and i can do most of this.
Понравилось, прям как в СССР )))
what happens when tiles get loose because of bad fitting or any other reason in future
they might go thro. some bodies head.
when I put them up they stay there
Can you do 18 X 18 porcelain tiles on ceiling?
+SATXDONKEY Yes you can.
At 10:42 minutes, is that HVAC aluminum tape? Better than duct tape.
Yes works very well
I'm wondering why the ceiling pattern does not match the wall.... you went through all that it didn't match it up....why?
standard procedure.
Sal DiBlasi standard procedure to not match the pattern to the ceiling?.... I'm not buying that one...that's taking a shortcut to get job done without making all those cuts...lol
Every time you see a shower, look at the ceiling,
You installed tils on the ceiling over the joint compound? He he dont be surprise if the tile will drop down on sombodys head some day
If it were joint compound you might have a point, but since it is plaster, it will be just fine.

Reminds me of the time I went to a low income dentist to get my wisdom teeth removed.
I just want to pray for your safety while operating that saw. Your hands where really close
+Robbery1211 That is a common misconception about wet saws, the blade has no teeth and is smooth covered in diamond dust, it will not cut flesh unless you really push hard against it. However it will cut through a fingernail without any trouble.
@@SalDiBlasi wow - good to know!
You can gauge the experience level of a tradesman by how he operates around dangerous power tools. If it doesnt look like he's seconds away from making himself into a fountain of blood, he's newbie.
boy thats the truth sal
newbie for life
It's extremely difficult to cut yourself with a power tile saw. You can touch the blade with your bare hand and it won't hurt you.
@@jimvani I still grimaced watching him cut that tile however.
my luck they would fall and knock my butt out lol
Or..measure off your walls (which should be straight and square anyways) and snap lines..your boards are funny...backbuttering is key but so is flat troweling the surface.. so that you know that there are no "dry" spaces and like with any bond..both surfaces should have the adhesive for maximum hold and bond..that's just basic chemistry and science Sal..
Cristian Anthis Working upside down is uncomfortable, and more difficult than any other surface. I will do anything that will make it easier.

+Munja Kind of.
