- As we approach Yom HaShoah, the day in the Jewish calendar when we remember the victims of the Holocaust, we tragically continue to see levels of antisemitism and antisemitic attacks rising in countries all over the world.
Over the past year or so, working with White Animation, I have produced a mini-series of three short animated videos which seek to explain several aspects of the worrying and dangerous return of antisemitism.
The first video looks at why antisemitism is a virus, how it has mutated over time and why its return today presents a danger not just for Jews, but for all who care about our common humanity.
The second video explains what lies beneath the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign, why it is so dangerous, and why Jews, people of all faiths and of none and all those who value a free society must stand up against it.
This video explores the connection between Jews as a people, Judaism as a religion, and Israel as a state. It also shows how this connection is intrinsic to the link between antisemitism and anti-Zionism; something too often overlooked or misunderstood.

I read some of the remarks below and understand that many people don't know exactly what is Judaism and what is Zionism.
(The partial truth may and had lead to big mistakes...)
As a religious Jew who is also a zionist and live in Israel...I understand these concepts better- since they are an essential part of my life .
The concepts of judaism and zionism partially overlap but not totally:
Judaism is strongly related to a specific country- Israel ,and to Jerusalem. You can see this by reading the Torah and first books of prophets.
Zionism started as a secular movement that took only the national aspects of the Jewish religion: land of Israel and Jerusalem and the nation. The purposes of Zionism are secular: finding a safe place for the Jewish nation in our ancient homeland. (Judaism is a religion AND a nation as well, as written in the scriptures. However we lost the national aspect for 2000 years of living outside of Israel).
Many religious Jews were FOR zionism ,since the return to Israel is a religious goal as well, but also many of them were AGAINST it ,since it led many Jews to become secular.
So anti- Judaism (" anti semitism") is not exactly anti-zionism but there is a LARGE OVERLAP:
Judaism and Zionism do share the love for the land of Israel, Jerusalem and the goal to live there as a nation ,but Zionism has a secular goal only ,while Judaism connects living in Israel with obeying Torah laws.
That's why you can find ultra- orthodox jews who oppose Israel- but they are few in number+ they oppose the state just because it is secular.
The problem with anti- zionism is NOT that Israeli-Jews must not be criticized. They should be- if they (we...) do something wrong. The problem is that the criticism is full of lies -about the Israeli- palestinian conflict and suggesting the Jews should not live in Israel as their independent state.
To sum up: you can (and sometimes should) have criticism on Israel but please check you have your facts correct.
Additionally: there is a good way to criticize ("you are doing something wrong...here what you can do to change") and there is a bad ,anti semetic way ("the Israelis/ jews are evil..." etc).
You are wrong to believe that the State of Israel is at all the same as the Nation of Israel described in the Torah. The nation of Israel described names all those people who have descended from the spiritual teachings included in the old texts. The modern State is a political creation, that has chosen to use the same name to mislead millions of gullible Christians & Jews, and the government of the United States into financially supporting the settler colonial settlements to steal the homes of indigenous people, and incite wars around the world to sell Israeli weapons.
I know many Jewish people who are good and honorable here in the United States, who do not support the Apartheid state of Israel, because it sets a horrible example for respecting the ideals of Human Rights that the whole world should aspire to. JewishVoiceForPeace.org
It is more moral to point our criticism towards ourselves and the activities that we participate in, and asking how we can improve the consequences of our actions, than it is to deflect the criticism that we hear!

To be constructive with my criticism, what you could do to improve the reputation of your nation:
Only support politicians who do not support legal Apartheid (2 systems, with different rights for white Jews compared to other people), and who denounce the IDF murders of Palestinian civilians, propose sincerely an intent to address the dignity of these people for the long term, including immediately providing Gaza with electric power 24 hours every day, halting construction of new settlements on any land which is already used for residence or farming by any person, and allow for the freedom of movement without checkpoints of all Palestinians.
Those are the bare minimum essentials to halt the continuing slide of the State of Israel into Fascism.

@@merbst Since its inception in July 2005, the BDS movement has sought to promote boycotts, divestment and sanctions against the State of Israel with the objective of delegitimizing its existence as a Jewish state. A significant part of the BDS movement’s strategy is the transformation of Israel into an international pariah nation by means of its portrayal as an apartheid state deliberately and institutionally discriminating against its Arab citizens.
Perversely, one of the bodies contributing to this propaganda is actually an Israeli organization, ‘Adalah - the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel’. Adalah is persistent in claiming that the State of Israel promotes a discriminatory policy against its Arab citizens.
This report surveys in detail the list of laws published on the Adalah website as discriminatory, and examines the validity of the organization’s claims regarding the existence of discrimination against Israeli Arab citizens. The report’s findings reveal that Adalah elects to adopt a strategy of distorting reality with deliberately biased presentations in order to defame Israel as guilty of enforcing dozens of discriminatory laws.
The findings of this report, presented in detail in the summary chapter, clearly demonstrate that for a variety of reasons, the claims promoted by Adalah are, in essence, fundamentally groundless:
1. The overwhelming majority of the laws featured in the list (53 out of 57) do not even relate to the citizens’ ethnic origins and those that do, are designed to prevent and avoid discrimination. For example, the Law and Administration Ordinance (1948) that defines the country’s official rest days, and the Law for Using the Hebrew Date, both explicitly exclude institutions and authorities that serve non-Jewish populations for whom the law provides for definitions and procedures appropriate for their specific needs.
2. In 21 cases, Adalah’s claims of discrimination stem from the organization’s extremist stance that rejects the nature of Israel as a nation state in general and as the nation state of of the Jewish people in particular. For example, the Yad BenZvi Law is defined as a discriminatory law because of the institution’s objective of promoting Zionist ideals.
3. 18 of the laws reflect customs in other Western democracies whose democratic character no one would disparage. For example, according to Adalah, the flag constitutes a discriminatory law. Needless to say, this unfounded reasoning would mean that any country, the flag of which bears a cross or crescent discriminates against its non-Christian or non-Muslim minorities. A more in-depth comparison between the laws frequently found that Israeli legislation is actually characterized by a higher degree of tolerance for its national minorities.
4. In at least 13 cases, a large disparity exists between the explicit content of the laws and the biased (and sometimes warped) interpretation accorded to them by Adalah. In some instances the claimed discrimination is difficult to identify. For example, the Golan Heights Law is considered discriminatory due to its objective of “according a legal basis for the implementation of Israeli law on the territory of the Golan Heights conquered by Israel”. It would seem that only Adalah is capable of explaining a law intended to grant equal rights to all residents of the Golan Heights as being discriminatory.
5. 8 laws are intended to protect the security of all Israeli citizens regardless of religion, race or gender. Included in these laws are a number of legislative amendments to the Criminal Procedure Law and the Prisons Ordinance aimed at assisting the security forces in preventing terror attacks. These laws adversely affect only those clearly suspected of engaging in terror activity without distinguishing between Jews and Arabs. In effect, this very claim is woefully discriminatory because it presumes that Arab citizens of Israel are generally hostile and prone to terror activities.
6. 7 of the laws do not even relate to Israel’s Arab citizens but rather to those noncitizen individuals towards whom the State is not obligated to act with equality. The absurdity in Adalah’s approach can be demonstrated by the example of the Trading with the Enemy Act (a law evolving from British Mandatory law) being included in the list of discriminatory laws because “the countries declared as such (Iran, Syria and Lebanon) are Arab and/or Muslim states”. Presumably the law could be remedied by adding other, non-Muslim and non-Arab enemy states.
7. In the case of some of the laws mentioned in the list, the supposed discrimination in question actually affected the Jewish majority and not the Arab minority. For example, Clause 7a of the Basic Law: the Knesset, the objective of which is to prevent the candidacy of political parties acting against the existence of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, has been implemented only against Jewish parties on grounds of anti-democratic objectives. Similarly, amendments to the Absorption of Discharged Soldiers Law are indicted by Adalah for discriminating in favor of Jewish citizens, but these citizens are the ones specifically obligated to serve three years of military service for sub-minimum compensation and living conditions, thus postponing their university education and professional advancement. It is the Arab citizen who enjoys the option of exemption from military service altogether or alternatively, of volunteering for national civil service which does not place them in harms way but which nevertheless affords them the same benefits awarded to discharged soldiers.
8. In a number of cases, Adalah misuses objective crime statistics to claim discrimination. According to this logic, if members of the Arab sector of the population are the main criminal violators of a certain law, then that particular law perforce is deemed racist. This could apply to laws against theft of property, against sex crimes or against driving through red lights. The constructive and proper solution, to disproportionate violations is not annulment of necessary laws, of course, but rather, educating and encouraging observance of the law among all sectors of the population-without distinction or favoritism.
Fundamentally, an in-depth examination of the so-called “discriminatory” laws listed by Adalah demonstrates that the laws promoting Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people do not discriminate against its Arab citizens or diminish their civil rights. Rather, they assist in promoting Israel as a more Jewish and a more democratic state striving for the welfare of all its citizens. Any reasonable and fair comparison of Israel’s laws with those of the overwhelming number of other democratic states constituting nation states of majority ethnic groups would conclude that Israel is a model for promoting the democratic rights of all of its citizens.

Really question here, not trying to start controversy, why are there Jews who oppose Zionism. Many of my Jewish friends believe Israel is a fascist state and believe they have no right to push out the Palestinians. Is there in particular reason for this system of beliefs and if your Jewish are you familiar with other Jews who believe this and do you yourself feel the same?

I pick this year because it is just before the creation of the zionist movement then jump on to the 1920s the region changed significantly due the the collapse of the ottoman empire and this became the starting point of new countries popping up prior to this there wer no countries of Saudi, Jordan, Lebanon, UAE, Kuwait, Iraq, Palestine etc it is only after the 1920s that these areas started to become bordered, this whole region was populated by many and varied religions and ethnicities. Lines were drawn an a map by the the French and the British and hey presto here is a new country regardless of the ethnicities of the people or the fact that large numbers happened to be nomadic. The French and the British needed to do this to prevent another large caliphate starting up again after the fall of the last. This really annoyed the imams and in particular the Saudi wahabis as they believed that the British were going to give them control of the whole region. I am saying this because at no point in time from 1860 until 1965-8 did any Arab see or recognise Palestinians as being Palestinians, they were Arabs. The same way they regarded Egypt etc as Arab a they didn't want large numbers of Jews coming into their area. Well that is with the exception of the Landlords who sold land at inflated prices to the Jews, land which they regarded as useless. I find it curious that when before large numbers of Jews started to go to Palestinian it had a pretty small population with very little arable land which bar Jerusalem no really valued. To a place where the Jews turned the land around re-establish agriculture creating jobs in an area that had been in decline for centuries, then all of a sudden Arabs wanted it back!! I would suggest that the people in the 1920s who really saw themselves as Palestinians were the Jews because no other Arabs recognised them as ethnic Palestinians. Now you say Israel holds Palestinians in a concentration camp! I presume that you mean Gaza, I would ask you who created it or bares responsibility for that? The Arabs never accepted Israel and the "Palestinians" have been paying a penalty for that. As for the Golan heights, for twenty years the Syrians harassed Israel from the heights firing at villages, farmers and towns. If you have ever been to Israel you would understand why it will never return the Golan heights to Syria. Finally as I am getting board, firing at peaceful unarmed civilians. People charging at a border fence with burning tires, throwing petrol bombs and shouting death to Jews is not a peaceful demonstration. I actually am amazed by the restraint of the Israeli soldiers
Anti-Semitism is not anti-Zionism. Therefore, let's keep our definitions well defined, Semitic means children of Shem, son of Noah, and because Jews are an ethnic-based religion, its synonymous with anti-Jews as its used, but Arabs are Semitic to so it's not accurate. In short, Judaism is a religion, and wanting a piece of land is a political movement. So, being anti-Jewish is not the same as being an anti-zionist.
With all due respect, Islam abrogates Judaism, and Jews who invaded Palestinian lands are by a majority, not Semitic Jews, are non-religious and non-Hebrew speakers, so no wonder they have an identity crisis. Even, Netanyahu is of mainly Balkan R1b1 genes and there is no majority ethnic Jews in Palestine, and people are finding this out from personal DNA tests, and ironically its a religion based on ethnicity. That's why, DNA testing ancient cemeteries by archeologists, is conveniently prohibited by the Israeli state that is occupying Palestinian lands. To not mention palestinians and the reason of the criticism of Israel is really intellectually dishonest.
Zionism is a political ideology (uses a religious script as a tool although it's not a religious group itself)
Anyone can disagrees or opposes a political ideology for the reasons he sees right and this doesn't mean that he hates a whole nation or religion or culture or race.
Example: I oppose Nazi ideology but I still love germany and german people, and I wished the Nazi state to be fallen but not Germany to be destroyed.
Another example: I oppose islamic fundamentalism but I don't hate muslims, I just don't accept that they uses a religious script from the 7th century as an alternative to constitution and modern laws.
So trying to mix antizionism with racism against jews is a failed trial to say that zionism represents jews and Judaism, a very miserable logic you were using full of logical fallacies. In terms of numerical arguments, it's also rather dross. States based upon a religious or ethnic basis are being correctly moved on from in the modern age. Is it alright to recruit young jews and lure them into moving to Israel? Especially if they are living in a non-racist country with all opportunities they could wish for while Israel as a country is rather small in size an relies on exploiting resources of others to provide for it's citizens. Not to mention the illegal settlements. If many Israeli citizens are considering living in a Westbank settlement nearby to avoid high real estate prices on Israeli soil - why still the active recruiting of potential jewish immigrants if they live in a great environment somewhere else? I guess we all know the social and political reasons for this common practice.
