    In this video:
    The genesis of Sriracha hot sauce (pronounced sir-ah-cha, contrary to what many think) becoming the condiment staple it is today can be traced back to 1975 and an unassuming Vietnamese refuge called David Tran- the founder and current CEO of Huy Fong Foods.

      You don't give the total early story of Sriracha, from Sriracha Thailand, where Fong got the early recipe...... Sriracha never trademarked the name , they should have done like Champaign in France, that way you could not call it Sriracha sauce unless it came from Sriracha, Thailand. And it is pronounced Sri-racha (Sree-racha) not Sir-acha (Sur-acha) IMO The best Sriracha sauce comes from Sriracha Thailand. (It's the Peppers)

    My dad knew the guy who started 505 chile sauce. Sadly he sold his company to someone in California. I'm glad Tran is doing everything possible to keep the quality of his product in his hands.
    Pro tip: if you've finished your bottle of Sriracha, don't throw it out just yet. Put some soy sauce into the bottle and give it a shake. Now you have a spicy soy sauce that you can use to flavor fried rice or used as a marinade.

    When I first heard of Sriracha, I thought to myself "why would anyone want a sauce where the only redeeming quality was heat?". I was a fool. Sriracha is delicious through and through, the heat is an added bonus. Seriously, no recipe I have ever made featuring this sauce has ever turned out poorly. It's great for any application where any hot sauce will do, adds kick to dishes otherwise lacking, and when combined with melted cheese is fantastic for dipping (or slathering atop a grilled mushroom for a heartier meal). Sriracha may be a generic name anyone can use, but Huy Fong truly makes the best stuff and I never buy anything else anymore. If it's a cheaper copy it's cheaper for a reason, and if it's more expensive it's just trying to ride off the famous name and trick people into thinking more money = more better.
    The original is the best, and I love it so much. Thank you Tran!

He let the customers speak, not the marketing people. All of his steps only look weird when compared to the constant noise of marketing people. +Slyme -- That's where you're wrong. Look up some of the stories of people who set industry standards. Everyone who tries to steal market share with a knock-off winds up leading people back to the industry leader. Since its a better sauce at lower price, all the knock-offs are doing is growing the market and fighting over Huy Fong's scraps. When the Sriracha craze dies down and the market shrinks, Huy Fong isn't going to suddenly have tons of product it can't sell slowly going bad in a warehouse like everybody else.
      Playing the long game almost always works out better than chasing short-term profits.
      Heck, I just looked in _my_ fridge and found a bottle of Huy Fong Sriracha sauce. I've been buying it for years without even knowing what brand it was. His strategy is working.

    I remember sitting down in a little bar/ restaurant in Korea, where I was stationed back in 2003. I ordered a bowl of beef ramen. There on the table I saw a mysterious bottle of a red paste with a red roster on it. I tried it in my ramen and was instantly hooked and still use it on almost everything.

      Jim Redtalon ... hey thats about the same time i started using it! we had a new roommate in our house and the house rules were everyone gets a shelf in the fridge to themselves, but anything put on the door shelves was considered public domain....and the new guy put this weird bottle of sauce with a rooster on it in the door fridge...we tried it and i swiped it and put it on my shelf lol....then a misunderstanding ensued...once we explained it to him a second time he was like ohhhhh ok...so i gave it back and ran out immediately and bought my own....been using ever since on just about everything......especially good on eggs

      Thousands of small businesses follow his approach. It's just uncommon for said people to be able to grow their businesses further than a 1-5 person operation, as people usually don't care enough about locally produced products to pay more for them. The food industry is one of the only manufacturing industries that the price difference between local and imported goods is small enough that said local manufacturers can survive.

    • @ArchaeanDragon
      @ArchaeanDragon 6 років тому +9

      Yeah, it's a shame, but it doesn't have to be.
      You know how to make more businessmen adopt Tran's approach to business? Don't buy from the ones who don't, and exclusively (while loudly proclaiming to everyone) buy from ones who do. Don't be shy and tell the ones who don't at every turn why you won't buy their products. It doesn't take a boycott, as all businesses with any marketing savvy realize that the last thing they need is people out there telling their friends and neighbors NOT to buy their product, and will feel the pressure as more and more people follow suit.
      In the end, you vote for the business environment you want with your wallet.

    I remember when I was in college and constantly broke that Sriracha sauce was available at the local canned foods warehouse. It was a place poor people could stretch their budgets buying canned food that was either recently expired or dented, sometimes even both. It was extremely inexpensive at less than a dollar for a huge bottle because people had no idea what it was or how great the stuff really is. Twenty-five years later it's extremely popular and found everywhere from prepackaged salty snacks to gourmet kitchens and fast food restaurants. Impressive story!

      The american original. Its similar how italians invented pizza with no pepperoni but pepperoni is the classic style pizza, because it was the first style that became popular, that people knew, and its our standard, our golden rule of how pizzas taste. And its not only the US. In all latin america there is asian food and the Sriracha sauce tends to be served alongside. We dont have a lot of Thai immigrants or Thai food (like in the US, the sriracha has become some asian fusion basic ingredient served with chinese food, etc), so to us, Sriracha is the standard for such sauces.

    He and his Dad lived as civilians among the Vietnamese and adopted some of their tastes. one of which was Sriracha chili sauce in elaborate glass bottles. It was not the same as the sauce we are now so familiar with. This was as sweet as it was hot, they had returned with several cases they told me,as shipping their belongings from Vietnam, cost them next to nothing. I liked it very much but have never located it since.

    I once heard someone say that there is no better advertising campaign than a reputation for excellence. Just look at the British Car manufacturer Rolls Royce. Since 1904 they have been making among the worlds best motor cars and aircraft engines and are so famous as a result that their name is practically synonymous with quality and when was the last time they actually had to advertise.

    Well yeah it would be weird to trademark the name "sriracha" seeing as how the sauce itself is from the town of Si Racha Thailand. The rooster sauce as we know it is better suited for western palettes and compared to other variations it relies on heat more, and some would argue feels less balanced. I'm not knocking the sauce though, I'm a fan and always keep a bottle at the house.

      thailand should appreciate him naming it like that, his sauce surely is a little difference from the thai's version. he could name it anything he wanted, but he didn't. rooster was year he was born, huy feng name of ship that rescued him, sriracha the partial influence.

    • @odaily
      @odaily 6 років тому +2

      I should have mentioned it separately, I meant Tran's Siracha is his own recipe and nothing like Original Sriracha. That's my point. He could name it differently, just like Tapatio hot sauce. btw It was his choice. I came across lots of millennial and they thought Tran's Rooster Sriracha is the Original. I kinda know facts don't matter these day people just go by what they like.

    As a Thai, it seems to me pretty obvious you don't trademark "Sri Racha" sauce. Sri Racha isn't a brand name. It's a type of hot sauce. For example, in Thailand we have several brands of Sri Racha sauce, such as Sri Racha Panich (the most popular), and even Heinz sells Sri Racha sauce here. "Huy Fung" is the brand and makes sense that it's trademarked.
    To me, trademarking "Sri Racha" would make as much sense as trademarking "Tomato Ketchup".
    But I guess if I wasn't Thai the word "Sri Racha" would sound exotic enough to be a unique brand name.

    • @bluesira

    Wow. What a top tier, grade-A person! I'm sure we could all be better if we had his mindset. I was introduced to Sriracha about a decade ago, and since then, I have never been without a bottle of it in the fridge. It's the perfect amount of spice and flavor for just about anything, from eggs, to burritos, steak, chicken, or just plain old white rice. It's as versatile as salt, in my opinion!
    I'd love to meet the man himself, shake his hand, thank him, and hear stories of his youth. He is truly an inspiration.
