The Nissan Rogue ad that played before this made me realize just how great these bricks were. I still lament my 88 740 turbo (RIP 2005) and 89 760 turbo (RIP 2016)
It's wild to look back on the gradual change of vehicles over the last few decades, and to reflect on how much has changed. There are virtually no RWD passenger vehicles left in the mainstream market, except for enthusiast-oriented cars. The minivan has faded in popularity, the SUV rose to prominence for a while, and now the crossover vehicle is the king of the market. It's also interesting how spacious inside this Volvo 740 feels for passengers, and yet, it tips the scales at just under 3,000 lbs. Due to changes in safety, emissions, and demands for technology, it's no surprise that the equivalent of a Volvo 740 wagon today weighs about 3800 lbs.
i absolutelly love swedish bricks. ecspecially the 740. my swedisg grandpa drove it into the woods with me together when i was young and my dream is it to do the same with my kids too!
You can consider yourself a very lucky person to own this beautiful and iconic Volvo station wagon. Personally, I really like the dual headlights on this car, which unfortunately were not available here in Europe. Greetings from the owner of a Volvo (V70 TDI 1st series) from Klagenfurt - Austria. And yes, I have subscribed and will be following your channel.
The combination of being a turbo, a wagon, and having a manual transmission is already pretty spectacular (the manuals were somewhat rare here in the USA). Add in the fact that the body is undamaged, rust-free, and it came with the elusive checkered sport seats, and this car is an absolute unicorn!
Hey! The American style double headlights are available as an aftermarket part in Europe too. In Sweden they are sold as "USA-front" and I think they are available from a couple of online stores that sell car parts. This seems to be a pretty popular modification, and I agree, they look really cool. They are not cheap, but there you go...
Great video! I own an Automatic 87 740 N/A Sedan which is my current project and is nearly done, almost 6 years after buying the car. I hope to see more content from you on your new used turbo wagon!
Cheers from Sweden, your 25th subscriber here. I share your interesst in Volvo, I have 3 myself. A C70 T5 1997, S60 T5 2005 and a V60 D2 2013 (my daily driver). 👍
Hi from UK, I had a non turbo, auto 740 wagon back in the late eighties, same colour as this, same wheels, sold it at 247K miles, it still ran well but was getting thirsty. Is that a Laycock Overdrive, I had one fitted in a 240GLT in early eighties, and I think that the overdrive worked on 3rd and 4th, next one I had was a five speed box. I now have 2007 V70 R AWD wagon, 6 speed auto, only done 86K but have had a few problems with ECT needing a rewrite, some replacement suspension parts, and thermostat problems which blew out the rad! All good at present.Looking forward to seeing this 740 project proceed, have just subbed.
Hi there, yes this should be a Laycock Overdrive, from what I have read. I have not ever tried using it in 3rd gear, only 4th gear so far. I love the color combo because it’s more interesting than white, but still the interior should do well in the hot summer months. I will post more videos as I have updates!
On my m46 transmission I just hit the overdrive button in 4th and it goes right in without the use of the clutch, although when downshifting out of OD I use the clutch. Is this incorrect? Been working fine for me
Per the owners manual: “Depress the clutch fully when shifting gears, and when engaging/disengaging overdrive (5th gear). The overdrive can be engaged in 4th gear only. The overdrive is engaged/disengaged by depressing the switch on top of the gear shift lever. The overdrive is automatically disengaged when downshifting from fourth gear, but you should always disengage the overdrive manually before downshifting.”
I think I see your not running problem. near the battery there is a block of 4 resistors that run the voltage to the fuel injectors. I thought I saw a wire not right on the resistor regulator block. I had this same problem on my 89 740 many years ago. Your Coil wire is not plugged in as well.

Amazing find, the paint colour looks very similar to the beige gold metallic on my 1983 360!
Looks like your coil is unplugged. Good luck with the project, I’m working on my dads 87 turbo sedan right now - they are awesome cars
