I recognize the painting in the thumbnail. It's from an old Irish ballad about a princess and the knight who were in love. Her father the king disapproved of the relationship and ordered the knight to be put to death. The painting is of the two lovers meeting for the last time. I am an artist and when I saw this painting I knew I had to paint it. I think it's my favorite painting.

There are several YT channels that give adequate descriptions and informations about life in the medieval times, but sadly, Medieval Madness is not one of them.
I think game of thrones show did an excellent job pulverizing the romanticized ideals of medieval courtship & pageantry the galant knight, fair ladies, princess and even queens.
It cost quite a bit to enter a convent. Most women were from wealthy families and many, probably most had no choice. It was a way to either get rid of daughters who couldn’t be married off for various reasons (too many daughters or in debt and couldn’t afford a dowry/bad reputation/too intelligent/not pretty enough/ or to have someone to pray for a parent’s soul, often a living parent). While there were parents who loved their daughters, many were not valued. There are examples of daughters who had a vocation but were married off anyway. It was not a good time to be female. Extra sons were also forced to take orders. Not surprising these folks failed to follow the rules. Not to mention that in some cases the rules themselves were so strict most humans couldn’t follow them anyway.

A good predictor of how you were labeled depended on how many counties you controlled. As far as modern dukes and such I’m not sure, I know historically that it was the case that they’d have power of counties within their domain.
Imagine a baron as being like a mayor incharhe of a town the count incharge of a county the Duke like a governor incharge of a region/state/province the king incharge of a country and emporer leads an empire of countries
9.33 - I'm a bit confused. That picture is of the medieval fortress of Tervuren, which was once used as a hunting lodge by the Dukes of Brabant. There are only a few remnants of walls and cellars to be seen (oldest bits from around 1200 according to the heritage site). It was constantly modified and extended over the centuries, but ultimately got destroyed. Do you happen to have a source for the building work Margaret has done? I can't find much about it, but it sounds interesting. Margaret's husband, Duke Jan II, died in the castle in 1312, maybe of because of kidney stones. Actually, the engraving at 4.28 is a theoretical portrait of Jan. Thx

I have a theory that the materials were too expensive so you couldn't practice with the medium, you had to practice in the dirt with a stick or something. Idk if that is true tho, maybe they had a cheap way, maybe they just thought it was funny to make everyone look bad.
I read some time ago, that they didn’t believe in doing the likeness of the person for religious reasons or superstitions. I don’t remember well now, I should look that up again. I do remember it was quite interesting.
The same thing will be said about our artwork in a couple of years. They weren't bad at drawing. There are hundred of masterpieces, it just a lot of people didn't care for realism. That was considered boring. Art is more than that, anyways.

And in the UK, we have earls instead of counts. But the wives of earls are countesses in line with their European counterparts.
